Included in a press release issued yesterday detailing Gamestop’s Christmas sales surge and share hike, company chief executive Daniel DeMatteo described Sony’s PlayStation 3 as a “great machine” but added that he felt it was a little too pricey for the current economic climate.
From the release:
DeMatteo called Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 3 a “great machine,” but said it is just a bit pricey for the current economic environment. The cheapest Xbox 360, which comes without a hard drive, costs $200 and the Wii is $250. Sony Corp.’s 80-gigabyte PlayStation 3 console, which includes a Blu-ray player, sells for $400.
Sony issued a statement yesterday essentially saying that PS3 is better value for money than any of its competitors.

Better value for money?? That’s a laugh when Sony sell a second controller for £40 bloody quid. Now that really *is* a rip-off!!

Good point – a bit like the £45 for a 360 pad + play-and-charge kit or the £45 for the Wii remote + nunchuck…

Yeah, cos you can’t use the 360 joypad without a play and charge kit, can you…?

You don’t need one play and charge kit per pad, either.

Ok then, say a 360 pad + 2 rechargeable batteries and a charger instead – about £40? – unless you want to continue buying batteries which would work out a lot more in the long run.
My point being that all three consoles now have controllers that cost a significant (similar) amount and the first post was somewhat silly!

All the controllers are a rip off. Though actual price you can get them for differs significantly from RRP. You can get a 360 controller for £23, a PS3 controller for £30 and the Wii remote / nunchuck for £38.
Still pretty crappy though… especially the Wii prices.

I got my X360 controller for £20, so even with a play & charge it works out cheaper than a Dual-Shock 3

I just use a wired pad. It’s that simple.

I already had a charger and several sets of batteries – even more people have these kinjds of things thanks to digital cameras and the like. My battery charger is also USB, so I can charge spare sets while I’m gaming
Pads, in general, do still need to be cheaper in general though.

Plus, you need to add an HDMI cable to get the most out of it.
