February NPD – The Lost and Damned “would have outsold Killzone 2″ at retail

gtaivtlada4

While we still don’t know exactly how many copies of GTA: The Lost and Damned were downloaded last month, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg said last night that the figure was more than that achieved by Killzone 2 at retail – 323,000.

The exec told Gamasutra the DLC was “the most successful game add-on content we’ve ever launched,” adding, “If that content was sold at retail, it would be one of the best-sellers across all platforms. It would have outsold Killzone 2″.

It’s worth noting that TLAD launched on February 17, while Killzone 2 released on February 27.

Thanks, Kotaku.

I’m not surprised that it’s more than KZ2, as it’s a whole lot cheaper.

It might be cheaper but it’s a download which requires an online connection. That’s a bit of a bigger hurdle to leap than a simple boxed product.

There are always people who’ll be using composite video cables and play their machines offline.

I think it’s time to upgrade to HD.

What is wrong with you people!???

Ugh… standard definition! honestly…

It’s really not that bad, Giga. Well aside from the games where the developers forgot that there are many people who don’t have 50″ HDTV and make the text in their games about 2 pixels large.

Nah, only joking…

Although I wouldn’t like to have to go back to SD after having used HD.

I used to think that the difference wasn’t that much until I actually got an HDTV.

@ G1GAHURTZ

Yeah, I couldn’t go back to SD either.
In fact, I find it almost impossible to play on a sub 40 inch HD monitor after playing all my games via beamer/projector (200 inch) for more than a year now.

BTW: Your posts are much more reasonable lately, containing way less fanboyism. Congrats! :)

So is it safe to assume that Lost and the Damned didn’t beat the game above Killzone 2 (Wii Play’s 386k), or is it likely that Greenberg chose KZ2 for being a Sony exclusive? Most of that interview did read like he was specifically trying to annoy the Sony fans (and looking around the web he seems to have succeeded).

I’d love to see real figures for something like this DLC because it sounds exactly like the kind of thing DLC should be. Even if no other developer is really in Rockstar’s position, healthy sales figures might encourage a few more to follow their lead.
