Nearly 9,000 games trade staff made redundant in last year

Monday, 11th May 2009 12:02 GMT By Patrick Garratt

Up to 8,450 game industry professionals have lost their jobs since July 2008, according to analyst Wanda Meloni.

Around 6,300 jobs have been lost from the North American trade, the rest coming from Asia and the UK.

Meloni noted that multiple studios have bitten the dust during the period.

“A handful of others are on life support, operating with a skeletal workforce and actively looking for buyers,” she said.

well pc game devs are doing fine, and pc gaming is ression proof. In fact pc gaming companies are hiring in this ression. World of war craft is the game that is keeping actvisionblizzard alive and well. Another exmaple eve online grew 300 000 gamers. It’s not just mmo’s that is on fire on the pc. Eve crytek went and bought a console game company. Empire total war beat out kill zone 2. dawn of war pretty much saved THQ.

I love my PC. And yes, you are right. MMOs has changed the PC gaming landscape some what and so has the arrival of laptops – which are now being supported in terms of decent graphics cards and games that can be played on them.

No more of having a shitty intergrated Intel graphics card that couldnt even run the lowest spec game

Pc gaming is the backbone of the Pc Industry.

also i’m a mmo gamer that is why the first games I talked about was mmo’s. However Pc gaming in general is on fire from flash games to indie games. It’s making money hands over fist. It’ss only the console game devs ging bankuprt these days.

Take a look at left for dead, fallout 3,foot ball manger, empire total war

In russia, china pc gaming is smoking hot. It’s only consoles game devs that are going abnkupt these days with high production costs.

You do realise that most of those Fallout 3 copies are console ones right? (For ChartTrack it was 55% on Xbox 360, 28% on PS3, and 17% on PC)

Not to mention that they had to discount the crap out of the game because it didn’t sell nearly as well as the retailers thought it would… but that’s not related to this particular discussion.

Ok I place a bad link there, it doesn’t change the fact that asian pc, russion pc games, empire total war, football magner made boat loads of money. Indie game busineess is up and is even flash games. You don’t hear pc game devs going bankuprt! You hear stuff like crytek buying up consoles game devs!!!!

the fact reamins the doesn’t buy console games they are all must pc gamers. Pc gaming is hot right noe and puting publisher to shame and console game devs to shame.

“The worldwide game industry is expected to post revenues of $57 billion in 2009, but Western game publishers are finding it increasingly difficult to make a profit. A DFC Intelligence report shows that even though seven select Western publishers had an average increase in revenue of 50% over the past two years, they had an aggregate net loss, with the loss increasing 42% in 2008. These publishers are finding profitability extremely difficult due to a dysfunctional game market, and they face a wide range of problems, including skyrocketing development costs, platform fragmentation, piracy, used-game sales, and lengthy console transitions. ” qoute from this article

if you want more links to prove my point I am more than to give them.

Console game devs are going bankuprt!!!!!!

Um, what about Iron Lore or 3D Realms? Both of those PC developers closed down cos they ran out of cash.

In fact, just to stir things up a bit, it was suggested that piracy was to blame for Iron Lore’s closure…
