Sony released PSP, but never put enough of a push behind it, says Smackdown CEO

Smack Down Productions CEO, Laurent Benadiba, has told GI that Sony needs to act if it is to stimulate the PSP in Europe.

“I worked for two years on the PSP, as one of the only developers then, and I really believed in the platform at the time,” he said.

“I still believe there’s potential, but it’s like self-confidence – if you trust yourself, maybe others will trust you. If you don’t trust yourself, nobody will trust you.

“I think that’s what’s happened with the PSP – Sony released the product, but they never put enough of a push behind it,” he went on.

“Games, ads, better shelf placement – trying to make an effort. I think it was also released at a time when they were still very focused on the PlayStation 3, trying to get it out of the door, that they slightly forgot about it.”

He’s probably right.

It’s a great machine – and I love the podcast / RSS stuff they added – but the selection of games is woeful atm.

It really needs a better analogue input and two of them as well.

I like my PSP but as I drive to work and rarely use trains/planes I don’t use it that much and there’s few compelling titles to make me game on my PSP at home rather than on PC or a regular console instead.

Remote Play with the PS3 is nifty, but the only thing I’ve got on the PS3 which uses it is the Pixeljunk Eden demo. Oh, and LifeWithPlaystation :/

I’m with Whizzo, the thing holding the PSP back is really just the controls. Sony needs to keep the hardware the same and re-evaluate the input method.

I also really disagree with what that bloke said about confidence, at least from a personal perspective.

Overconfident people I strongly distrust: Bush was far too confident for his own good, and I couldn’t stand him.

People who second-guess themselves a lot I do trust because it means they’re being considerate, and viewing things from every angle. They don’t jump rashly and stupidly into a decision without bothering to think it over properly first, they don’t trust themselves to make the right decision immediately without any rational thought.

It’s my opinion as well that only a fool is the reverse of the above, if an overconfident person jumps off a cliff believing they can fly, anyone who follows them deserves the same ruddy fate! This is how cults work.

I’d never heard of SmackDown Productions until this article appeared.. :S

What does that say, apart from they’ve got a good way of getting the press to talk about them?

Here’s their title line-up, btw: http://smackdownproductions.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=2&Itemid=36

i agree with dean. they need to make better smackDown games then talk about the psp, which is probably their biggest money maker platform wise. It sounds like this,” hey sony do a better job selling the psp in europe which are the largest fans of the wwe so we can all get nice bonuses this year”

There was LOADS of marketing behind the PSP. If the machine has a problem it isn’t that.
