Analyst: Sony’s ten year plan is about continued internal development, not just time on the market

Screen Digest analyst Ed Barton has said that Sony’s ten year PS3 plan isn’t about how long the console will be around for, it’s to do with how long the company will continue to invest in the machine and give consumers a reason to buy it.

“When Sony talks about the PS3’s lifecycle, they’re not simply referring to how long the console stays on the market, but also how long Sony’s internal development teams are producing reasons for people to carry on buying it,” he told Edge.

“Seven years into the PS2’s lifecycle and Sony dropped a little-known game called God of War 2 on the Western market. That game, in my opinion, stands up pretty well to a lot of current generation games.

“Thinking about the level of investment games like God of War 2 required, and looking at how well Sony has supported the PS2 in the latter years of its lifecycle, I think the company has a pretty good record in that sense.”

Look, they’re the underdog now – you’re supposed to root for them!

Well… I was still interested in and playing PS2 games until the very end of last year. In fact, I’m still planning on picking up Persona 4.

    Bleh.

“the company has a pretty good record in that sense”?

what about PS1? they basically ditched it as soon as PS2 was out.

Actually… looking at Metacritic there’s only one Sony developed game for the PS2 released since the start of 2008 which has scored 80% or higher.

    MLB 08: The Show

    Superb first party support. ;)

God of War 2 was pretty much Sony’s PS2 swan-song. And it was delayed quite a long time too, which probably explains why it arrived so late in the day. Not to take away from the game itself, though – it was really very good indeed.

Are they really surprised that Sony would provide support for PS2? It’s like being surprised that someone would feed a goose that lays golden eggs for however long it should happen to lay those eggs.

Except in this case the goose is now infirm and infertile, yet Sony keep propping it up to help pay for their stupid fat child.

They didn’t ditch the PS1 as soon as the PS2 came out. Games were still being made for it up to a few years ago.

Yes, and they were all shit after the PS2 came out. :-D

Maybe we have different definitions of ditched, then. ;-)

Just did the same metacritic search on the PS1. After the start of 2000 (PS’s 6th year) Sony only developed one game for the console which rated 80% or more.

    Spyro: Year of the Dragon

So yeah, they pretty much did ditch it. As with the PS2 they relied on third party support for the ageing machine.

(and yes, before anyone says it… it’s still better support than MS or Nintendo gave)

I surmise the PS2′s prolonged popularity is in itself a part of Sony’s problem with the PS3. Although the fact that it’s making them money when the PS3 isn’t kind of makes it difficult to warrant shitcanning it. And there was always the chance that those PS2 customers would have gone to Nintendo or Microsoft if they had shut it down early. Tricky situation.

Oh, wait, are we talking about first party support? Should I read the article and other comments before posting? Yes, yes I should.

    Yeah, they ditched it. :-D

With Kaz’s Comments today regarding they are still the industry leader, it seems that they have to place some spin in, or just don’t get it.
It’s those type of comments that make me dislike Sony, and root against them. I wish Kaz would just shut-up so I can like Sony again.
