Sony: We are on track

ps31b5.jpg

In an earnings call last night following some rather grim financial results yesterday, Sony chief financial officer Nobuyuki Oneda insists the company is still on track to selling 10 million PS3′s this year.

“In terms of units, it is true that PS3, as compared to last year, is slightly worse, but on a full-year basis we believe we are on track to sell the 10 million units that I said at the beginning of the year,” said Oneda.

“Relatively speaking, [compared to] the growth of other platforms, we are behind, but it’s not the case that we are not meeting the target,” he added.

I remember when they announced that target, and how everyone thought it was amazingly low… shows what we knew. =/

It was either an amazing piece of foresight (the world looks like it’s going bad, let’s be realistic here) or the world’s worst self-fulfilling prophecy (let’s aim low and then we can gloat when we smash our targets… oh no!). :-D

If they start making profit this year then i would say their on track.

Fat chance of that, by the looks of it.

I think somewhere along the line they took the decision to keep the box price high and lower their targets – hence still on track. Why that was thought to be the best plan is debatable – but people with more info than we are privy to obviously did some sums and came up with this plan.

Wouldn’t they have made more money by lowering the box price, selling more and therefore raking in more software licensing money, though? I guess they thought not.

Arguably… but that’s a long term decision with short term financial implications.
