PS3 won’t pass 360 for at least two years “without a price advantage,” says Pachter
Global PS3 sales will take at least two years to pass those of 360 unless Sony can bring the machine to a “price advantage” position, Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter told VG247 today.
“Without a price advantage, they will not pass Microsoft for at least two years,” the analyst said.
“I think that means that they have to be priced at the same level or below the 360 to outsell them by a substantial amount, and I don’t see that happening this year.
“I expect a price cut, but not big enough to drive an incremental 2 – 3 million unit advantage.”
Pachter was responding to a question on whether or not he thought PS3 could get passed 360 in 2009, given that Sony announced global sales of 21 million for the machine today.
“I don’t think so without a price cut,” he said. “Microsoft has been doing a great job in keeping in front of people, and I don’t really see sales slowing down.
“That means Sony would have to outsell them by around 5 million, and they are only gaining in Japan at a 1 million annual rate, are selling more slowly than Microsoft in the US, and are gaining in Europe by probably 1 million annually.”
Xbox 360′s global sales hit 25 million in November 2008.

Uh, Xbox 360 global sales hit 28.5 million at the end of 2008, see MS financial report for the last quarter. If you are going to use up to date PS3 figures you need to do the same with the 360.

Pacther is spot on. With Sony unable or unwilling to drop the price of the PS3, and sales falling year on year, I don’t see it getting any closer to the 360′s numbers.
Looks like the HD console war finally has a clear winner.

30 million or so 360′s and… what was it?… 21 million PS3′s
If you factor about 10 million of those 360′s a f’cked by now (or about to die forever) I’d say Sony’s already ahead.

I didn’t say the 360 wasn’t good. also you big shot money making euros could have imported an american ps3. The games are region free and all of you worship american films anyway, so you could buy blu-rays off of amazon. I have the 20gb and the 60gb (the true ps3). I can play all the gran turismos and final fantasies (on ps systems)on one system.
As for the 360 being good yea for the reasons below:
1. To scare your neighbors into thinking you are building a rocket in your living room
2. Extra Christmas lights when you get the RROD
3. To catch ghost like a ghost buster with the 360′s power brick
4. To roast marshmallows with the heat it produces.
5. To see green shit cover your tv screen
6. To have a 3 year warranty on something
7. To help pedophiles (psychobitch) find 13 year old boys while evading NBC Dateline To catch a Predator
8….To catch predators (psychobitch)
9. To play easy burned games on the affordable DVD format with a modded system (saves money in bad economy
)
and 10. The CONSOLE FLAME WARS… making every day nerds like you guys, some one.

Apart from forgetting to mention the momentum shift in Europe since the Xbox 360 price cuts he’s doing nothing more than stating the bleeding obvious.
The game changer for the PS3 will be the PSThree, not incremental price cuts.

Needs to be a significant price cut/rebrand. MS have squeezed their prices to such a degree that it’s difficult to see where else they can pull any defensive manoeuvres.

I have to admit i havent been playing muuch console lately. Picked up Age of Conan and the Witcher for PC, those games are awesome.
