E3 2009 – Nintendo press conference liveblog!

Tuesday, 2nd June 2009 13:37 GMT By Patrick Garratt

It’s time. Nintendo will take to the E3 stage in Los Angeles today for its 2009 keynote, and the world’s watching with stern eyes.

The Kyoto monster came unstuck at the US show last year with a weak program centred on Wii Music, and there’s a lot to prove this time out. The hardcore want blood. Mario and Zelda blood. Wii Fit Plus blood. The thrill of the megaton. The flash’s heat. The desperate stench of plumber crotch.

If the sum total of today’s showing is Cammie “Pegs” Dunaway throwing a virtual Frisbee for a dog, there’ll be ugly scenes.

When? The fanboy massive holds its breath from 9.00am PST/5.00pm BST/6.00pm CET. Get our liveblog after the break.

If you’re after streaming video, try IGN, Gametrailers, Gamespot or G4.

Remember: the Sony conference follows directly after at 11.00am PST/7.00pm BST/8.00pm CET.

it’s hard to get excited due to last year’s, but its also hard to remain calm. We’ll see, and pray

  2. Blerk

If Nintendo announce one thing which I find exciting then they’ll have exceeded my expectations. :-)

    #2 6 years ago
  3. Patrick Garratt

Mario. Has to be. It’s the shortest conference out of the lot. My money’s on the plumber being the star attraction.

  4. No_PUDding

    Pikmin 3, and Zelda!

    #4 6 years ago
  5. Blerk

Still looking for my ‘one thing’, then. :-D

    #5 6 years ago
  6. Gekidami

It’ll be 90% sale figures, 5% stupidity, 3% crappy games and 2% half interesting games i bet.

    #6 6 years ago
  7. Patrick Garratt

I’m actually looking forward to seeing Wii Fit Plus, oddly. Just from a geek perspective.

    I should sleep, I think.

  8. tenthousandgothsonacid

So are the same people covering both this and the sony conf. Is it in the same room ? Will there be a massive bundle (to use the schoolboy vernacular) from one room to the other ? What happens if Nintendo overrun ? etc ?

    #8 6 years ago
  9. anasui

my pessimist half says it will be more like Gekidami’s ravaging anti-nintendo galore. My optimist half (well, more like 1/6) says there will be a teaser for the new Zelda and Pikmin 3. No Mario unless its for DS, rather too early for a Wii one

    #9 6 years ago
  10. deanimate

    2D Metroid = Instant Win.

    #10 6 years ago
  11. Gekidami

I’d be happy is there was a new Zelda or Metroid, i’d be willing to undust my Wii for them.

    #11 6 years ago
  12. deftangel

Charts are a certainty at this one.

    #12 6 years ago
  13. Patrick Garratt

OK. Getting mild pump on now.

    #13 6 years ago
  14. Hunam

    You’ll go blind you know.

    #14 6 years ago
  15. Patrick Garratt

About 30 minutes before I’ll probably be in a vague state of shock.

    #15 6 years ago
  16. ashers2ashers

    @ Geki:
Don’t you mean “dust” your wii, for them? ;)

    #16 6 years ago
  17. Patrick Garratt

    Getting motivated now. Go, Mario.

    #17 6 years ago
  18. Johnny Cullen

Pikmin 3, new Mario, new Zelda or GTFO!

    #18 6 years ago
  19. SplatteredHouse

    Ice Climbers.

Nathan’s got his conference wrist band and he’s waiting for the doors to open. Fucking come on!

I hope the video situation is better than it was yesterday with MS.

    #24 6 years ago
  25. Patrick Garratt

IGN crashed on me in the MS conf.

    #25 6 years ago
  26. Patrick Garratt

OK, we’re live. Nathan’s in and online. Good luck!

    #26 6 years ago
  27. Psychotext

I’m putting money on a long slideshow of oldies enjoying the Wii / DS. :D

    #27 6 years ago
  28. OrphanageExplosion

This is the single-most greatest intro to a news piece in the history of the world ever. I can almost *smell* Mario’s genitalia… and I like it.

    #28 6 years ago
  29. OrphanageExplosion

Create surprise and then put Mario on-screen? Hahaha!

    #29 6 years ago

Isn’t it ironic that after all the waggle, Nintendo are now going back to good old 2D?

    #30 6 years ago
  31. Psychotext

    I like that.

    #31 6 years ago
  32. Psychotext

    I don’t like this.

    #32 6 years ago
  33. DrDamn

Errr – 4 player 2.5D platforming? I feel like I’ve played that before somewhere … Nintendo copying Sony?

    #33 6 years ago
  34. Psychotext

I think I’m watching last year’s conference by mistake.

    #34 6 years ago
  35. Syrok

Wiimote looks a bit outdated after the reveal of Natal (?), yesterday.

    #35 6 years ago
  36. Robo_1

Wii motion plus looks fun, it’s just a bit worrying that pretty much all this was shown last year :(

    #36 6 years ago
  37. Psychotext

    Bowser’s internal pipes… good lord.

    #37 6 years ago
  38. Goliath

Anyone else thoroughly underwhelmed by Nintendo’s conference thus far?! Yikes!

    #38 6 years ago
  39. Robo_1

    I expected nothing less :(

    #39 6 years ago
  40. Syrok

Why does Cammie look upwards all the time?

    #40 6 years ago
  41. Psychotext

Nathan seems fairly impressed by Golden Sun.

    #41 6 years ago
  42. OrphanageExplosion

Golden Sun: have we just witnessed the world’s first liveblog orgasm? I feel oddly violated.

    #42 6 years ago
  43. Roybott

Do Nintendo really think my mum is watching this conference? – No? Then why show videos for that stuff?

    #43 6 years ago
  44. DrDamn

There is a better emphasis on the more traditional games, but Nintendo don’t always come across that great in these things. Underwhelming is pretty much my reaction so far too though.

    #44 6 years ago
  45. Robo_1

COP looked decent though, pretty spiffy graphics for DS too.

    #45 6 years ago
  46. Syrok

Yay, a dress-up game for DS.

    #46 6 years ago
  47. Gekidami

My god! All these killer apps!

    #47 6 years ago
  48. Syrok

    play. create. share. :)

    #48 6 years ago
  49. Goliath

Man, I don’t know who’s worse right now, Nintendo’s presser or Ubisoft’s. God, do I have to sit through this!

    #49 6 years ago
  50. Goliath

    @ Gekidami

    Sarcasm? o_o

    #50 6 years ago
  51. Robo_1

    Yay, sales willy waving :(

So far the most impressive thing about the conference has been Cammie’s camel toe :D

    #51 6 years ago
  52. Psychotext

I don’t think anything will ever top Ubisoft’s conference for pure “oh god make it stop”-ness

    #52 6 years ago
  53. Psychotext

    “Cammie’s camel toe :D”

Do what now? lol Your feed must be a shitload better than mine. ;)

  54. Shatner

So far it’s a shame that Nintendo seem completely unable to produce a compelling new IP that isn’t dependent on a gimmicky controller.

Everything else is just weasling on a brand name from years back. And, yes, everyone does this and if you’ve got great brands you use them. Even so, when you’re pumping out your second Mario game on a console that’s already launched with a (ported) Zelda, had a Mario and a Metroid (already being bundled with a couple of remakes) – well, that’s quite uncharacteristic for Nintendo (going on past generations) What’s wrong with making something new for gamers that don’t give a shit about control gimmicks? And I don’t mean bringing Starfy over to the West after years and years.

Or maybe they’ll still announce it, then cancel it a year or two down the line like that Disaster game.

The last great, original, ungimmicky Nintendo game I can recall playing was Drill Dozer on GBA. More of that sort of thing please.

  55. Gekidami

    Its over? wtf?!

    #55 6 years ago
  56. Gekidami

    oh wait no lol

    #56 6 years ago
  57. Roybott

I’m actually going to load up some revision and do some work… this is just boring!

    #57 6 years ago
  58. Syrok

I love how enthusiastic all the presenters are.

    #58 6 years ago
  59. Robo_1

Oh Christ…. HELP! It’s like pulling teeth this.

    Nintendo: Kings of swag!

    #61 6 years ago
  62. Roybott

    HAHAHAHAHAhahahah VitalitySensorLOL

    #62 6 years ago

    What stuff?

So far my list says NSMB Wii.

    That’s it.

  65. Goliath

God dammit, that place is so quiet everyone is asleep. Wii Vitality Sensor?! Really?! That’s all you got?!!

    #65 6 years ago
  66. Gekidami

    The vital censor thingy…

    #66 6 years ago
  67. Robo_1

Oh my lol.. actually I could do with a pulse detector for this conference, badoom tish.

    #67 6 years ago

    Measures your PULSE!?!?!?!?

  70. Goliath

Okay, Nintendo sucks more than Ubisoft. Hurray!

    #70 6 years ago
  71. Psychotext

    Oh, more Mario… that’s great.

    #71 6 years ago

    #72 6 years ago

  74. Psychotext

    Ahh… shit, Yoshi. I likes Yoshi. =/

    #74 6 years ago
  75. Goliath

I don’t know which is worst. All the Halo games on the Xbox 360 or all the Mario games on the Wii. Geezus!

    #75 6 years ago
  76. Goliath

Mario Galaxy 2 does look great though. I think the crowd finally woke up.

    #76 6 years ago

OK, so that’s two things on my list now.

    #77 6 years ago
  78. Robo_1

Loving everything I’ve seen of The Conduit, bring that one right on.

    #78 6 years ago

Whatever 3rd party games they have, you can pretty much guarantee that they will be better on the HD consoles…

    #79 6 years ago
  80. Goliath

    So let see;
    Dead Space Extraction
    The Conduit
    Super Mario Galaxy 2
    New Super Mario Bros. Wii
    Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles

Not bad but . . . (and I love rail shooters)

    #80 6 years ago
  81. Psychotext

New Super Mario Bros. Wii for me so far. I didn’t really enjoy SMG particularly… though I love Yoshi so maybe SMG2 will sell me.

Add that new Metroid game to that. Looks good.

    #81 6 years ago

Not interested in Metroid any more…

    #82 6 years ago
  83. Gekidami

Metroid looks good only thing thats interesting me up to now.

    #83 6 years ago
  84. Robo_1

Ohhh, that looked awesome. There’s been a great few surprises from the big N in all fairness.

    #84 6 years ago
  85. Goliath

New Metroid. A bit more impressive. Trailer looked pretty sweet!

    #85 6 years ago
  86. Psychotext

So that’s two maybe three out of their games for me. Meh.

    #86 6 years ago
  87. Gekidami

And thats it… pretty lame really, all Nintendo are doing is milking their old IP’s and getting the 3rd parties to stick their neck out with new stuff.

    #87 6 years ago

    Finally over.

    Bring on Sony!

    #88 6 years ago
  89. Goliath

That was so meh but at least we get NSMB Wii, SMG 2 and a new Metroid.

    #89 6 years ago
  90. Psychotext

    #90 6 years ago
  91. Pyrix

It’s finished already? Fail. Nothing interests me there at all, and that guy’s voice made it so much worse.

    #91 6 years ago
  92. Blerk

That was better than I was expecting for your classical Nintendo fan. A bit Mario heavy, but oodles better than last year.

Of course, there’s still pretty much bugger all in there that interests me, but I’m not exactly your classical Nintendo fan.

    #92 6 years ago
  93. SplatteredHouse

What did Nintendo have to do?

It’s true that their “harder edged” titles were already known, with the exception of their new collaboration with Team Ninja, on Metroid, coming in 2010, and there was a brief trailer of that hinting at what’s to come…Would you have predicted that?
You want Mario, you get a new version of a celebrated portable game, with multiplayer, for Wii. You get a new portable RPG – then, you get a lengthy trailer for a new SMG adventure!

There’s a new Warioware – with challenges you can make yourself, and share through the connect service.
They cater to the families, with wii sports resort, and
wii fit plus (that’s a proven success and they give people more of it. There are games for the t(w)een market. There are new editions of classic games, in the flavour of Mario V Donkey Kong, again with the share mechanic, and creation/edit facility.

They talked about Everyone’s Game. I don’t believe they delivered anything less – even if I really don’t know about this Vitaly Sensor, lol.

They listened to feedback – Cammie was felt to be the weakest link of last year’s conference, so this time, she actually takes centre stage, leading the audience through the presentation; with Reggie and Mr. Iwata (still talking good sense) and others, taking guest spot roles for sections. It cast Cammie in a far better light, I felt – which is important, if that person is going to be your spokesperson, outside the company, imo.

I have to wonder what else Nintendo could have done, to so ably cater to their playerbase, as they did here?!

    #93 6 years ago
  94. Psychotext

@SplatteredHouse: Given the ludicrous amounts of money they’re making I feel it’s not out of order to expect a few more decent first party titles on the Wii.

    #94 6 years ago
  95. deanimate

well, im stoked. i haven’t even watched sonys conference yet but nintendo have won it. new super mario bros looks like some good old fashioned quality fun. Galaxy 2 = ZOMG!!! I absolutely love Galaxy (even if i did curiously think M64 was rubbish) so this is awesome news :D:D

Conduit looks like it could be ok. still not sure though. Metroid…hmm, still not convinced about 3D metroid considering how damn good 2D was but i’ll give it a chance.
res evil is, if im correct, on rails so thats a fail there. shame. new resident evil for the wii would be awesome.

screw it. galaxy 2 is coming. JOB DONE!
(oh and no more stupidly annoying smiiiiiles from cammy. she did a much better job this time)
