Co-op patch for Killzone 2? “No plans,” says Sony

Sony has moved to quash various speculation and internet rumour about co-operative play for Killzone 2 being patched in at a later date.

Speaking to videogaming247 this morning, a senior Sony representative told us that “there are no plans for co-op in Killzone 2.”

Obviously that doesn’t mean if will never, ever happen, ever ever. But seriously, stop holding your breath.

Some Killzone 2 reviews went live last night and the Guerilla Games mega shooter scored highly across the board.

No co-op? I mean, WTF? Games have been co-op since the 80’s FFS. It’s integral to the game play half of the time.

  2. Gekidami said:

Hum, GG already debunked this rumour some time ago in a interview with PSU, they said that it would be difficult to patch in due to the way the levles load.

    @Lutz
This particular example aside – as it seems a lot of the level design and set-up hint at co-op – it’s not something which should be mandatory in every game. I prefer co-op done in a structured way which doesn’t detract from the single player experience. For example I’d say the stupidity of “DomAI” in Gears 1 detracted from the SP experience, though played as co-op it was obviously much better. I want to see more games where it is the primary focus (Left 4 Dead) – or a separate experience (Resistance 2) – not shoehorned into a game to tick a box.

I have no interest in co-op. I’d imagine that’s true of many people. It’s a lot of work to please a few people.

  5. Psychotext said:

Really? I’ve played virtually all my shooty games in co-op recently. It’s fantastic having a friend along for the ride.

  6. Mike said:

I’m playing co-op Gears tonight. It’s excellent. Especially if it’s with a good friend. It’s completely given the shooter a new dimension, imo.

Still, nothing beats that atmospheric, single player experience, however. It’s just that co-op is a very nice extra. Although I agree that a game shouldn’t be marked down for not having it in.

  7. Truk said:

Yep. Can’t say I’ve played a lot of shooters recently, mind. I think the only time I’ve played co-op in an FPS was a single day of Halo at a mates house many moons ago. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe everyone does want co-op. I’d rather they concentrated on the single player personally.

I do wonder how many people outside the gaming hardcore actually care about all these features. I’d guess a lot just play single player. They might try multiplayer, but get put off by the ridiculous skill-level and time requirements to actually have any fun. They’d play co-op, but they only get a few hours a week to play games, so timing stuff with friends is difficult. I know that’s part of my lack of care for co-op.

Shouldn’t be marked down, but I also think it’s completely fair that it was mentioned in reviews.

I’d lvoe nothing more than to let someone jump in with me, even in a death match with bots.

I don’t even think KZ3 will allow it.

Co-op can make a game really, really special.

I hoped Halo would’ve made the case convincingly for FPS games having it there.

    Oh, and a side-story co-op mode isn’t a fit substitute.

  10. Truk said:

I think games can be very special without it. I enjoyed my day with Halo co-op, but I find it telling that I’ve never played a FPS co-op since.

  11. Retroid said:

Of course they can without it. I just find it disappointing that two recent PS3 FPS games have been released without (proper) co-op.

  12. Truk said:

    Fair enough! :-)

It would be interesting to have some stats regarding the use of co-op features.

  13. Mike said:

I don’t think opinion should be based on stats. You yourself have admitted that you haven’t sat and play “online” co-op in a shooter before. It’s very different to split-screen offline.

I really would consider trying it before you passed judgement on whether you needed it or not. It’s super-awesome. Like mega ultra.

  14. Truk said:

I’d need friends though, Mike. Oh and a game that supports it. I’m a PS3 owner. We don’t have any good games.

I do play co-op LBP with the wife if that counts. :-)

  15. Truk said:

Extra seriously: My argument was mainly whether adding co-op, in terms of the number of people who play it, is worth the extra expense. I guess you’d need stats that are actually based on how many people buy it because it has co-op, rather than the numbers who actually get around to playing it.

It might be awesome, but I’ve never really had the inclination, opportunity or time to try it.

  16. Mike said:

That’s all cool, Truk. But you’re saying you don’t need it/it isn’t important, which is a completely fair enough opinion if you’d actually tried it properly.(imo)

I’ve played Halo 3 4 player online co-op from start to finish and it’s great fun.

I’ve also played Gears of War start to finish on co-op and drop-in/drop-out Co-op (either helping someone out or vice versa) and that too adds a completely new dimension to a shooter.

I wasn’t explicitly going on about online co-op, but your points a good one. Maybe I’ll have to give it a go somehow. Not with KZ2 tho :-D

  18. No_PUDding said:

I think the reason was that it would cause teleportation.

I think if the game had an install it could do Co-op. it’s all about the checkpoitns, I am guessing. So it’s sucks.

    Maybe the next game eh?

cry baby xbots taking the piss at a ps3 exclusive for any reason.cry me a river and stfu. stop trying to pass your own preferences to everyone else as a negative thing.many people don’t care about online co-op.Just because you’re to pussy to beat the game alone doesn’t mean everyone is too.once you “PLAY” the game i’m sure you wont even notice. You’ll be too stunned from the graphics and game play to care.

I couldn’t care less about CoOp!
Played “Halo 3″ and “Gears of War” CoOp, but was bored soon. I very much preferred the single-player experiences of those two games. So, CoOp is definitely not my cup of tea!
My guess is that a lot of gamers just play CoOp because they are achievement-hunters/whores who want the reach 100% completion scores.

You’d have been better off with the doorknob.
