Kamiya wants Bayonetta to be “sadistically hard”

Platinum director Hideki Kamiya doesn’t want you to enjoy Bayonetta. He wants you to be wounded by it.
“With Bayonetta, we would hate for someone to think it is a heartwarming tale and then buy the game to discover it is really a sadistically hard game,” said the developer in this blog post.
Further, Kamiya promised the game is replete with “hardcore battle action.”
He developed Devil May Cry, so he probably knows what he’s talking about.
Bayonetta features a sexy witch going beserk with her hair “do”. It’s out later this year for 360 and PS3.

As for the game, I really hope there’s a demo. I want to get into it and understand it a bit more.

I don’t generally agree with having so many customisation options in games, but difficulty settings on games where the developer will focus on making the game a challenge, I personally feel it should be scalable.

‘Incredibly hard but fair’ is almost impossible to achieve with current generation AI. (Except for puzzlers)
He should give up now or admit that the game will just be poorly designed and ridiculously frustrating.

Just the news I’ve been waiting for. I was concerned Bayonetta may be made too easy. I’m very glad to see that’s not going to be the case.
@No_PUD: While I agree with it being accessible, if possible as well, my own concern was that it might be too easy.

I’m not sure I agree with the sentiment expressed here which comes across as though making the game hard is done simply for the sake of it.
I’m not against hard games so long as there is balance. Ikaruga is one of the finest hard games out there. To keep the balance you need to keep everthing fair. I don’t want a hard game made harder simply because the camera system doesn’t frame the game action properly, for example.
I’m wary of Platinum Games. There’s a copious amount of style shown in their stuff so far but I’ve yet to see enough actual game to substantiate it. Okami turned out ok though.

Splatteredhouse, thats exactly my point. I’d prefer he started off with making it fair but ‘sadistically hard’ and then it was customisable through scaling basic settings back to make it easier.
Of course I say basic settings, what the fuck do I know about game design?

Well that’s one element I assume you could tweak, but you’re not a game designer either. ‘How do I make this game scalable’ is proabably a question specific to each and every single game that has different difficulty settings.

There’s a strange notion in this genre that the difficulty level needs to start at incredibly hard and work from there. It’s a barrier to entry for a lot of people that just doesn’t need to be there. There’s a lot of fun to be had in getting better and seeing the improvement and if you put people off at the start by setting the default difficulty to “Bastard” they’re just not going to bother.
