GDC: Balance Board has almost outsold PS3, says Iwata

balanceboard1b

According to MCV, Satoru Iwata announced at his GDC 09 keynote yesterday that the Balance Board has almost outsold the PS3 on a global level.

No direct quote was forthcoming but Iwata apparently went on to say that the Balance Board was a platform in its own right and offered developers great opportunities.

More through the link.

I like this new quote without a quote system!

But.. but.. Nintendo keep telling us that they’re not in competition with Sony or Microsoft so why would they want to draw this to our attention??

Strange. He said it right before the Rock Climbing demo apparently, although MCV seem to be the only ones with the story.

I could have sworn I read it in either the EG or VG247 feed.

P’raps. It’s just the internet usually headlines statements like that with quotes seconds after it’s uttered.

Oh well. We all missed I suppose. Kudos MCV.

From EG
16:47:02 -

GRAPHWATCH: another horizontal. The installed base of the Balance Board is almost matching that of the PS3 – looks about 14 million to 16 million for PS3.

Tonka: I read this yesterday, and I was reading the EG feed. Must be there.

There are more balance boards in Japan than PS3s btw. Make a story about that.

Stupid people say “No”.

It would also be a lot cheaper to make a Balance board game than a PS3 one, by and large. Especially if it’s a fitness product. That Jillian Michaels thing is doing pretty well for itself in the US and EA have certainly noticed…

The Rock n Roll Climber doesn’t look overly expensive either…

I’ve read elsewhere that Nintendo are claiming that the PS3 is at around 16-17 million. Sony said a month or two ago that they had passed 20 million (SCE use sold to customer, not shipped to retailer).

Also, Nintendo are saying that the balance board is only a million or two behind the PS3. Going by their own PS3 figure (where did they come up with that?), it means the balance board is at around 15 million – or to put it another way, over 5 million behind the PS3.

Cort, Sony don’t use sold to customer. They used to use shipped to warehouse, and then they changed it to sold to retailer. No-one uses sold to customer numbers as it’s virtually impossible to track on a global basis.
