Riccitiello: Current hardware cycle to be “very extended”

ps3

Speaking in a just-ended investor call, EA boss John Riccitiello has reiterated EA Sports president Peter Moore’s sentiments on the state of the hardware cycle last month, saying we’re nowhere near to seeing a full switch over in main platforms.

“Big changes are not something we’re seeing the need for in the medium term, nor do we expect that in the medium term,” he said.

“I think that arms race – I can never say that it’s done – but the relevance of doing that faster and faster seems to have subsided.

“We’re projecting… [the current generation] to be a very extended cycle.”

Peter Moore told VG247 in London recently that he had seen “no inkling” of future platforms from the major hardware companies, and that the current generation could be the “biggest ever” in terms of sales.

Even the bad pc games graphics and gameplay is starting to look and play better than consoles. Also pc gaming and pc’s are alot cheaper than consoles. There is no way consoles are going to able to be compative in the long run. Also once a console is in a deline it will be hard to make a profit on them. Not only that onlive shoud be ready in about 3 years. Crytek them self had siad that onlive should be ready in 2013.

Not only that we are in a ression so who really knows what will happen.

I hope he’s right. I still think there was plenty of oomph left in the PS2.

Don’t expect new Sony/MS consoles on shelves any time before 2014…

Good glad to hear it. I thought the last gen ended too soon. The only things I see that could push us into another gen of systems are Cloud Gaming(assuming this gens systems can’t run it), Over saturation of FPS(will prolly hit the xb360 first), Blizzard throwing WoW on the next xbox, and to be honest those are pretty long stretches. I do expect Nintendo to put a new (Wii?) system in the next couple of years. As far as graphics go…I like em no need to upgrade. As far as a tech jump that allows new system to offer new gaming experiences…I think we are beyond that to be honest – unless we are talking some sort of 3d/virtual visuals. I just don’t see a need.
I guess graphics could get better, and dev cycles could more expensive, and dev times could get longer, but I just don’t see a NEED for it. I hope this gen stays for a very long time.

I think Onlive will work, but it might not be exactly on the date they say it will be ready. http://OnliveFans.com provides some detailed info on the system. I’m hoping it all works out but I can’t see there not being any latency issues.
