Analyst says Guitar Hero will be the clear winner in its genre

Wednesday, 22nd April 2009 18:52 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

guitarheroworldtouraCowen Group analyst Doug Creutz has predicted that Guitar Hero will be the sole winner in the music genre category, and beat out all others this year.

“We believe music genre sales for the company will be driven by an expansion of the release slate in 2009, which should broaden sales to core consumers,” Creutz told Gamasutra. “We also believe that Guitar Hero is likely to face less competition from Rock Band this year, driving a gain in market share for Activision Blizzard.”

Creutz does not see The Beatles: Rock Band as being a threat to Activision.

This is mainly due to the high price point of the collector’s edition. Creutz said it will do nothing to help out peripheral sales.

He does, however, believe that Acti’s DJ Hero will freshen up the genre and cause a surge in peripheral uptake.

So The Beatles according to him is not going to do well… but DJ Hero (??) is…

I think the analyst is right in saying that Guitar Hero will sell more than Rock Band this year.
But that’s logical since there’s way more Guitar Hero games that are releasing in 2009 as opposed to only Lego Rock Band and the Beatles Rock Band.

It’s sad because Activision is just taking a run for the money with the Guitar Hero games, copying Harmonix and milking with ‘band-only’ games.
Harmonix is the real winner in the music genre, without Harmonix there probably wouldn’t even be guitar hero.

Doug Creutz doesn’t have a clue! Cowen Group should get their money back and can the idiot.

@Grannd: What are the “way more” games? Metallica… What else? I only care about consoles, personally. So, Rock Band has Beatles and LEGO… So, that’s two RB titles and one GH title this year…

Don’t forget GH: Smash Hits, featuring 48 songs, from guitar 1 through 3 and encore: rock the 80′s.
That’s a massive run for cash putting songs that are already in Guitar Hero’s back catalogue into another game. I’ll still get it regardless, as it’s got all the features of GH:Metallica, namely expert+ on drums and the ability to play songs from older Guitar Hero games on other instruments too.

There’s no doubt The Beatles Rock Band is gonna be massive. Why does he seem to think all the money’s in peripherals?
The majority of people already have peripherals that are compatible with Beatles rock band so regardless of the price, the instruments aren’t ever gonna sell much unless drastically different.
Maybe they do make a lot of money from peripherals (I don’t know), but surely there’s more profit made from producing and selling a disc and DLC – which Rock band is surely miles ahead of GH on, sales and quantity (and quality if I may say so myself) wise – than on the materials that make up the instruments costs?

Rock Band 2 is the best in the genre by a country mile, in my opinion.

I’m pretty sure the general consensus amongst fans of the genre is that Rock Band is much better than Guitar Hero. Of course, despite this, I and probably many others actually bought the peripherals for Guitar Hero, because it came out first (at least in the EU and for PS3), hence meaning Activision made more money that way.

As the market saturates with most people already having instruments, and assuming compatibility it maintained in future games, if Rock Band keeps up the better software, then it will undoubtedly win in the long term.

Unless Rock Revolution surprises us all. <_<

    @ warlock7

Here are some of the Guitar Hero titles for 2009
    Guitar Hero: Metallica
    Guitar Hero: Smash Hits
    Guitar Hero: Van Halen
Guitar Hero 5 (working title, but confirmed for fall)
Guitar Hero DS 3 (working title too, but there’s one coming)

And I’m probably still missing some.

@ Pyrix: Rock Band came out before Guitar Hero World Tour in both Europe and the US.
But Rock Band was hardly advertised for, you still can’t find the Rock Band instruments in most gameshops, while all of them have the World Tour bundle. A lot of casual gamers in Europe probably even never heard about Rock Band, but everybody knows Guitar Hero.

Van Halen ?? Come on.. they are just milking this game for every penny they can get from suckers that get these games.

Why not just add the albums? Why have to shell out another 60 bucks for a full game, and have to switch disks from World Tour, then to Metallica, then to Aerosmith, Van Halen, Motley Crue, and any other washed out band they can get on the game ( except Metallica )… crap.

Rock Band 2 came out in the EU on 21st November for the 360, and March 09 for PS3, while the band bundle for Guitar Hero came out on November 14th.

Yes, but Rock Band 1 was out for the 360 and PS3 on May 23 and september 12 respectively, including the instruments :)

They were hard to find, but I bought my Band Bundle September 12 2008, I had already imported Rock Band from America.
