Greenberg feels fortunate 360 is half the price of PS3, expects continued momentum in 2009
Xbox 360 director of product management, Aaron Greenberg has told videogaming247 that he expects 360 sales to continue their momentum in 2009 as this is the company’s first full year “at mass market pricing.”
He also told us that he feels fortunate Microsoft can offer Xbox 360 at half the price of PS3 and less than Nintendo Wii on a global scale.
“We are very excited about 2009 especially coming off the largest year in the history of our business in 2008,” said Greenberg to VG247 this morning. “We expect to see continued momentum in 2009 with our first full year at mass market pricing.”
“Similar to the approach we have taken in prior years, we don’t reveal our plans for the full year on January 1st and like to surprise consumers with announcements closer to when the products are available for release.
“But with that said, we have a lot for Xbox 360 owners to be excited about this spring including stuff like Halo Wars, Xbox LIVE Primetime, Resident Evil 5, GTA IV: The Lost and Damned, Street Fighter IV, and Star Ocean: The Last Hope just to name a few,” he added.
“This of course does not include our leading high definition entertainment library that continues to grow with new releases every week or our exclusive all-you-can-eat Netflix offering in the US with more than 12,000 instant watch movies and TV shows.”
Michael Pachter told VG247 last week that he expects Microsoft to reduce the price of the 360 even further in 2009. We asked Aaron Greenberg if he could echo that sentiment:
“Regarding another price cut, we have nothing to announce at this time and feel fortunate that we are able to offer consumers the Xbox 360 at half the price of the PS3 and even less than the Wii on a global basis.”

I’m sure that he didn’t exactly go out of his way to email VG247 just because he felt like it.

Oh dear god this man just can’t keep his fat mouth shut, can he?
Why isn’t he so willing to share information when asked the question “What percentage of that 28 million is RRoD replacements?”.

Cort: There would be some, but only those machines replaced by retailers would count in the shipped figures. Machines replaced by MS would not.

I’m sure that’s right, but why do MS consistently refuse to answer the question?

Microsoft will never ever publish the failure rate of the 360. It would be too embarrassing to reveal that this piece of hardware has by far the highest failure rate EVER in the entire history of mass-market electronics.

It amuses me that people still go on about the RRoD, about a year and a half since it (the design flaws in the original boards) got addressed.

@Retroid,
One of the guys who works for me has had two die since the summer (one, bought in September, died within two months). Addressed? My arse.

I’ve bought two in the last year, I even dropped one of them on the day after I bought it, yet they hum away nicely.
(Sold my replaced-motherboard refurb to a mate, and that’s working fine too).
There are always going to be hardware failures, sadly. I know two people personally who’ve had PS3s die on them but I don’t go on about that

Things break.
(Seriously though, on the whole the issue was addressed with the Falcon revision. Hardly any have failed compared to the original models.)

@Retroid,
No-one much goes on about that because you cannot reasonably compare 360 failure rates to PS3 failure rates. Probably equates to about 10,000:1.
As for the so-called YLOD that some do love to bring up every now and then, 99.5% can be cured by switching off your PS3, waiting thirty minutes, then switching it on again. It should be called YLOTI(TBTDOOTV)*.

i never saw a ylod in person but i have seen many many many RRoD in person. Also you see them at game conventions. You’re telling me M$ isn’t ashamed that their hardware is shit. NO! cause you know why its so cheap now they know when it craps out you’ll go buy a new one and they can say hey look we sold another shitbox

Ahh… I figured there was an angle here. I assume you’re saying that’s why they’ve sold so much more than the PS3? I thought last week the reason was price?

you assume too much thats why you are always wrong and if you read post you can put fail rate and cheap hardware together and it obviously makes decent sales from dumb consumers like yourself. and i thought we been through that, 360=200 ps3=400 they both made the same amount of money despite 360 doubling the consoles sold. Do your math kid

Taking a similar amount of cash at the tills isn’t the same as making the same amount of money.

You’ve only got to look at the profit figures to see that. That aside…
SticKboy – What actually happened is that there’s only 1m 360 owners but they’ve all bought the console 28 times because of RRoD. They’ve also bought Halo 3 8 times each (possibly because of the discs getting scratched) and Gears of War 5 times each.

I’m gonna go off on a limb and say that replacement consoles sent by Microsoft through the mail to cover the RROD warranty don’t count as “sold”.
I’m sure there’s a number of people who are both rich and stupid who would have thrown good money after bad after their console broke in the first year when there was no warranty, but I don’t think that adds up to a significant slice of the 28 million.

The real question Sony should ask, is why people that have recieved RROD’s haven’t switched to Sony? While some have, the majority has not.
That’s not a slam against the PS3, just a question I’ve wondered myself.
I’ve owned 3 Xbox 360′s, had one RROD, replaced by MS, which I sold off, recieved one as a gift which I still have, and bought an elite as my main system.
My reason for not buying a PS3 has been cost, Blu-ray isn’t really needed as I’m not a huge movie person, and not many games on the PS3 have interested me. I’m a serious RPG fan, more RPGs on 360 and PC.

@Psychotext,
Come on, the YLoD means death in only about 5% of occurences (it is usually cured by letting the console cool down and clearing the vents of dust or improving air circulation) and it probably happens to something like one in ten thousand PS3s, if that.
Yes it happens, but almost statistaclly too small to warrant mention.

how much did you pay for your first 360? and how much did you pay for your elite? the ps3 is 400 now right?… and you say price is the reason….chyea.
at the two gay birds who love adding each other in their comments you dumb idiots know nothing of consumer thoughts on purchasing things in the states because 1. your mothers buy your games and consoles and 2 you’re stupid euros so there you go..and i would like to add that i’m sorry if i bust your balls to bad stickboy, you can change your name back to morris

I bought my first 360 for $399 during the first month that they were available, sold it after I got it back from RROD, and bought the elite for $400. I got the other unit as a free gift.
The reason for the PS3 is price, it would be a second console, and as a RPG fan, wouldn’t be my primary unit unless that changes.
$400 would be worth it for a PS3 if I was a movie buff, and the media player is better than the 360 i hear.
The one thing that the PS3 has that the 360 doesnt right now is the web browser, and now with the ability to play youtube on it, i’m even more interested.
I also have to mention that i went through 3 PS2′s and 3 xbox’s, while i have had only one Dreamcast, one PS1,One Saturn, one 3DO, one SNES, and One Colecovision.

you make no sense stfu from now on. you paid 400 for everything else but “now” your reason for not getting a ps3 is because you’re an rpg fan…. give me a break little 14 year old.Also the media capabilities are better so drop the “i hear” bit.At 400 the xbox couldn’t do most of the things a ps3 could do at 600 and still some things at 200.I don’t care what systems you had because it doesn’t mean shit,guess what an 8 year old can have the same thing if he went to a flee market.

Little note:
@fearmonkey
YouTube was always able to be accessed on the PS3. It’s just that now, it’s optimized for it. I prefer normal YouTube over YouTube TV though. Even though, the TV version is faster, it doesn’t have comments yet, and the video is sharp, but shit(tier) quality.
Oh and theevilaires, calm that ass.
