You don’t have to be a “hardcore, maniac user” to enjoy Bayonetta, says Sega

Ever felt put off by the amount of button presses you need to learn in order to pull off the devastating combos in games like Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden? Well, Sega to rescue as during the E3 demo of the awesome looking Sega slasher Bayonetta, a company rep explained that you won’t have to be a member of the hardcore elite to get a lot of enjoyment out of the game.

Compared with the hardcore, fast-combo pulling crowd “there’s a larger demographic of casual gamers and so for people who are new to this type of game or simply aren’t at that level there’s an Easy mode and a Very Easy mode,” said the rep.

“What those allow you to do is some of the more complex combos that require some of the very complex button inputs will be easier to pull off with the same level of ease [as the hardcore gamer].

“Huge dynamic levels have been created throughout the whole game – even a casual player could get the full experience, that full level of enjoyment out of it without having to be this hardcore, maniac user.”

Bayonetta is out for high def next-gen consoles later this year.

If they can dial it down to a “God of War” level of button pushing then I could be convinced to have a go.

The original DMC I couldn’t get anywhere with on ‘normal’ because I just couldn’t remember any of the moves. So I put it onto ‘easy’ which simplifies the controls and…. it was too easy. It needed something in between ‘you have 12 fingers’ and ‘you are a penguin’.

Well, we’re one small step closer to figuring out what a Blerk is. It doesn’t have 12 fingers and it isn’t a penguin.

On topic: I only looked at this at E3 — didn’t touch. Hopefully the game will have a Blerk mode, though it seems to be borrowing liberally from Devil May Cry, so I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much.

If it’s any consolation, the game looks amazing, so long as you have no shame whatsoever and enjoy the prospect of playing as Sarah Palin in a hairsuit that tends to slip off. Tons of crazy action — again, very much like DMC — and some seriously hilarious boss fights. I’m definitely keeping an eye on the game, if only because it seems less QTE-heavy than God of War. And because I’m a sucker for DMC games.

If it features a ‘Blerk Mode’ then I shall be obliged to buy it regardless.

Unless it turns out to be Bayonetta herself being replaced with a sort of hairy bloke. Which doesn’t sound nearly so appealing.
