Yamauchi – GT5 will set “new industry standard” for racing

granturismo5

GT5 will set a new tide-mark for racing games, Polyphony Digital legend Kazunori Yamauchi has told the US PS Blog, provided the team creates the game it initially intended.

“We always set very high goals and ideal for our games,” said the developer, talking at E3. “The [E3] GT5 trailer that you saw is a very small portion of what we’re working on.

“As long as we actually achieve our goals and fulfil our expectations I’m sure it would set the new industry standard.”

The game was revealed at E3 this year with a knockout trailer of GT’s trademark models rallying, road-racing and, um, Nascaring.

The very short interview can be seen below.

New industry standard or not, it’s still driving a car around a sterile, featureless loop. Compared to the dynamic, gorgeous GRID, Gran Turismo just looks foolish.

Whenever I play GRID round my mates house I keep thinking I have to go to the eye doctor to have them checked out. Then I remember that the dev made the graphics hazy and blurry to try and disguise how average they are. Good fun though, but I’ll take GT5 over GRID every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Remember that GT5 will be very different from GT5P.

Please dont make the rallying crap Polyphony. I’m depending on them to make up for what codies are doing to the genre.

Indeed. That’s Forza 2, the famous PC racing sim.

…and of course, there’s no such thing as cockpits on console racers, which is why you’ll never see something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVzhkASVCQ0#t=8m22s

@blackdreamhunk

So your justification that PC racing sims are better than console ones is two links to the vehicle customisation screens of a *console* game and then videos of expensive chairs that could just as easily be designed for a console (including the multiple screens which Forza supports).

It strikes me that what’s missing from your arguments are the games. It’s no good having an expensive steering wheel and a high-end PC if you can’t find one good game to talk about.

I think GT is and always has been definitive with the way in which it is closely and actively related to the automotive industry.

Maybe it’s not the definitive experience in terms of the simulation, but it’s an institution. And horn tooting at E3, (clearly when this video was) that either GT or Forza are the definitive games, is worthless. Becuase that’s the gaming crowd.

It’s the racing crowd that matters.

“It’s the racing crowd that matters.”

Not in terms of sales they don’t. Which is why hardcore PC racing sims sell in the 10s of thousands vs Gran Turismo which sells in the multi millions.

That’s the point…. It IS the racign crowd that matters.

Getting their attention.

I’m not sure I follow. If the racing crowd are important, why do the hardcore racing games sell so little? You’re after the gamers / casuals if you want ludicrous sales… and that’s always been the key to GT’s success.

Racing fans are gaming casuals.

Casual gamers (or non-gamers) who like racing pick up Gran Turismo, becuase they hear about it when watching something racing related.

That’s how I saw it.

The perception outside of the gamers is whats important for lots of sales.

Why does Gears of War sell? Becuase it’s advertised everywhere, otuside of gamign sites, including TV and other sites.

At least thats what I reckoned.

I see. I thought you were talking about the racing crowd as in the rFactor, iRacing etc players.

New standard for boredom. Give me Burnout or NFS or even Gotham…. Gran Turismo has always been about boredom.. err realism.

Lets see…GT1, GT2, GT3, GT4, GT5P all set new standards for console racing. I see a trend. No reason to think the full GT5 won’t do the same. I love racing games, and have quite a collection of games and racing interfaces for ALL the systems. I can surely say that despite GT5P’s meager content, it ran away (no pun intended) with the easy victory. Nothing (even on my PC) “FEELS” like i’m driving more that than Polyphony Digital’s masterful programming. It’s the racing that counts NOT the crashing. I’ll be in line picking up my copy on day one (same for the PSP version).

As far as visuals go…GRID is very tiring on my eyes…way too blurrry!! Control is a mess too. Nothing realistic about it, but still fun!!
