MSNBC writer wants more sexuality in games

hotcoffeea

Who doesn’t right? Well, maybe not everyone.

Winda Benedetti of MSNBC does though, and she makes a valid point, even if gamers have been saying it for years.

“Adults in movies have sex,” she said. “So why shouldn’t adult characters in video games get it on or, you know, appear in their computer-generated birthday suits?”

She does, however, admit that the community and games in general have a bit of growing up to do before this can happen, citing the Mass Effect sex scene as the pillar to live up to.

When it does, look for Rockstar to go hog wild.

If I recall correctly, the tasteful Mass Effect sex scene was referred to as “Virtual orgasmic rape” by one commentator. The problem lies with the public, not the medium.

(That said, they should be more like the Mass Effect scene than the indigo prophecy scene :) )

Thats a great article, and shes completely right.
However the sad state of affairs is that Adults have the following views, one is that adults watch movies and TV, but only “kids” play games along with some very immature adults, the other is that Gaming isnt looked at as an adult entertainment medium, but as a family entertainment medium.
Their view is that kids will always find a way to play a game, so we must protect their precious witle souls from corruption.
As bruce Campbell from the evil dead series once stated “In the US, you can chop off a womans breast, your just not allowed to kiss it”

I disagree. It does seem that way when you consider how much outcry there is about sex in games vs, say, movies. But the fact is that games are still an adolescent medium. Adults play them increasingly, but the vast majority of games are teenage male fantasy fulfillment. Essentially, they’re interactive comic books.

I mean seriously, when the most tasteful application of sex in the medium to date involves alien lesbians… Not that I’m complaining or anything, but you can’t deny the primary obstacle to games being considered grown-up content is, well, the scarcity of grown-up content.

Actually… screwing the alien as a woman was just one of the options. There were equally tasteful non lesbian non alien scenes. :)
