E3 2009 – Nintendo press conference liveblog!

nintendoe3

It’s time. Nintendo will take to the E3 stage in Los Angeles today for its 2009 keynote, and the world’s watching with stern eyes.

The Kyoto monster came unstuck at the US show last year with a weak program centred on Wii Music, and there’s a lot to prove this time out. The hardcore want blood. Mario and Zelda blood. Wii Fit Plus blood. The thrill of the megaton. The flash’s heat. The desperate stench of plumber crotch.

If the sum total of today’s showing is Cammie “Pegs” Dunaway throwing a virtual Frisbee for a dog, there’ll be ugly scenes.

When? The fanboy massive holds its breath from 9.00am PST/5.00pm BST/6.00pm CET. Get our liveblog after the break.

If you’re after streaming video, try IGN, Gametrailers, Gamespot or G4.

Remember: the Sony conference follows directly after at 11.00am PST/7.00pm BST/8.00pm CET.

Yay, sales willy waving :(

So far the most impressive thing about the conference has been Cammie’s camel toe :D

I don’t think anything will ever top Ubisoft’s conference for pure “oh god make it stop”-ness

So far it’s a shame that Nintendo seem completely unable to produce a compelling new IP that isn’t dependent on a gimmicky controller.

Everything else is just weasling on a brand name from years back. And, yes, everyone does this and if you’ve got great brands you use them. Even so, when you’re pumping out your second Mario game on a console that’s already launched with a (ported) Zelda, had a Mario and a Metroid (already being bundled with a couple of remakes) – well, that’s quite uncharacteristic for Nintendo (going on past generations) What’s wrong with making something new for gamers that don’t give a shit about control gimmicks? And I don’t mean bringing Starfy over to the West after years and years.

Or maybe they’ll still announce it, then cancel it a year or two down the line like that Disaster game.

The last great, original, ungimmicky Nintendo game I can recall playing was Drill Dozer on GBA. More of that sort of thing please.

I don’t know which is worst. All the Halo games on the Xbox 360 or all the Mario games on the Wii. Geezus!

02/06/09, 6:04 pm

Mario Galaxy 2 does look great though. I think the crowd finally woke up.

OK, so that’s two things on my list now.

Loving everything I’ve seen of The Conduit, bring that one right on.

Whatever 3rd party games they have, you can pretty much guarantee that they will be better on the HD consoles…

#80

Goliath
02/06/09, 6:08 pm

So let see;
Dead Space Extraction
The Conduit
Super Mario Galaxy 2
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles

Not bad but . . . (and I love rail shooters)

New Super Mario Bros. Wii for me so far. I didn’t really enjoy SMG particularly… though I love Yoshi so maybe SMG2 will sell me.

Add that new Metroid game to that. Looks good.

#82

G1GAHURTZ
02/06/09, 6:11 pm

Not interested in Metroid any more…

#83

Gekidami
02/06/09, 6:11 pm

Metroid looks good only thing thats interesting me up to now.

#84

Robo_1
02/06/09, 6:12 pm

Ohhh, that looked awesome. There’s been a great few surprises from the big N in all fairness.

#85

Goliath
02/06/09, 6:12 pm

New Metroid. A bit more impressive. Trailer looked pretty sweet!

#86

Psychotext
02/06/09, 6:13 pm

So that’s two maybe three out of their games for me. Meh.

#87

Gekidami
02/06/09, 6:14 pm

And thats it… pretty lame really, all Nintendo are doing is milking their old IP’s and getting the 3rd parties to stick their neck out with new stuff.

#88

G1GAHURTZ
02/06/09, 6:14 pm

Good.

Finally over.

Bring on Sony!

#89

Goliath
02/06/09, 6:14 pm

That was so meh but at least we get NSMB Wii, SMG 2 and a new Metroid.

It’s finished already? Fail. Nothing interests me there at all, and that guy’s voice made it so much worse.

That was better than I was expecting for your classical Nintendo fan. A bit Mario heavy, but oodles better than last year.

Of course, there’s still pretty much bugger all in there that interests me, but I’m not exactly your classical Nintendo fan.

What did Nintendo have to do?

It’s true that their “harder edged” titles were already known, with the exception of their new collaboration with Team Ninja, on Metroid, coming in 2010, and there was a brief trailer of that hinting at what’s to come…Would you have predicted that?
You want Mario, you get a new version of a celebrated portable game, with multiplayer, for Wii. You get a new portable RPG – then, you get a lengthy trailer for a new SMG adventure!

There’s a new Warioware – with challenges you can make yourself, and share through the connect service.
They cater to the families, with wii sports resort, and
wii fit plus (that’s a proven success and they give people more of it. There are games for the t(w)een market. There are new editions of classic games, in the flavour of Mario V Donkey Kong, again with the share mechanic, and creation/edit facility.

They talked about Everyone’s Game. I don’t believe they delivered anything less – even if I really don’t know about this Vitaly Sensor, lol.

They listened to feedback – Cammie was felt to be the weakest link of last year’s conference, so this time, she actually takes centre stage, leading the audience through the presentation; with Reggie and Mr. Iwata (still talking good sense) and others, taking guest spot roles for sections. It cast Cammie in a far better light, I felt – which is important, if that person is going to be your spokesperson, outside the company, imo.

I have to wonder what else Nintendo could have done, to so ably cater to their playerbase, as they did here?!

@SplatteredHouse: Given the ludicrous amounts of money they’re making I feel it’s not out of order to expect a few more decent first party titles on the Wii.

well, im stoked. i haven’t even watched sonys conference yet but nintendo have won it. new super mario bros looks like some good old fashioned quality fun. Galaxy 2 = ZOMG!!! I absolutely love Galaxy (even if i did curiously think M64 was rubbish) so this is awesome news :D :D

Conduit looks like it could be ok. still not sure though. Metroid…hmm, still not convinced about 3D metroid considering how damn good 2D was but i’ll give it a chance.
res evil is, if im correct, on rails so thats a fail there. shame. new resident evil for the wii would be awesome.

screw it. galaxy 2 is coming. JOB DONE!
(oh and no more stupidly annoying smiiiiiles from cammy. she did a much better job this time)
