Sony: MAG “only possible on PS3,” is an “iteration of SOCOM” [Update]

SCEA hardware marketing boss John Koller has claimed that upcoming multiplayer shooter MAG can only be built on PS3.
“MAG is a 256 online-player game which is spectacular,” he said, talking to VG247 at GDC last week.
“If you look at that competitively, it’s something that’s only possible on PS3. The processor speed, the ability of PS3 to showcase 256 players at any given time, and their actions.”
Koller went on to detail the Zipper Interactive game’s concept.
“It’s basically like an iteration of SOCOM, where you’re maybe commanding the SEALs, and someone else has the Rangers, and the Green Berets, and so on,” he said.
MAG was Sony’s “big” announcement at the end of its 2008 E3 press conference.
A movie was shown of the title, featuring soldiers, vehicles and lots and lots of guns.
It’s planned for release late this year.
Update: John Koller’s sent us the following statement as clarification to the comments made in this story:
“I wanted to clarify my comment as the broader point I was making is that our biggest franchises and our best developers from PlayStation 2 are continuing to transition to PlayStation 3, which will help spur PlayStation 2 fans to move toward next-gen gaming on PS3. Zipper Interactive is best known for its great work on the SOCOM franchise, and they’re building on their development experience to create a brand new IP in MAG. MAG is not a sequel to nor built upon SOCOM, and when the title launches this fall, PS3 owners will be able to experience intense 256-player combat, which is something that’s never been available on console before.”

Michael O’Connor said:
Tonka, GIG, as stated before, there’s a greasemonkey hack on the forums that you can use to block certain users.
Try it. This place becomes quite liberating once you do. <3
O,connor you have officially been placed in the hall of P.A.B. (pussy ass bitch) fame. The fact that this site lets gamers from all platform or console user base state their opinion on gaming matters without being banned is “LIBERATING”. Its not liberating when assholes like you try to get others censored because they have a different opinion.
Your opinions aren’t facts O’connor, at least not 100% of the time. Hell not even 50% but do you see anyone else screaming censor O’connor, No. Grow up dude you are a little sour puss.
As far as shatner goes hes only stating his opinion. If you don’t like it don’t read it. Stop spreading your hate. This site has a lot of smart people posting here for everyone to know what is mostly true and what is mostly a fanboy rant. Let them decide for themselves who to ignore.
With that said this site is a good place for all gamers of every platform and the people who post here are great and funny
Mag will probably be ok, but please don’t judge it by screen shots alone. The original team of the ps2 socoms are behind this and it should be at least half decent. P.S. sorry for the long rant

Right on evil. If anyone should be banned it should be Michael and his “i know more than you do” posts.

I would like to point out that Socom Confrontation is, in fact, awesome now that it’s been patched. I got it the day it was released in the UK and it’s really, really fun. Go get it. GO!

I don’t know, when did they give it a 5?
If you liked playing Socom online on the PS2, you’ll like Confrontation.

Evil – IF anyone should be… not that he SHOULD or anyone else for that matter…
I also play SOCOM and I freakin love the game. There is no other online game like it. BUT…..it does need work.
It did have MAJOR issues right when it came out, but the patches have help. The game is only getting better.
Either way, it sucks that MAG is getting compared to SOCOM Confrontation.just because ZIPPER made the first ones.
Zipper had nothing to do with Confrontation and im sure that MAG will be a great game.

16th March apparently.

I bought the game with the headset, kept the headset and dumped the game.

Heh. Why didn’t you just, you know, buy the headset if you were going to ignore the game? That saves you money, after all…
I love the game. It could do with a few more maps, but it’s good, tactical fun.

Look at Metacritic’s 8-ish reviews. The metascore is pulled down by the pre-patched US release version, though, which is unfortunate.

I dont want to turn this into the SOCOM Confrontation defense posts, but I just read the review, and it looks like this guy sucked at the game and thats why he hated.
Complains about the controls, which havent really changed.
Complains about the objectives, and not being able to find them.
Complains about headshots and Hardcore gamers….lol..

Don’t get me wrong, I tried it. I just have a large backlog of significantly better games to be getting through.
Besides, I only paid £32 for the game with the headset and got £15 for the game. I don’t think the headset is much cheaper than that anyway.

PT – the headset is worth the money. Its the perfect hd for PS3, and i even find myself using it on my cell phone.

Socom Confrontation is good, but the gaming media (with the rage of angry jealous xbots)destroyed its image because it came out with too many annoyances that were later patched to make the game awesome in its genre.
The bundled headset with the game is a must buy. I recommend the download because it takes up less space on the ps3 HDD than the actual disc install. Also its just great to go from a disc base PS3 game to a full ps3 game on your HDD (you don’t have to get up and change the disc
).
I wish sony would start bundling that headset with PS3′s because not everyone has a mic in Killzone 2 and that sucks.

Its not a lazy thing its a convenient thing that lets you jump back into some great multiplayer action i.e. LBP to Warhawk to Burnout Paradise to Tekken5 online. Thats four different type of games with the press of a button.
Plus every one knows PS3 owners are in top physical shape while X-bots are fat slobs

Yeah, I don’t think there is anything wrong with being excited about it.
Hell, we know less about Alan Wake for example. If this is BF2/Socom with RPG elements the director mentioned in the Gamespot interview, then I am very anxious to see how this game will turn out.
More than anything I am excited about the date.

If a game is good then it is good regardless of the platform. That said, there are two mulligans on that remark. First, a game could sometimes be better on either a different platform or it could be better if the idiotic necessity to make the PS3 and 360 versions the same was not in place.
Second, Gears of War II Multiplayer was one huge broken mess when it came out. It took far longer to get the first patch for it than did SOCOM. Yet Gears II was given a pass by reviewers. It may have been mentioned off the cuff but half the game being broken wasn’t enough to push most review scores below a 9. Does that seem equal? No.

Socom Confrontation didn’t have any single player, though, Gears 2 did.

Then if the SP in Gears 2 was absolutely perfect, give it a 75.
