Eurogamer Killzone 2 review – it’s a 9 [Update]

Thursday, 29th January 2009 17:02 GMT By Patrick Garratt

Update: IGN’s given it 9.4.

Update 2: More scores:

Eurogamer’s gone live with its Killzone 2 review, giving the game 9/10.

This is a methodical shooter that makes few concessions to those not already interested in its single-minded approach to cover-based military action. I’ve compared it to Rainbow Six in the past, but it also calls to mind F.E.A.R, another tough tactical effort that was often misunderstood by those expecting a frag-happy spook hunt. Killzone 2 is a taut and muscular game, a shooter that gives back more than you put in, provided you have the intestinal fortitude. It may take its time revealing its true depths and pleasures, but the journey is well worth taking. Between Killzone 2′s unforgiving grit and Resistance 2′s alien-bursting excess, the PS3 finally has both ends of the shooter spectrum covered in grand style.

We’ll bring you more scores as they come up. Game’s out later this month.

  1. Psychotext

Just finished reading it and I think on the whole Dan was the right man for the job. Great review.

  2. patlike

From what I’ve been told it’s bang on the money. Very much looking forward to playing it.

  3. No_PUDding

    Am not reading any reviews….

Major blackout. Do not want to see the Gamersyde vids either.

    #3 6 years ago
  4. phatb0y

One of the better reviews I’ve seen for it.

Everything else I’ve read has been a little too gushing to be taken seriously.

9 is good. And its guaranteed one hell of a tardstorm in the comments section.

    Go go gadget pre-order!

  5. Gekidami

IGN review? Not such an exclusive deal EG had then…

    #5 6 years ago
  6. Psychotext

There’s loads of reviews showing up for it… so no, it doesn’t appear to be an EG exclusive.

    #6 6 years ago
  7. Slyjss

It seems Eurogamer had the exclusive in UK, Eurogamer in the USA, and no restrictions in the rest of the world. For example, in Spain a lot of webs have reviewed it, including

  8. Slyjss

Sorry, I meant IGN in the USA

    #8 6 years ago
  9. patlike

Ja. It was regional exclusives, apparently.

    #9 6 years ago
  10. Syrok

Heh, regional exclusives on the world wide web. Fantastique idea! ^^

    #10 6 years ago
  11. Gekidami

Technically that means that Sony can ask any other site in those ‘regions’ to take down their reviews till feb 2nd. its a decent deal they cut really.

    #11 6 years ago
  12. fearmonkey

Glad to see it getting good scores. The dev must have been under alot of pressure to deliver an awesome game, and i’m glad they achieved it.
If I had a PS3, which I may get one day, I’d like to try it.
Didn’t read the reviews, but is it a 1080p game?

    #12 6 years ago
  13. TimClark

    Oh, now *everyone* likes it…

    Just added some more scores.

  15. Michael O'Connor

How the hell does one take a review seriously when it was a paid for exclusive? Do they actually think people are they stupid?

What next, honest reviews in “official” format magazines?

I’ll wait until someone not paid by the publishers to review it.

    #15 6 years ago
  16. Syrok

    @Tim: I still don’t care. :)

    #16 6 years ago
  17. TimClark

I should probably have put a concessionary :) in case people read that the wrong way.

    #17 6 years ago
  18. TimClark

    Sigh, too late…

What’s your take Pat? You must have code now. (And the suitcase of used twenties, obviously.)

    #18 6 years ago
  19. patlike

I still haven’t played it, to be honest. I spoke to Tom earlier and he said he’d played through half of it and couldn’t fault anything Dan said in the EG review. From what I saw at EE it looked technically outstanding. If everyone says “9″ I have no reason to doubt them, frankly.

    #19 6 years ago
  20. patlike

    Just added some more.

    #20 6 years ago
  21. No_PUDding

    Fuckign spoilers everywhere :( :( :(

I’d dock a point for Sony’s shtting amrketing showming me the game before I play it.

    Well… Not really I guess.

    #21 6 years ago
  22. Redh3lix

@ Fearmonkey “but is it a 1080p game?”

Apparently it “upscales” the game (if on an HD TV) to 1080. 1080 isn’t the games natural resolution though as far as I know.

The beta was fan-dabby-dozy, so I suspect the full game will be fantastic.

    #22 6 years ago
  23. Psychotext

Yeah, they advise 720p but it is capable of upscaling internally so you don’t have to rely on whatever shitty scaler is in your TV.

    #23 6 years ago
  24. Retroid

I can’t believe anyone was actually thinking this would be a 1080p game! :D

    Considering pre-ordering this now.

    #24 6 years ago
  25. Gamoc

Michael: You’re full of shit. Exclusive and official does not equal biased.

This…is outstanding. I’ll have to get this game.

    #25 6 years ago
  26. No_PUDding

It is also good for 1080i, apparently.

    #26 6 years ago
  27. Whizzo

I can’t believe anyone was actually thinking this would be a 1080p game! You mean there’s not another 256 meg of video RAM on the BR? How lame! ;-)

It was easily the most impressive thing being played at EG Expo, I’d like to have had a go but unsurprisingly it was rather popular.

    #27 6 years ago
  28. Robo_1

I’m counting the days for this one. Loved the first game and the PSP version, I’m really pleased (and relieved) to see Guerilla have delivered.

    #28 6 years ago
  29. Quiiick

Yeah, me too! Loved the first one (despite all the bad press) and will definitely buy Killzone 2.
But I will miss the replays with different characters which made the first Killzone so great.

    #29 6 years ago
  30. Psychotext

I watched the cutscenes from the first game yesterday. Nothing too complicated obviously, but at least I have an idea of what’s supposed to be going on.

    #30 6 years ago
  31. theevilaires

well well well, lookey lookey, what do we have here. i see a lot of beautiful people in this crowd today.over here we have the faithful crowd who never doubted the killzone devs, good evening people.and here we have the “on the fence” people who have to see to believe, nice of you to join us.And omg who is that hiding in the back now pretending to be among the hopefuls…??? why its yours truly, the one and only xbot troll…..______________,give him a round of applause people :P

  32. Psychotext

Don’t do it TEA. See the discussions from today? Yeah, all good natured and well reasoned… until you arrived.

    Which is unsurprising really.

    #32 6 years ago
  33. No_PUDding

Ahhh that’s who you meant by TEA…

Yeah he can be a pain in the ass.

TEA, let me be the PS3 fanboy. I’ve won awards for it you know.

    #34 6 years ago
  35. Psychotext

    #38 6 years ago
  39. theevilaires

so you and the rest of the village people are taking bets on me? i’m flattered but let me guess since you lost you’ll be receiving instead of giving? :P

Cort, the reaso we speak to him is becuase he’s so wildly entertaining.

No Psychotext there is no end. He’s clearly a genius.

Anyway, I just keep on seeing fuckign spoilers for this game. Wish people would keep their footage in their pants, and let me not have to see it.

  50. No_PUDding

Well you know you so much about willy’s, so it’s fair you found it difficult to stay on topic.

We’ll just talk about Killzone 2 while you think about them.

    #50 6 years ago
  51. Psychotext

I’m trying to talk about Killzone 2, but it’s hard not for me to spout my filthy fanboy lies and oppress the harmless PS3 owners here. :(

I’m so green with envy you see, because I’m poor and I can’t afford one. >:(

    #51 6 years ago

  60. Michael O'Connor

“Michael: You’re full of shit. Exclusive and official does not equal biased.”

You’re kidding, right? A review on a site that made contractual deals with the very developers themselves to promote a game is… unbiased?

    #60 6 years ago
  61. DrDamn

The review was done and scored before the exclusive deal was made.

    #61 6 years ago
  62. Gamoc

Michael, you’re paranoid and very untrusting. It saddens me.

Well, I’d usually agree about official soruces, but having played the first Motorstorm extensively… I dunno how it got that score.

OR how Warhawk got it’s score.

But yeah EXCLUSIVE reviews are always dodgy.

There is quite a commotion going on in the Norwegian game community after the country’s biggest gaming site posted a rather negative 6/10 review of Killzone 2 yesterday morning.

It contained obvious flame-bait phrases like:
Title of the review: “The false prophet”

“Playstations long expected trump card is finally out of the sleeve, and it’s rather a jack than an ace.”

“To aquire a contender against Microsofts Master Chief has long been a high priority with the Japanese Giant (Sony), well, at least amongst the screaming coir who call themselves Sony-fans.”

“It holds a high star in the church, and I will soon curse from the pulpit infront of the Playstation-community”

Well, those sentences pretty much sets the standard for the rest of the review, which contains more mentions of Halo 3 and Gears of War than Killzone 2 itself…

But that’s not the end of the story. An hour after this review was posted, Edda Media, the media house which owned, kicked the site prematurely out of the network.
(It was announced the day before that they would separate from the network, but continue to be hosted by Edda Media as long as next week, but now is no more. They were separated because of a seemingly unrelated event, but no details were given.)

I can’t imagine what would happen if IGN or Eurogamer posted a review like that! :D

The original review in Norwegian can be found here:

At this point, getting 9′s and 10′s is kinda expected for KZ2, but originally I expected it to be a failed attempt at meeting the ’05 trailer — Instead it looks really fucking awesome, do want.
