MGS4 to join PS3 Platinum range

Metal Gear Solid 4 is to be released as a budget PS3 title in Europe.
As of March 5, you’ll be able to buy Snake’s latest for a piffling £20, €30 if you’re on the mainland.
You should probably buy it for that, innit.

It’s been nearly a year now. I think that’s long enough, isn’t it?

Yeah, I suppose so.
Maybe it’s just the echo from the uber-hype that still lingers, which makes it seem like it wasn’t that long ago…

I didn’t think that it was that long ago…
I shall resume LOLing.

Lollage not required – it’s a savvy business move for a change. I’m sure they’re expecting lots of people to pick up a PS3 for Killzone 2 at the end of the month, and will therefore tempt them to pick up a cheapie MGS almost immediately afterwards due to reduced price and increased store-shelf presence.

There were stories before this was released that they had to shift a million copies just to break even with cost of production or something. Did they make it?

@Giga:
From Sony’s website:
“Games that have sold over 400,000 copies and have been out for over six months”

Do they still enforce that rule? I can’t imagine Ico ever sold 400,000 copies on its first run. And it’d be nice to think that ‘really highly rated but disasterous-selling’ games could get a second chance at budget too.

@ Syrok:
Yeah, sure but I think what I find funny is that this was supposed to be just one in a line of so-called system sellers.
I believe that even the pach-man was claiming that MGS4 would be the spark that sent PS3 sales flying through the roof.
But whereas titles like MGS4, a real system seller will very likely still be selling at full price for a good while yet, there seems to be a need to find an incentive to kick-start MGS4 sales.
The same way that people are hyping Killone 2 now, people were going bananas for MGS4… Just like LBP and whatever else.
It’s just funny to me, because Sony seems to be finding it hard to sell games on a games console at the moment.

Blerk, ICO sold 750,000 WW including rerelease. So you can assume it did hit 400,000 the first release.

I don’t think they enforce that rule of $400,000 and out within six months, because why is Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction still around $50-$60?
It’s sold over a million and has been out 2 years? It’s just a business move to spur sales of that game.

Just becuase the don’t drop price on the originals, doesn’t mean a thing.
Wait for E3, it’s when they announce their plat editions.
By the way, I don’t think it’s a $400,000 rule, I expect it’s 400,000 sales rule.

I’m not entirely sure there’s a rule whatsoever. Or at least… there might be a rule for which titles they don’t make platinum, but not which titles they do.
