God of War III 1080p trailer… isn’t

godofwariiia3

A supposedly 1080p version of yesterday’s God of War III trailer released by Sony today is simply upscaled from 720p, according to the ever-vigilant Digital Foundry.

“There are two videos available now for download on the PlayStation Store – 1080p and 720p – but it’s clear that the full HD video is nothing more than an upscaled version of the superb 720p trailer, and plays back with a tangible quality hit,” said the site.

“1080p has more than double the pixel count of 720p, but the filesize of the former is only about 1.5 times larger than the latter. There’s actually no point whatsoever in downloading the 1080p version as it contains more compression artifacts than the 720p version on which it is based, and takes longer to download! Indeed, it seems that the 720p trailer actually resolves more detail than the 1080p version.”

You have to get up earlier than that to catch these guys out, Sony. More detail and pics through the link.

So?

He’s saying that those downloading the 1080 will get a worse picture than those downloading the 720. Given the publicity over its immense graphical qualities, this is an interesting point wouldn’t you think?

Not at all, since everyone seemed to be quite happy.

Yes, but those who were impressed may be more so if they saw an even better quality video. And again, if the hype so far has mostly been about how amazing it looks, a point about how many will have downloaded a lower quality video than they could have – while expecting to get the best quality available – is relevant and a fair point to make.

I for one was not that impressed by it. Looks good, absolutely, but is it the graphical jump being suggested? Not for me. Certainly didn’t get the same feeling I did seeing MGS4 for the first time, or playing the Killzone 2 demo.

I think it’s more an indication of how clueless we all seem to be in the HD era. More pixels = Betterz!

Well Psycho, it does matter in some cases.
eg. people who use monitors and face is 1 foot away from the screen, like me.

Though with my current eyesight I prob may not notice. But still, pixel count matters…
a lil.

Brennan, everyone loves a good oxymoron. I know I do. Well, I probabaly may do.

Anyway, slow news day again, but I think it would be a waste of resources to amke this 1080p. Maybe the next Santa Monica game when 1080p is more popular. I still only have a 720p set so it makes no different to me.

Unless I can play it in 1080 and it downscales beauitfully. Is that what could happen? Cus then I care.

No-PUD, I saw that, my eyesight isn’t that bad :p

but seriously, my mind is so weird that i was thinking about future tv/monitor sets and how it’s good to produce the highest quality for our children’s children.
but fuck’um. (ooo I see what you mean now)

@brennan: In a way you’re making my point for me. You see, it doesn’t matter if it’s 1080p if the original source was 480p for example. Same goes for someone saying games always look better in 1080p without realising that to get 1080p you had to lose a ton of detail compared to what you could have had in 720p. :)

(“detail” in my last post should probably say effects, objects and whatnot, but I’m sure you get the idea)

Psycho, you’re on a roll today! Where’s TEA when ya need him for a diversion :p

but do you really lose a lot of detail, or just lazy programming??
When you look at a game like GT5 Prologue, (which is close to 1080p i believe) it looks pretty damn good.

I think the story is important, to be honest. Sony hung its hat on a platform of “true HD” and PS3 as a machine being able to easily output 1080p, so it does raise an eyebrow when they resort to this sort of thing.

Why call it 1080p if it isn’t?

#14

Psychotext

brennan: GT5:P doesn’t really have to worry about effects. It’s not as if you’re outputting hundreds of cars, or having them fall to bits, explode or have crowd members on fire! (Not to mention it’s scaled anyway)

Same goes for Wipeout HD. Crisp in 1080p, but it has to drop to a lower resolution when there’s a lot going on.

Pat: It’s not that unusual to have upscaled 1080p gameplay vids on the PS3 or the 360. Why they choose to do it is beyond me. Either way, it’s pretty clear that the sweetspot for this gen isn’t 1080p. At least, the 20 or so native 1080p games currently out don’t provide a compelling argument for it. :)

…and with that, back to work with me.

@ Patrick

Umm no, this story is stupid because it’s a gameplay trailer. Keyword: trailer. Just because it’s upscaled doesn’t mean the PS3 isn’t a true HD machine. Why? Because is a trailer! Maybe Sony made a mistake, I mean, this IS the first time they branded a trailer 1080p wrongly. Can’t believe people are making such a big deal out of this! Some people just love to bash the PS3 whenever they get the chance! When the game comes out, and if it says 1080p on the back, THEN you can judge if the ACTUAL game is 1080p or not. In the meantime, go back to that cheap ass green machine and play your little Gears 2.

Nobody is making a big fuss over it here and neither should it be, it’s just 1080P if… well somebody wants to be picky and want a few extra pixels.

So chill.

Psycho, I agree that the sweetspot for this gen is 720p. As for your other point about detail/graphics, I’m not so informed on the topic and I need to read a bit more, but I’ll go with you on that. (enjoy work!)

As for why they call it 1080p… may be a marketing thing.

If it’s greater than 480 and 720 (through whatever means), then it must be 1080?? Much less to confuse common folk.

As Patrick said, they do need to be called out on it.

“Alakratt said: Some people just love to bash the PS3 whenever they get the chance! When the game comes out, and if it says 1080p on the back, THEN you can judge if the ACTUAL game is 1080p or not.”

And some people see any stating of fact – that 1080p is out of the ballpark for both main HD machines, even though Sony made a *massive* deal of 1080p when announcing / promoting the PS3 – as some form of attack on their favourite machine / company.

#22

Alakratt

@ Retroid

An attack? Sorry dude, but that’s called PROMOTING. M$ does it with its little green machine. So does Nintendo. This is the first a trailer’s being attacked because of its resolution. Not the game itself, its trailer. You don’t see this being done with 360 game trailers. But what can you expect, xbots are pissing in their pants when they saw this trailer. They’ll deny it, but that’s the sad truth.

Its a pretty sad day when people would rather discuss the resolution of a video rather than talk about the game itself.

As they say, READ NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL. Well I just made that up, for the purpose of a text based information, but you catch my drift.

And believe me, all of THOSE people are evil. Patrick is the only one who sodomises his console though.

My favourite article was in reference to Gears2, and it was soemthing about ejaculating, or sperm… Who knows.

It’s goo to have enthusiasm though. And having seen reponses to this from the journalists here, you can see they are by no means one sided.

LOL! Sony are so dumb.

They CLEARLY put a ’1080p version’ to fool people into thinking that they are getting real 1080p quality out of this trailer, when that wasn’t the case.

They made it look WORSE!! How dumb is that!?

More $ony spin, more $ony LIES.

The PS3 is doomed!

#36

Retroid

The fact remains that the game (99% certainty, unless it’s the stretched CPClol 960×1080 res) will not be 1080p. That’s the point: for some in(s)ane reason they posted up a 1080p scaled version of 720p footage. And Alakratt; you’re the one who was talking about this being PS3 bashing and slinging digs at people. I’d say you interpreted this as some form of attack.

Myself?

I think it’s stupid that they bothered posting a worse quality 1080p trailer of something which wasn’t in that res in the first place. Meanwhile, I’m going to go and play Flower.

Have people here actually compared the two videos on an HDTV of 40″ or more? I’ve compared the two on my Bravia, and I would rather watch the 1080p version, but both have artifacting issues… If I watch the 720p one, then my TV still stretches it out to fit the TV, thus creating artifacting.

But anyways, why in Gods name do people notice this NOW all of a sudden?? This has been the case with every 1080p trailer from 720p sources.
It’s like complaining that there is too much artifacting when viewing an upscaled DVD on a 40″ Bravia, and rather watching the original resolution.

Poor PS3 fanboys, it must be tough being one these days. (Fyi: Im not a 360 fanboy either, I spend more time on my PC by far)

I have a widescreen CRT based HDTV, Not an LCD one. It’s picture is fantastic, but it doesnt do 720p. The TV has to scale it, or the device playing the game has to do it. The TV sucks at scaling.
I have a friend who has a PS3 and a 360, and has an older HDTV CRT model, and complains that the PS3 doesnt scale every game to 1080. On his Tv, it actually scales down to 480p, where mine would at least try to got to 1080.

Thats my biggest complaint with the PS3, for a system that supposedly is so high tech and awesome, why it didnt have a built in scaler chip like the 360 seems really stupid. It uses a software scaler which is a bad idea.

Why must it be “tough” being a PS3 fanboy these days?

The only thing I can think of (relating to this particular news item) is that it must be tough waiting for God of War III?

My PS3 does a pretty good job of scaling….

Or maybe it doesn’t need it cus I have a 720p thingy.

Weird.

I should know winning fanboy of the year, it’s not difficult to be a PS3 fanboy at all this year, nor last year.

The games have been hitting for a while.
