FFXIII’s 360 version only a few months old

ffxiiia

FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase told GiantBomb at E3 that work only started on FFXIII’s 360 version when the game’s Japanese demo was released.

“Up to the trial demo version that was released [in April] in Japan, [FFXIII] was PS3-only in terms of development,” he said.

“The Xbox 360 version is definitely following after the PS3 version, but [we] were finally able to come to a point in the PS3 development where some of the staff could take their hands off and start programming the 360 version.”

The title’s supposedly out in the US on 360 early next year.

Good job the 360 is easy to program for then…they should have it done in no time.

I suspect this isn’t quite as impressive as it sounds, given that they already put many man-years of work into making their engine multi-platform. :-D

  3. crackdude said:

    I gotta say, I’m impressed.
Although the engine was made multi-platform since while back, porting this behemoth game in such short period of time is something I’ve never had heard of..

  4. I’m still waiting to hear the news that they used the PS3 version to demo during the MS E3 conference, just for the LOLZ :P

Mind you, I want it so fucking bad.

  5. Blerk said:

If they did use the PS3 version, they went to the trouble to change the button graphics. :-)

Ducktales! I don’t believe a word Square Enix says. They’ve been working on the Xbox 360 version for as long as they’ve been working on the PS3 version. They always had plans of a multiplatform release.

  7. “porting this behemoth game.”

To be honest, it’s not looking like much of a behemoth at all. If anything, it’s looking horrible dull and restrictive.

I remember, when they originally announced this, they said they wanted combat to look like what we’d seen in Advent Children, and the first trailer was supposed to be indicative of that. The end result? It looks horribly sterile and unimpressive.

This game will probably have lots of extremely polished cutscenes, with impeccable teens who have perfect skin angsting about their life problems over trying to save the world.

But a behemoth from a gameplay perspective?

If past experience is a good judge of future experiences, I’m expecting a very linear affair with little to no diversity or additional content beyond what you find in the main story.

  8. “If they did use the PS3 version, they went to the trouble to change the button graphics.”

    Cover-up of the century ;)

  9. Anyone want a tin-foil hat? I have a few sitting in the closet.

With regards to button graphics, assuming you have the assets (which Square will do, having already produced 360 games) you can change button graphics in a game’s presentation with a 3-byte edit of a header file. You wouldn’t even need to recompile anything.

The same goes for any data that can be applied in a modular fashion – such as on-screen language or spoken word vocals for example.

    Simples! [chirp]

    Pure comedy.

  12. Shatner said:

Hi GIGA, how’s that PS3 price cut coming along?

  13. Aimless said:

No one actually thinks the demo was running on a PS3, right? There would be no reason for them to do that whatsoever.

  14. Dr.Ghettoblaster said:

Here’s hoping both versions turn out exactly alike so all the fanboys will have no reason to flex there invisible muscles.

  15. Aimless: You’d be surprised what those tin-foil hats can do to some people.

“Here’s hoping both versions turn out exactly alike so all the fanboys will have no reason to flex there invisible muscles.”

Expect about 4 discs, slightly grainer textures and compressed sound for the 360 version, but from a gameplay perspective they, should be identical.

  16. Shatner said:

Tin foil hats? I hear those are infinity more complicated than bacofoil hats.

I’d attempt to lecture someone on the differences of different types of foil hats – but seeing as I’ve not got a clue as to how they’re made I guess I shouldn’t really try.

    Eh O’Connor? ;)

Does wearing a tin-foil hat remove your abilty to spot a joke? Time to takes yours off Michael. And clear out that closet whilst your at it.

  19. Cort said:

Michael has no sense of humour, unless it is hidden behind that huge belief that he is always right.

  20. @ Geki and Cort.

It’s called dry wit. You’re the ones assuming I’m being entirely straight faced in my remarks.

    BTW, I *am* always right.

    …c wat i did thar?

    O’Connor,

You fail at dry wit. Alas, whilst you may be chuckling to yourself and comparing (wahey more comparisons!) yourself to Noel Coward, most other people get the impression you’re a humourless cunt.

Not me of course, I’m not especially fond of using the c-word. I do, however, find you hilarious. I particularly like it when you pre-emptively accuse anyone that doesn’t see things your way as a fanboy or conspiracy theorist. And how you’re a hardware and programming guru but you’re not quite up to the demanding task of installing a bit of javascript unaided. And then you fail to counter a statement with anything better than whimsical but evasive posturing like “Troll is a troll” or “*yawn*” or some other empty gesture that never addresses the actual counterpoint made to your ‘expert’ statement.

No O’Connor. You’re hilarious. Just not in the way you’d like to think you are. :)

Come on Mikey baby, give us another one of your classic bits of grasping-at-straws-in-the-hope-you-sound-like-an-expert lines. They’re infintely entertaining. That’s a fact!

/chubbs O’Connor’s cheeks because if you lol and grin a lot you can say whatever you like to someone and pretend you’re just joshing!!

  22. “You fail at dry wit.”

Much like you fail at trolling.

  23. Tonka said:

I read on Famitsu that the 360 version only will have 1/5th of the content. Mostly due to lower rez assets and mono sound for all voice over.

  24. Gekidami said:

Got a scan or anything to that Tonka?

  27. Shatner said:

@22 Surely, if someone fails at trolling then the implication is that their statement is considered, well thought out and worthy of merit and not a deliberate attempt to incite or antagonise!

It’s good to see O’Connor giving respect where it’s due. :D

Seems to be common place with shatner and mike.
