Rumors that Frontier’s long-in-the-works Elite 4 will be hitting PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 have surfaced.

During a lecture, co-creator of Elite and Frontier bossman David Braben, gave a slideshow presentation that revealed the company’s current projects which include Elite 4, The Outsiders, and other unannounced projects.

Braben stated last summer that the firm was looking at bringing the title to consoles, and that it had been in development for so long because of resource issues.

The Outsider, previously confirmed for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, is an open-world action game based around a police officer and has yet to receive a solid release date.

If Elite 4 really is in development for PC/360/PS3 then there is no way its like the old hardcore Elite with newtonian physics model for space flight.

It would have to be a space trader light, with combat like Tie Fighter/Freespace to stand any chance with today’s audience on all three platforms. The Elite games were a major chore not even the PC gaming audience would be down for more of that these days.

I hope it is like Freespace with trading bolted on as there is a real lack of quality space games.

Well, the Frontier games had stupidly over-realistic physics, but the original Elite most definitely didn’t. Docking might’ve been a bit tricky at first, but in-space dog-fighting was super-simplified and all the more fun because of it. Making Elite 4 like Frontier would be a major mistake, they need to go back to the original for their inspiration.
