Sony to issue Ghostbusters press release today

A SCEE rep’s confirmed to VG247 that the firm is to publish Ghostbusters, as rumoured earlier.
A press release is expected around lunchtime today.
We’re waiting on comment from Atari.
The move likely means that non-PlayStation versions of the Terminal Reality title will struggle to find release, although it was reported earlier that Atari may publish the 360 version itself.
There’s no official reason for the swap to Sony as yet, although this probably isn’t the sunniest thing to have ever happened to Atari on a Wednesday morning.

How does that work? Can Sony just “take it”? Or does Atari have to let it go/want to get rid of it? If it’s the latter, why on earth would they want to?

Mike – GI article suggests Atari’s in financial trouble (again !) and needs the cash.

It would only really happen if Atari either couldn’t afford to publish it, or didn’t believe that it was worth publishing.
In which case, they’d offer it to anyone who was interested and go for the best deal.

Its rare that Sony publish IP’s they dont own (actually i dont think its ever happened), i doubt they’ll just take it like that, its probably something alot more innocent like Home content.

Yeah, I was thinking that maybe it was due to the quality of the title.

Sounds like the former, they can’t afford to publish it and get the return they need.
Bit of a kick in the teeth for the developer I’d imagine, but then if Atari manage to sort out the other format releases, it could all still work out.

Or Sony could’ve just turned up on the doorstep with a huge bag of cash. Difficult times, tempting to take whatever money is offered, no?
The game’s pretty much an unknown quantity – it might be a huge hit if Ghostbusters fever takes off around the anniversary, or it might sell to the couple-of-thousand geeks who still love it and that’s that. Can’t really blame Atari for taking the easy money route if that’s what actually happened.

I just thought this would’ve sold a bucketload on all formats and thus make bucketloads of cash for Atari, is all. Throwing away a potential cash cow when you’re cash-strapped seems to be a strange thing to do…unless of course, you thought it was going to pan at review.

Oh well, more time for the developers to polish the 360 version then.

Didn’t Atari go specifically out of their way to pick this up?
Sony own the rights to Ghostbusters through Columbia so perhaps they just paid out for some exclusivity with regards to that.

It’s funny but when Terminal Reality started conceptualizing the idea of a Ghostbusters video game. They first showed the engine and early production to Sony and they declined to publish the title. A couple years and the opportunity to sell a few blu ray discs later, they’re suddenly on board.
