FFXIII demo – three direct-feed movies

IGN’s posted up three proper videos from the FFXIII demo. Get them after the break.
The demo releases with FFVII Advent Children in Japan tomorrow, and looks shiny.
Watch. It’s pretty much awesome.

I don’t think I’ll ever understand what people find so enjoyable about this kind of combat.
Watching a black guy act like a big girl in Japanese makes me laugh though…

It looks like they’ve infused the typical, tired JPRG character design with the muted-glowy lighting of Unreal 3 engine (think Mass Effect!)
They’re definitely a little more Westernised than previous FF characters, not necessarily a bad thing. The game hinges on the story and the mechanics though, and I suspect Square won’t bust open the franchise enough to distinguish it from past FF games, which is precisely what they need to do to avoid a very stagnant dilution. Here’s hoping though, I’m all up for a good FF game. Not too sure about the animation, seems a bit wooden.

RPG styled combat offers depth and strategy rather than twitchy headshots. When you’re controlling a varied party of advanced characters and know how to exploit your strengths and apply them against the hundreds of different types of enemies you’re rewarded with character growth and tools to enhance and exploit game mechanics further. You know, the sort of XP that’s finally found its way into twitch FPS shooters likd COD4.
FF doesn’t need any more of an overhaul beyond what Square do with every single iteration of FF. They change major aspects of RPG mechanics each time. Sometimes with good, sometimes with bad results.
I’ve never seen any other developer so consistently and radically alter the formula of their key franchise as Square dare to.
Doesn’t hurt that they’re very good with the pretty either.

I don’t think I’ll ever understand how people think that mashing buttons DMC style is somehow more involved or rewarding, or enjoyable, than using a menu like in Final Fantasy. It isn’t.

That in game camera looks pretty terrible at the moment.

The camera is manual, you can move it as you like with the right stick, even during battle. If it’s bad in those videos (I haven’t watched them) then it’s because the person playing is rubbish.

“involved”, “rewarding” and “enjoyable” are totally subjective terms here.
I’m sure that you enjoy this stuff, and you are perfectly free to do so, but I’m just saying that I don’t understand the appeal.
Like I like football, but some people are totally lost as to what the appeal of ‘watching people kick a ball’ could be.

“mashing buttons DMC Style”
I take it you get mainly D ranks then? The little “Dope” in the corner might sound good, but it’s DMC code for “sucking hard at the old combos there”.
Anyhoo, I see Square still can’t make their characters move in anything resembling a natural manner. They always look and feel somewhat apart from the rest of the game, like they’re permanently walking an inch off the ground through thick air.
