SCEE: Consumers will “upgrade” to PS3

ps311

SCEE president Andrew House told OPM’s Tim Clark at E3 that we’re going to see people buying PS3s as an “upgrade” from less powerful consoles later this cycle

“If you look back at previous lifecycles, like PS2 versus N64, we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the lifecycle when the price point was right for them,” he said.

“I think we’re going to see this later on PS3, and the fact that it’s a Blu-ray player as well and that there’s a [greater] wealth of network based experiences than are perhaps available on the device they already have will add to the proposition. I think that will definitely be a factor in the marketplace.”

There’s a full interview here.

That sounds perfectly plausible. They could also chose the 360. That BluRay thing hasn’t really paid off yet has it? By the time PS3 is at a reasonable price 100Gbit free wireless broadband will be everywhere anyway. no need for discs then.

Oh man, I hope this doesn’t become a new marketing meme. Lestaways I hope blogs don’t keep reporting on it if it does.

So… people with old machines buy new machines once new machines are cheap. What a shocker.

But wait… most new machines are already cheap. And haven’t we been waiting for that ‘deluge of PS2 die-hards to finally go to PS3′ for at least two years?

Waiting and relying on that happening seems a dangerous strategy. For one, they might have all already bought 360s or Wiis, there’s no way to tell. For two… they might never upgrade. Ever.

Oh wait, ha ha! My bad! The whole thing’s a dig at the Wii, isn’t it? The tinker.

Weren’t the N64 and PS2 in completely different generations? Not to mention the fact that most people who upgraded would have been upgrading from PS1s.

Just a tiny, tiny thing, but he’s not talking to Edge, he’s talking to our Timmy. Interview’s up on the Edge website because, um, haven’t got one yet.

Go PlayStation! etc.

Whoops. You might want to talk to Mr Ivan about that.

“…the executive told Edge in an interview published today.”

Now I feel like the guy at the restaurant who complains loudly about his dirty fork, then gets a new one and has to sit there dealing with being the complaining guy.

Good wine list, though.

I’m shocked and appalled that the president of SCEE might not be presenting an entirely objective and balanced argument.

Hell, if development forecasts are correct and the X360 is near maxing out, then perhaps PS3′s fully utilized potential as a system will count as an upgrade to Wii, and even some X360 users. Time, and a lot of hard work by developers, will tell.

I always wondered how GTA4 would have looked if it’d had been developed straight for the PS3 (50GB blu ray disc) and not had the 8GB disc limitation set by X360.
