Motion controls for big action games? Not likely, says Ubi boss

While Natal and PS3′s motion tech presents a large opportunity for some games, Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot has told CNBC that big action games will most likely continue to be played on traditional controllers.
“The current pad for gamers is giving them a lot,” he said on the subject of whether or not games like Assassin’s Creed or Splinter Cell will be played with motion-sensing.
“They play for hours, so they don’t want to get up and down. They don’t want to be tired after five minutes. These games are about reactivity.”
Guillemot added, however, that he expects as much as 80 percent of the company’s future family games – including Rayman – to utilize motion-sensor controls.

Translations: Most of our hardcore male gaming audience is fat and lazy, and we are more than willing to pander to that stereotype.

@Michael
Bullshit he is right. People want to relax while playing games and not move constantly. Motion control isnt the future.

It was a joke.
People’s sense of humour on the internet = fail.

Well, I’m more concerned about looking like a dork in the eyes of my wife, miming the action movements of the hero, but then I’m into my very late 30′s now. I think my 10 year old son wouldn’t actually mind (at least when there are no potential girlfriends around
).

Because acting like a dork and having some silly fun is evil and wrong, amirite?
What’s wrong with looking like a dork from time to time? If the sales of the Wii are anything to go, there’s plenty of people not so up themselves that they’re not willing to look a bit stupid from time to time for a bit of harmless enjoyment.

With the Wii remote you dont have to stand up. With many games you can still just sit and have fun….

You clearly haven’t played Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

It would be cool to play Leisure Suit Larry on motion control…

I swear. This is the Wii remote arguments all over again.
“Ooohhh I can’t wave my arms about like a mong”
“Weeee, I’ll get tired and look like a bafoon”
FFS, just because a game like Ricochet is possible doesn’t mean ALL games have to be full body spazz fests. There have been a lot of talk about head tracking and some about hand comms for SWAT type games.
USe your imagination a little.

The only thing that is “wrong with looking like a dork from time to time” is that I’m already having a hard time convincing the missus that my gaming habit is not pointless and silly for a man my age
BTW, I’m not dissing Natal in any way. I’m actually excited for it after the E3 presentation, especially Lionhead’s part. But I don’t feel big action games should be a big part of its repertoire. I mean, can you imagine playing Ninja Gaiden on Natal?

Wow. That would be brilliant. Playing Assassins Creed 2 using Natal, finding a good building for Enzio (Is that his name?) and diving off my bed head first as my face merges with the dense cushioned carpet.
