EEDAR: Limited Chinatown Wars sales prove “risk” for M-rated DS titles

Monday, 13th April 2009 16:09 GMT By Patrick Garratt

EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich said today an approximate 200,000 sales for GTA: Chinatown Wars in the US last month proves M-rated games are a “risky” business on DS.

“It appears the industry may have been over-zealous with initial expectations on how GTA: Chinatown Wars would perform based upon the news it had received one of the highest quality scores for a Nintendo DS title,” says Divnich.

Quality scores alone don’t seem to be a major driver of sales on the DS, said the analyst.

“The results from Chinatown are an important benchmark for the industry, as it will be the best-performing mature rated title on the Nintendo DS to date coupled with one of the strongest mature-rated game brands,” he added.

When will publishers learn, Nintendo have a new demographic, and they are not into mature gaming, period. Still, you gotta admire Nintendo they are trying with Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Madworld, but in the end they will fall flat on their faces.

Discussing GTA as a “mature” game is pretty questionable tbh. The irony is that the new Nintendo demographic buying games like Brain Age and Professor Layton are actually mature…or..old. :P

Madworld, HOTD etc will be steady slow sellers for Sega and they’ll eventually hit their profit margins.

GTA DS will probably be a slow seller too, but for different reasons. A huge amount of it’s target audience are all playing it on their R4 cards instead of doing the right thing and paying money for it. The slightly more “mature” gamers who played the original top-down GTA games are probably the only ones buying it right now.

Nintendo don’t publish Resident Evil, Silent Hill or Madworld. That’ll be Capcom, Konami and Sega.
