Edge gives KillZone 2 7/10

killzooooone21b

The latest issue of Edge, number 199 to be precise, has given Guerrilla Game’s nuclear-shooter a rather surprising 7/10.

This goes against the grain of the almost perfect scores the game has received so far.

Just what gameplay elements the magazine felt was lacking remains to be seen.

The full list of review scores in the issue are as follows:

  • Killzone 2 – 7
  • FEAR 2: Project Origin – 8
  • Halo Wars – 7
  • Race Pro – 8
  • House of the Dead: Overkill – 8
  • Let’s Tap – 8
  • Deadly Creatures – 5
  • The Maw – 5
  • Lord of the Rings: Conquest – 2
  • Tenchu: Stealth Assassins – 6
  • Crayon Physics Deluxe – 7
  • Flower – 7
  • Boing! Docomodake – 7
  • Klonoa: Door to Phantomile – 6

Jesus Christ, they’re going to get lynched. They’re going to get actually properly dragged out and hung up by their short and curlies in the village green.

Theres always one to give a game a lower score then everyone else, no surprise really.

Good. Killzone 2 is way too hyped.

True, but scoring it the same as Flower and Halo Wars (much as I love them both) seems rather ridiculous. The single player might warrant 7 at a push, but the multiplayer yanks everything back up the scale.

I by no means hate Killzone, but I love Edge :) N4G will self-destruct!

/Hearts Edge

As I’ve often said, the more critical reviews of games are often the most interesting to read, that is if they’re not just slagging off for slagging-off’s sake.

/Will almost certainly be buying Fear 2, Killzone 2, Flower & Halo Wars

Well they would, being controversial is their trade mark if every one else had given the game 7 they would of given it 10.

fear 2′s actual game play was bad…the horror sections were beautiful but that’s more walk through horror than game play.

so that scoring is really interesting

“Well they would, being controversial is their trade mark if every one else had given the game 7 they would of given it 10.”

You never have actually read EDGE, have you?

EDGE gave perfect scores for Halo 3, The Orange Box, Super Mario Galaxy, and LittleBigPlanet. Four games right there that scores extremely high scores across the board from the entire industry. Popular mainstream games like GTAIV, MGS4 and Dead Space also receive very strong review scores from the magazine.

So no, “being controversial” isn’t their trademark.

Lord forbid someone actually have an opinion different from the popular massages. Being the most popular opinion doesn’t make it the truth, or a fact.

It’s what Edge does best – create controvesy. If you want a good honest review which rates games by fun factor, playability, etc don’t go to Edge – go gametrailers, or get an average feel from the majority of professional reviews by the other review sites. Edge are simply up their own ass, if another Mario came out they would simply give it a 10 regardless of shiteness. Thanks to them 4 years ago I bought some right shite games and have never trusted them since. Flower gets a 7 next to Kilzone 2?! And FEAR 2 is ok but I’d suggest gamers to spend their good cash on Killzone 2… or at least try the demos yourself.

After playing the demo I’d say they are right on the mark, great visuals do not equal the perfect video game.

That doesn’t meat KZ2 is tripe its just another run of the mill shooter with great graphics just like Crysis was.

Monoliths track record with FPS’s is also far better than Guerrillas so FEAR2 may not pack a visual punch but its probably just more fun which is why it got a better score.

well no game is perfect, but this one sure comes close for its genre. to those of you who think the demo is what the game is going to be like, your wrong, Killzone 2 has already gone gold and a demo couldnt have been taken from that. The demo is probably from last years E3 but now just available to the public, the final build is 10x better, i guarantee it. It’s a game to get used to since its different from other FPSs in a way. Cover system is excellent in the demo, and the controls are good, COD controls arent the only controls for every FPS. If EDGE played killzone 2 like COD, then i can see why its a 7. But for any other reason is beyond me.

Maybe Killzone 2 needed a gimmick for EDGE to be impressed. Who knows, but it really puts the dampers on my hype for it, so thanks a lot.

Whatever, I’ll judge it for myself.

You know people are only human, you can’t expect everyone to be superhumanly impartial. But yeah, I wouldn’t give MGS4 an 8. Haven’t played Killzone 2 yet, which is why it kills the hype.

After playing both demos, I found FEAR 2 more enjoyable. Will be buying both though.

Can’t understand why everyone is getting into a pickle, it is their opinion after all. They don’t have to conform to consensus.

Edge:
“Killzone 2 has the technology and spectacle; FEAR 2 has class, direction and a mischievous sense of humour – and technology and spectacle. It doesn’t have that Hollywood shine or as modern a grasp of mp, perhaps, but it does have something infinitely more important. It has fun.”

That is a doozy, wow.

I agree Gekidami.

I gotta nsay, I found Killzone 2 DEMO really fun, and apparently that’s the least interesting and most scripted part.

Maybe they only played the first level….

Why do you sound so concerned Pud? You enjoyed the demo, there’s obviously lots of good reviews out there… there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll enjoy the full game.

Unless of course the demo didn’t convince you as much as you’re letting on. ;)

#34

No_PUDding
07/02/09, 11:26 pm

I said, it ruined the hype.

I just don’t understand the discrepancy.

Will the rest of the game be reviewed on hype, or is it actually the 9/10′s it’s been receiving?

The demo is not an extensive enoguh marker to make a judgement on the whole game for me. Reviews fill in the gaps.

#35

Psychotext
07/02/09, 11:28 pm

It’s a 7, tons of really good games have got Edge 7′s. If that’s as bad as it scores when hype is taken out of the picture then it’s clear that it’s still a good game.

Oh well then, genuinely the review has me worried.

Especially since I haven’t read it. All I know is the number. If they are just cross with it being a shooter without a gimmick, then I don’t care as much.

If there is glitches and other details other reviews glossed over, then I am worried.

Gotta love the constant accusations and opinions not based on fact.

“if another Mario came out they would simply give it a 10 regardless of shiteness.”

EDGE have rated many of the gimmicky Mario games quite poorly, the most recent example being Mario Kart on the Wii. So no, they don’t give Mario games a 10 “regardless of shiteness”

“Flower gets a 7 next to Kilzone 2?!”

Yeah, imagine them liking a charming, relaxing game over a first person shooter. HOW DARE THEY!

You do realise that 7 in EDGE = quite a good game with some noticeable flaws but is still quite enjoyable. Wait, you obviously don’t. You’re clearly bred on the outdated attitude the gaming press has where 7 = shit.

“edge also gave mgs4 an 8. i’d say they love the 360s a bit”

That’s why they gave LittleBigPlanet a 10, right?

And how does 8 make them 360 fanboys? An 8 means that the game is extremely good bar some small flaws, which sounds pretty accurate in reference to MGS4.

“Published Troll Extraordinaire!”

It’s become increasingly common over the years for the internet to equate anything that makes a critical analysis of a popular product to labelled as “trolling”. And we all know how sensitive the fanboys get when someone doesn’t agree with them.

Michael O Connor go back to jacking off to edge magazines

Edge deserves some defence. It’s one of the few decent publications left, and quite probably the only place left that actually scores on a 1-10 scale. It’s the fact that every other place scores on a 7-10 scale that makes Edge’s reviews seem much harsher, but in reality it’s that every other review is far too generous. The worst part is that the people who complain never actually read the reviews.

The mag arrived on Saturday and I opened it while we were sitting having lunch. So I’m flicking through and I get to Killzone 2 and start laughing. The missus asks why the review’s funny, and I say it isn’t – I’m just imagining what the internet looks like right now. :-)

“Michael O Connor go back to jacking off to edge magazines”

Why? Because I’m actually using some FACTS that back up my arguments about other people’s ignorant assumptions?

There’s plenty of reviews that EDGE write which I don’t agree with; games I think were rated too highly, games I think were rated too low, games I enjoyed despite an average score by the magazine.

What’s *funny* and entertaining about most people’s replies is how they act like the magazine is some sort of try-hard, deliberately controversial magazine because it doesn’t always agree with *their* opinions.

ecu pretty much hit it on the nail. Most people commenting don’t even seem to realise how EDGE’s score system works, and that 7 is considered a decently polished, quite enjoyable game with a few niggling flaws. And they act like over-defensive fanboys because they assume that means the magazine thinks the game is shit.

Maybe they should start realising that it’s other magazines with the fucked up scoring system. Any game that scores under 70 in those is assumed to be of unplayable quality, and they seem incapable of understanding why 5 might = average and every above it = good.

Of course, there’s the fact that most magazines are so reliant on the very industry they’re reviewing for profit that if they ever started being HONEST and CRITICAL, they’d go bankrupt.

EDGE and GamesTM are the only magazines left on the shelfves that 1) have a mature understanding of the industry, 2) can actually write like professionals.

see this is what happens when you get too attached to a magazine, it manipulates you into defending it on internet blogs with 10 paragraph comments multiple times, when really its just using you for your money. there’s lots of other publications out there Michael O Connor. go on out there and play the field champ.
