Nintendo unmoved by Sony and Microsoft motion control

Nintendo UK general manager David Yarntonhas said the company doesn’t feel threatened by Sony and Microsoft’s recent ventures into the motion control market.
“We’ve got our product out there and we’ve had that out for a while. We haven’t seen anything current from those guys to comment on it,” he told GI.
“We’re looking at innovation all the time, as you saw with the Vitality Sensor that was shown briefly today. There are always things coming through that enable us to keep two steps ahead. On top of that we’ve got one or two other areas to compete with in other forms of entertainment.
“One of the reasons why we have a lot of different products and offerings for different people is because we’re competing for free time and entertainment time,” he went on. “Not just with videogames but movies and other entertainment. That’s more what we’re concerned with.
“We’ve got lots of exclusive content and obviously we have our own franchises and IP – you’re not going to see Mario on any other console. Even on third party there’s a lot of exclusive content so we’re not worried about that.”

They dont really need to feel threatened either, its just an add-on gimmick for PS3 and 360, whereas the Wii was build from the ground up based on that gimmick.

And thank Christ we’re not going to see Mario on any other console. Keep him reigned in, the irritating little sod.

Vitality Sensor indeed!
Anyway…
Imagine Mrs Jones walking into John Lewis and seeing a brand new, but still cheaper, HD Milo having a chat with someone, next to a more expensive SD Wii Sports Resort with about 40 polys on the entire screen.
Which one is she going to get for little Johhny Jones??

In terms of marketable buzz, they might want to worry if MS ever get Natal off the ground. It’s the sort of shit you will see on Oprah and in mainstream news.
It may not be great for the hardcore… but average Joe will eat that sci fi stuff up.

@G1GA: The Nintendo, obviously.

I’m not convinced about that Blerk…
I’ve already seen two big stories in newspapers for Natal.
All they need to do is focus on the navigating the dashboard like Minority Report, and you pretty much can’t go wrong.

But it feels different – it feels more aimed at the people who are more comfortable with technology. And Nintendo still has that automatic ‘this is what you buy for kids’ thing.
Your average mum would see Milo and think it was a grooming simulator for paedophiles.

@Blerk: Feel different it might… but that doesn’t really change what captures the public’s imagination.
I’d wager getting Spielberg out there didn’t harm that one bit either.

You might be right – there was plenty of gossip among the non-gamers in the office yesterday. But we’re all techies here, I’ve no idea what your average Joe makes of it all. They probably think it’s an add-on for the Wii.

The bit with the teenage girls picking out dresses and trying them on was a killer app as far as marketing goes. Just *Imagine* what Ubisoft’s going to do with it.

True enough.
