Following news yesterday that Microsoft was planning in the incorporate ads into Xbox Live in the coming year, Major Nelson’s gone on the record to say the introduction won’t get in your way. Phew.
“I need to let you know that you don’t need to worry about a huge influx of ads across the dashboard,” the exec said.
“One of our core principles is to enhance, not interfere with the gaming experience, and we work directly with our partners to only deliver experiences that are relevant to the Live community.”
Apparently the ads are going to be an “organic” part of the dashboard.

It was bound to happen. It’s when it starts in game, it’ll be pisser. But saying that, I know Burnout uses ad’s but it’s too fast to really matter. I think there was one Lynx (Axe) ad in Burnout Revenge that I remember seeing at all.

Pft. “Enhance”. Sure they will.

Well they don’t exactly have much room with all the current ads cluttering the screen. Ok they are for Xbox games and vids etc, but they are still ads and still clutter. Why can’t I turn off channels like Spotlight & Inside XBox which I have no interest in? Why do I have to go past these to get to “My XBox” where the stuff I regularly use is?

Hit the right trigger twice and you’re at ‘My Xbox’, regardless of which channel you had selected before.

I’m absolutely certain they place those Gillette vans in places that guarantee a crash and subsequent slow motion smash sequence, swooping around the details of the Mach 3 FUSION POWER logos.

Ubisoft has been using in-game ads for ages.
I remeber playing the same level of R6Vegas that I’d played loads of times before, but suddenly noticing an ad on a wall for a new film that was due for release that week or something.
Plus obviously you’ve got sports titles that use hoardings all over the place, like FIFA/NBA etc…
But as for XBL, the most offensive ads that I’ve seen are the trailers that auto-play with sound as soon as you past the movie downloads section of NXE.

@Blerk
Nice shortcut thanks – though I’d still like to start there.

I’m going to make this clear to anyone at Microsoft reading this (none, I imagine): advertisements in any form will NEVER enhance the player experience.

News about new add-on content, releases and downloadable games on the console that you own doesn’t interest you in the slightest? Really?
To be honest, I think Microsoft are smart enough not to completely clutter the entire interface with ads. Is one or boxes in the empty corners of the dashboard really going to be that intrusive to your gameplay experience?
