Yoshinori Kitase: “We need FFXIII to have ten times the success of smaller titles”

Final Fantasy XIII’s development team’s feeling the heat, kids.
“There is an unusual sort of pressure on Final Fantasy XIII,” said producer Yoshinori Kitase, speaking in EDGE magazine.
“I’d say we need this game to have ten times the success of these smaller titles.
“But I don’t think that means we’ve compromised in terms of the game design or creativity in any way. Indeed, the development of the game has very much followed in the tradition of the previous titles in the series, welcoming input from the full range of development staff.”
FFXIII’s been in development for five years now. The demo’s out in Japan later this month.
Thanks, D’toid.

What smaller titles is he referring to? The FF13 spinoffs?
Ten times better is a measurement of scale. So if these ‘smaller titles’ do better than forecast what does that mean to that statement?
It’s pretty meaningless. Just like most ratios/scales/percentages

Square are hanging on a lot with this game.
If this game doesn’t pull in the development cost in sales, the company is *not* going to be able to ride the wave of the current recession without some severe cuts.

The smaller titles are probaly everything else Square has released this gen and have bombed in sales and in reviews.

Everyone did the “hanging on a lot with this game” with MGS4 and, you know what? Konami are still in business!
Furthermore, Square sure as heck know how to merchandise and pimp their IP – past, present and future. Didn’t we just see confirmation of yet another port of old Final Fantasies announced for the DSi?
Square’s signature titles do exceptionally well, even when people expect the climate to be against them. Look at the performance of Dissidia and Crisis Core on PSP.
Sure, FF13 is a huge budget title like GTA or MGS, but I don’t think it’ll break ‘em. Square are too canny (Eidos acquisition is sound, it offers great western distribution channels, for example) for that and they’re pretty shameless with their IP whoring these days.

I might be interested if the combat was real time and Icould go for the 3 seconds without some random encounter. FFXII just got on my tits.

Konami hasn’t been dealing with two years of poor financial estimates and major project losses. Konami were in a perfectly comfortable financial situation even before MGS4′s release.
Square’s net income is down nearly half of what it was two years ago, and the companies has reported some of its highest losses in the company’s history over the last six months.
Their current financial woes are well documented.

I’ve been doing that for a few days now. And something even weirder happened… we’ve been agreeing on stuff!

Don’t worry. Even if FFXIII doesn’t do as well as expected (which it will), Dragon Quest IX will earn more money than God anyway.
