Bleszinski: “The future of shooters is RPGs”

Cliff Bleszinski has told Develop that the RPG genre will eventually mash in with shooters.
“I had a conversation with Harvey Smith – one of the lead designers on Deus Ex – and said to him the future of shooters is RPGs,” he told the site. “He said he completely agreed. There was a time when the industry warmed down, and then BioShock came along.”
As far as the Gears franchise including RPG elements in the future was concerned, as usual, Bleszinski was cryptic.
“It depends on where things go. I mean, one could wean that from the comments I made earlier about the future of shooters is RPGs and see where things are going with us.”
The full interview is through the link.

Dunno about future, but so far most of them have been pretty special
System Shock 2, Bloodlines, Deus Ex and Invisible War are all great games.

I think he was talking Rocket Propelled Grenades … bigger, better and MORE BAD ASS!
Seriously the past and present of shooters is RPGs too. At least elements of. It’s been here a while CliffyB where have you been?

Not surprised. It’s not hard to pencil in some RPG elements in Gears of War.

That picture just screams “I’m a tool.”

I think they’ve had a bit of a shake-up considering the failure of UT3.

@scratchy69
He also has a T-Short with “Yes it is me!” written on it. He often pictures “tool”. Still they make fine games, so who’s to complain.

Can’t say about PS3, but the 360 version sunk without a trace and the PC version didn’t do so well, despite it’s mini come back when they gave it away basically. I think for most games it might have done OK, but for a high end Epic shooter, it’s done pretty badly for them. Before the steam sale, the online on the PC was basically dead, less than 15 servers at one point.

Oh right.
I thought the PC version did better than that.
I think that I can remember Mark Rein talking up how well it was selling on PS3 at one point too, but that was way back when the install base wasn’t doing too well anyway, so the sales can’t have been that good.

I’ve been a long time UT fan, bought them all as soon as they came out, and UT3 is by far the worst of the lot. The focus shift to vehicles and gimmicks has ruined the series.

Yeah, I bought it for the 360 and thought that I would have played it a lot more, but didn’t.
Actually, I still intend to go through the SP ‘campaign’ at some point… I sometimes just give it a quick 5-10 minute game online though. It’s OK, just a bit old school IYAM.

The single players is an absolute abortion. For the 360 chaps like yourself it’s just a waste of disc space with all the HD FMV’s chucked into it where they could have dumped that was of time and kept all the base maps etc.

I would welcome more Deus Ex – system shock 2 like games, I wish there were more right now.

God cliff is a D-Bag someone needs to knock him off his high horse seriously. Next year hes gonna make an RPG Shooter then say he revolutionized the industry with his new game just like he did with Gear of Wars! P.S. others games had a cover system before Gears of War or were in development before Gears of War!

Taylis, in the full interview he actually corrects the interviewer for saying Gears “was the originator of the cover-based shooter”, pointing out that WinBack was.

Cliff reminds me of the comedy sidekicks you get in action films.
