Eurogamer Killzone 2 review – it’s a 9 [Update]

killzone2a6.jpg

Update: IGN’s given it 9.4.

Update 2: More scores:

Eurogamer’s gone live with its Killzone 2 review, giving the game 9/10.

Snip:

This is a methodical shooter that makes few concessions to those not already interested in its single-minded approach to cover-based military action. I’ve compared it to Rainbow Six in the past, but it also calls to mind F.E.A.R, another tough tactical effort that was often misunderstood by those expecting a frag-happy spook hunt. Killzone 2 is a taut and muscular game, a shooter that gives back more than you put in, provided you have the intestinal fortitude. It may take its time revealing its true depths and pleasures, but the journey is well worth taking. Between Killzone 2′s unforgiving grit and Resistance 2′s alien-bursting excess, the PS3 finally has both ends of the shooter spectrum covered in grand style.

We’ll bring you more scores as they come up. Game’s out later this month.

    Am not reading any reviews….

Major blackout. Do not want to see the Gamersyde vids either.

    #3 6 years ago
  4. phatb0y

One of the better reviews I’ve seen for it.

Everything else I’ve read has been a little too gushing to be taken seriously.

9 is good. And its guaranteed one hell of a tardstorm in the comments section.

    Go go gadget pre-order!

IGN review? Not such an exclusive deal EG had then…

    #5 6 years ago
  6. Psychotext

There’s loads of reviews showing up for it… so no, it doesn’t appear to be an EG exclusive.

    #6 6 years ago
  7. Slyjss

It seems Eurogamer had the exclusive in UK, Eurogamer in the USA, and no restrictions in the rest of the world. For example, in Spain a lot of webs have reviewed it, including Eurogamer.es: http://www.eurogamer.es/articles/killzone-2-analisis-review_1

    #7 6 years ago
  8. Slyjss

Sorry, I meant IGN in the USA

    #8 6 years ago
  9. patlike

Ja. It was regional exclusives, apparently.

  10. Syrok

Heh, regional exclusives on the world wide web. Fantastique idea! ^^

    #10 6 years ago
  11. Gekidami

Technically that means that Sony can ask any other site in those ‘regions’ to take down their reviews till feb 2nd. its a decent deal they cut really.

  12. fearmonkey

Glad to see it getting good scores. The dev must have been under alot of pressure to deliver an awesome game, and i’m glad they achieved it.
If I had a PS3, which I may get one day, I’d like to try it.
Didn’t read the reviews, but is it a 1080p game?

  15. Michael O'Connor

How the hell does one take a review seriously when it was a paid for exclusive? Do they actually think people are they stupid?

What next, honest reviews in “official” format magazines?

I’ll wait until someone not paid by the publishers to review it.

    #15 6 years ago
  16. Syrok

    @Tim: I still don’t care. :)

What’s your take Pat? You must have code now. (And the suitcase of used twenties, obviously.)

  19. patlike

I still haven’t played it, to be honest. I spoke to Tom earlier and he said he’d played through half of it and couldn’t fault anything Dan said in the EG review. From what I saw at EE it looked technically outstanding. If everyone says “9″ I have no reason to doubt them, frankly.

    #19 6 years ago
  20. patlike

    Just added some more.

  21. No_PUDding

    Fuckign spoilers everywhere :( :( :(

I’d dock a point for Sony’s shtting amrketing showming me the game before I play it.

    Well… Not really I guess.

    #21 6 years ago
  22. Redh3lix

@ Fearmonkey “but is it a 1080p game?”

Apparently it “upscales” the game (if on an HD TV) to 1080. 1080 isn’t the games natural resolution though as far as I know.

The beta was fan-dabby-dozy, so I suspect the full game will be fantastic.

    #22 6 years ago
  23. Psychotext

Yeah, they advise 720p but it is capable of upscaling internally so you don’t have to rely on whatever shitty scaler is in your TV.

    #23 6 years ago
  24. Retroid

I can’t believe anyone was actually thinking this would be a 1080p game! :D

    Considering pre-ordering this now.

It is also good for 1080i, apparently.

    #26 6 years ago
  27. Whizzo

I can’t believe anyone was actually thinking this would be a 1080p game! You mean there’s not another 256 meg of video RAM on the BR? How lame! ;-)

It was easily the most impressive thing being played at EG Expo, I’d like to have had a go but unsurprisingly it was rather popular.

There is quite a commotion going on in the Norwegian game community after the country’s biggest gaming site Gamer.no posted a rather negative 6/10 review of Killzone 2 yesterday morning.

It contained obvious flame-bait phrases like:
Title of the review: “The false prophet”

“Playstations long expected trump card is finally out of the sleeve, and it’s rather a jack than an ace.”

“To aquire a contender against Microsofts Master Chief has long been a high priority with the Japanese Giant (Sony), well, at least amongst the screaming coir who call themselves Sony-fans.”

“It holds a high star in the church, and I will soon curse from the pulpit infront of the Playstation-community”

Well, those sentences pretty much sets the standard for the rest of the review, which contains more mentions of Halo 3 and Gears of War than Killzone 2 itself…

But that’s not the end of the story. An hour after this review was posted, Edda Media, the media house which owned Gamer.no, kicked the site prematurely out of the network.
(It was announced the day before that they would separate from the network, but continue to be hosted by Edda Media as long as next week, but now Gamer.no is no more. They were separated because of a seemingly unrelated event, but no details were given.)

I can’t imagine what would happen if IGN or Eurogamer posted a review like that! :D

The original review in Norwegian can be found here:

At this point, getting 9′s and 10′s is kinda expected for KZ2, but originally I expected it to be a failed attempt at meeting the ’05 trailer — Instead it looks really fucking awesome, do want.
