2K Games: Games industry is recession-proof

2K global president Christoph Hartmann has told MCV that he believes the games industry’s progress will not be halted by the current economic slowdown.

“Traditionally, when the economy does badly, the entertainment market grows,” said Hartmann. “I don’t see why it should be any different this time.

“The recession is coming, but it’s not only about the sad situation of people worrying if they can pay their mortgage – it’s people wondering if they can still afford to spend £500 to go crazy in Ibiza twice a year.”

“People spend less than a tenth of that on a video game that will last for hours in their own home. Cost-wise for a decent amount of hours of entertainment, it’s cheap. Brutally cheap. The recession shouldn’t have too much of an impact,” he adds.

Haven’t we been through this before? Tell that to Free Radical or the other developers made redundant.

“Tell that to Free Radical or the other developers made redundant.”
yeah, because no studios were shut down until this recession.

So DaMan, are you suggesting that if we get a glut of studios going down over the next year or so, that it’s just business as usual?

I think the more important criteria here is whether the revenue of the games industry drops.

No, of course it’s not something new.

But, on the other hand, no one can feel safe during this recession (however serious or make-belief it is) and the games industry is no different. Especially since some employers will see this period as an opportunity to minimize their running costs, even if they didn’t need to.

No one can predict how this will play out in the end. Repeating this “recession-proof” mantra over and over again doesn’t make it any less silly.

I am yet to see this ‘glut’.

and I would say most of the studios that went down would do that anyway, with or without the help of recession.

I am sick of these stupid ‘X says games industry is recession-proof’ articles, we don’t care, go away. It’s clearly not, look at the developers going out of business.

So why aren’t the publishers going out of business? OK, so there’s Midway – architects of their own demise… but who else? No-one.

The reason why developers are going under is less about the recession, and more about the huge cost of development on HD platforms.

Most economics-savvy developers saw the way the wind was blowing and made provision for it. It’s the reason why Bizarre Creations is still around, for starters.
