Star Ocean 4 does proper sales on Japanese debut [Update]

According to Famitsu, Star Ocean 4 sold 166,027 units in its first four days on sale in Japan.
This apparently makes it the third fastest selling Japanese 360 game of all time, next to:
- Blue Dragon – 203,740 copies
- Tales of Vesperia – 170, 024 copies
- Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope – 166,027 copies
Spot the RPG theme? The Square game’s out in Europe this “spring”.
Thanks, Kotaku and Blerk.
Update – It’s been pointed out that these are actually lifetime sales figures, meaning The Last Hope will almost certainly go on to be the biggest-selling 360 game in Japan so far.

Nearly 25,000 360s sold in the same time frame too. Which probably means it’s going to outsell the Wii this week.

that’s really bad for such a great series

It didn’t do nearly as well as the last game, but that’s to be expected – there’s a fraction of the number of 360s in Japan as there were PS2s when “Til The End Of Time” came out.
That said, these figures kick the shit out of the DS remakes of 1 and 2, despite that platform having roughly 2 billion times more installed hardware.
It’s also a complete sell-out – there are no more on the shelves for people to buy. As usual in these cases, retail has seriously underestimated how many copies to request.

I dunno if it’s all that good really. If you factor in that there are thousands more 360′s in circulation, and the hype surrounding the title, couple with all the Star OCean fans, then it really should’ve outsold everything else to date. IMO

Well, like I said – they’ve apparently sold out of the initial shipment entirely so they’re awaiting a restock. I guess it’s difficult to gauge exactly how many units to ship when you’re in uncharted 360 territory.

It’s worth keeping in mind that those numbers above are lifetime figures for Blue Dragon and ToV. Previous best 1st week numbers for a 360 game are:
The Last Remnant – 102k
Tales of Vesperia – 101k
Infinite Undiscovery – 86k
166k from SO4 is a pretty significant improvement.

I’m kind of surprised it outsold Tales. Was that stock-limited too?

The actual console sold out when it was launched, but I don’t know if the game did.

It’s Kotaku… if there are facts involved and they’re the ones posting them? Chances are they’re wrong.
