Halo: Recon’s name changed to give “more accurate reflection of the game experience”

Halo: Recon was renamed to Halo: ODST because the original title didn’t relay the game’s “experience,” Bungie group product manager Ryan Crosby has told Gameplayer.

“We’ve changed the name because we feel that it is a more accurate reflection of the game experience,” said the exec.

“The ODSTs play a pivotal role in the human-Covenant struggle, and we want to make sure that everyone understands that you play as a member of this elite unit. While Halo 3: ODST is an extension of Halo 3, playing as an ODST makes this experience quite different from others within the Halo universe.”

Recon was announced at TGS last year, but had a swift change in title.

There’s a full interview through there.

So it wasn’t just because it was too similar to another game, i.e. Ghost Recon?

If Halo: ODST as a name is supposed to better reflect the game experience, then I’m left fucking clueless as to what that game experience is supposed to be.

Don’t so much mind the game name and the ODST are a big part of Halo, it’s just a mouthful to say.

ODSTs may perform reconnaissance roles but in the game appears to be about detailing and picking up the pieces of a FUBARed mission. Recon was probably a bit too misleading, even if that was the original mission.
