Ubisoft gets a Brazilian

Ubisoft's bought "Brazil’s longest-standing independent video game developer," Southlogic Studios.

The 20-strong studio's a Jack of all trades, performing both title and outsourcing functions. It most recently coded indubitable DS powerhouse, Imagine: Wedding Designer.

"We have been delighted with our collaboration with Ubisoft on their Imagine line of games,” said Southlogic founder Christian Lykawka.

UBISOFT® EXPANDS BRAZILIAN OPERATIONS

LONDON, UK – 20 January 2009 – Today, Ubisoft announced that it has acquired Brazil’s longest-standing independent video game developer, Southlogic Studios®.

Established in 1996 in Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul), Southlogic’s team of around 20 developers has created titles for PC, handheld and home consoles, as well as provided art outsourcing and porting services. The studio has worked for various European, Japanese and American publishers and most recently developed Imagine®: Wedding Designer on Nintendo DS™ for Ubisoft.

"As Brazil’s most experienced and premier development studio, Southlogic has proven its agility in adapting to new technologies and genres on a variety of platforms," declared Christine Burgess-Quémard, executive director of worldwide studios at Ubisoft. "This acquisition reinforces our commitment to attracting talent in South America, and Brazil in particular, further boosting the group’s ambitious expansion plans."

The studio will be integrated into Ubisoft Sao Paulo, with Southlogic management reporting to Bertrand Chaverot, managing director of Ubisoft’s Brazilian studio. It will keep its facilities in Porto Alegre, operating as a satellite office.
