PS3 passes 2 million, PSP over 3 million in the UK

UK PS boss Ray Maguire’s told GI that more than 2 million PS3s have now been sold in Britain.
The exec also confirmed that PSP has gone beyond the 3 million mark in the UK.
“If you look at the RRP that we’ve had out there for 2 million units, and compare it to PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, it’s amazing that we’ve got to this kind of level,” Maguire said, speaking of PS3.
“Actually, I’m really pleased with that – it does show that the premium product was the right strategy to have.”
There’s an interview here.

lol! I’m sure he didn’t mean it to sound like that!
“Man, I’m fucking shocked anyone’s buying the damn thing! It’s soooo expensive!2

Actually, reading that second quote a bit more carefully, maybe he really did mean it like that. Look forward to lots more stupidly expensive Sony consoles in the future.

That is a pretty badly worded statement though. I guess they’re internally expecting a huge boost should they drop the price this year.

I’m wondering if they’ll ever drop the costs as long as it’s selling, tbh.

I dunno, they desperately need to close the gap on 360 if they want to stay in the running.
How many are Microsoft up to in the UK now?

I think it was clear from other statements pre-Christmas that they really did want to drop the price but had to show they could turn a profit to those higher up. Once that was done they then had the go ahead to drop the price.

Two million in two years is good numbers

@Rock
It is very good numbers. Especially seeing as the PS3 passed 1 million in a shorter time than the PS2 did. They say Sony has it rough with the PS3, but with the console shipping numbers the way it is I don’t see it as a bad thing.

Blerk, what do you count as selling? It’s not exactly flying off the shelves.

If they’ve hit 2 million in two years then it’s selling faster than the 360 did – that took 2 years and 5 months to get to the same level

It might not be “flying off the shelves” but it’s selling steadily and probably not losing them any money. If they drop the price too soon then they’d sell more but lose money. As long as it’s actually moving boxes still, I’m sure they’ll keep the price where it is until such a time as they can significantly reduce their costs to a level where they can safely drop the price and maintain their profit.

Ah, you’re only talking about the UK. The sticky situation is that it’s selling ok-ish in Europe, but worldwide it’s getting dangerously close to the “why bother with a PS3 version” situation.

Well, I actually was talking about the whole world. It’s not setting the charts alight, but it’s selling roughly half of what the 360 is selling, which isn’t exactly single-digit figures.

According to the latest 4 guys 1 up podcast, there’s already talk like “why bother with the third place manufacturer?”. In America, Sony’s doing worse than last year at the exact same price point. Chalk it up to the recession, if you will, but the recession doesn’t seem to affect the other two players.

Seriously, like Blerk is saying, considering that its selling at a steady rate, they wont need to drop the price until something big comes along like E3, that could be when they’d do a price cut if any.
That said, I reckon a PS3 price cut on March 23rd, 2 years to the day since PS3 launched in Europe. Be that a Euro price cut or a worldwide pricecut, I dont know.

Rumours of the PS3′s demise have been greatly exaggerated, I suspect.

I think March is too soon after the Killzone 2 bundle. I reckon it’ll be Spring/Summer that they’ll drop it.

Actually, this could be a hint.
Or not, whatever.

I thought that GTA bundle was released with GTA at least I saw a few of them in Australia last summer/winter.

That’s not an unreasonable bundle but it’d have been better if they’d left Killzone 2 in there as well. Or chucked LBP in or something.

TBH, they should release one more which sees MGS4 added.
And then for first party, LBP.
Well, that or Resistance 2.

Don’t waste your time. You have better luck talking to a guy with rabbis than a xbot.
