Xbox support to end on March 2

As you can see on Xbox.com, official support for the original Xbox will end on March 2.
It’s the end of the dream. A bit of it, anyway.
“On March 2, 2009, service repairs for Original Xbox video game systems for which the Warranty has expired will no longer be available. Any other technical support, documents, and content, however, will continue to be available to all our customers. Although Microsoft is ending repair services for the Original Xbox, an upgrade program and support will be maintained for Original Xbox consoles that are still under Warranty.”
Large black box: we salute you. Thanks, Joystiq.

I remember I bought it months after it came out, and it broke down out of the blue just months after I bought it. Piece of crap. Can’t believe people still trust in M$’ products.

only problem with that system was the controller and the lack of ability to fast forward and rewind music files…and it weighed a ton

I never owned one. The games that interested me could be counted on 1 hand.

@Alakratt: Xboxes were renowned for their build quality (and weight!
), I’ve actually got three now (my near-to-launch machine and two others I bought pre-owned) and they’re still going strong. Bloody excellent once they’re soft-modded, too! \o/

As for exclusives, the Xbox usually had the better versions of games, at least for audio and the fact that dual-layer DVDs were the standard. There are a few PS2 ports to the Xbox which can run in 720p with component cables (Scarface, Soul Calibur 2 come to mind), and if you couldn’t be arsed with PC gaming, the Xbox got very presentable versions of a lot of the ‘big’ titles.

I was only asking a question morriss not putting words in your mouth. Chill out xbot before you Red Ring.
As for Retroid, they weren’t known for their build quality because they suffered the dreamcast problem ( new cleaned disk that showed up non readable). They were however renowned for their build in 10gb HDD in every system. Which I still can’t figure out why they had a sku for 360 without one besides to undercut Nintendo two years later after launch? My Soft modded xbox got me to put down my dualshock2 for 3 months (something gamecube could never have done). All in all xbox was great…and the 360 is kinda ok i guess

I got mine free as a company perk (we were allowed a free console every two years at one of my old company’s). There was no way that I was going to buy one, as I basically thought that they were crap, and I already had a PS2 and a Gamecube at the time.
Strangely enough, it turned out to be the console that I played most out of the three!
Eventually I sold my PS2 and my Gamecube just started gathering dust and the only console that ended up getting used on a regular basis was the xbox. However, I wouldn’t say that it was a brilliant experience, as I was probably still gaming more on my PC anyway.
Decent console, but the buttons on the controller were too close.

I loved the original Xbox. im also one of the few that actualy liked the “Duke” controller.
It had its issues too, like the thompson drive failures and the foxconn power supply issues. I owned 2 and had to send one for repair.
I play it every once in awhile.
Overall it was a nice system, and I ejoyed alot of tjhe games on it. The buiilt in ethernet and hard drive was awesome at the time.

@theevilaires: I’ll agree on the built-in HDD thing. It’s still the single most stupid thing MS have done IMO, and I hope they put some sort of decent storage in new-build 360s past a point.

@theevilaires – your list makes me want to go back and play some of those titles again. it also made me wish that they would come out with some more Baldurs gate dark alliance type games for the 360. im looking forward to the 360 version of Sacred 2, but would love another action rpg in the Baldurs gate world.
Strangers wrath was awesome, i wish there would be a sequel for that.
i would also add to your list.
Thief:dark shadows, Deus ex:invisable war, Morrowind, Bloodwake, and Mechassualt

I do not agree with this, the arcade version of xbox is huge for sales. I love the fact I can grab my HDD off one xbox and bring it to my other one and play on my saved games/profile. I honestly don’t see how anyone can complain with the fact the HDD is detachable. It allowed for a cheaper version for those who don’t want it, and it gives us a massive memory card

I’m looking at it from a later-life-of-the-Xbox perspective; games like Doom 3 wouldn’t have been possible on the machine if it wasn’t for the HDD being there to cache heavily to. I’m hoping MS will relax the restrictions on creating 360 games assuming there’s no HDD near the end of the machine’s life otherwise I can see that being quite a hinderance.

@ fearmonkey: those other games you mentioned i never played but i will hunt them down and try them. As for Buldars Gate that game was pure addiction. I never got a chance to play the second one but i will also hunt that one down.
@ jeremyC: I kind of see your point but their HDD solutions still suck in comparison to both of my 500gb ps3′s. I guess your way is smart also considering the epidemic of the RROD.
