One could just as easily say that “Everyone needs wi-fi!”, but that doesn’t make it a fact.

It’s weasel wording to imply that your opinion is that of the majority, when it could just as easily be the other way around. Without researching the matter, you can’t know either way whether wi-fi is or is not an aid to most people.

We can only say what -we- use, which is what I did, I said that I liked wi-fi, and didn’t like having loads of leads trailing around. That was a valid opinion, because I was speaking of myself and not for a nebulous group of imaginary people.

Agreed, it was a really lopsided list and wasn’t designed to prove anything, just to make the PS3 look good. A list could be designed like that for any console, it’s just cheap marketing.

Wifi is great but I use it for mobiles devices (like the ePC I’m using to type this on).

My house is running on one Internet transmission lead–the one that goes into my router. My computers, my consoles, and my had-helds can all magically access the Internet from there, without the need of trailing an annoying little wire into each one. That gives me the freedom of putting things where I like in my house.

So that was a plus point for both the Wii and the PS3.

Though, I would note that were the tables turned and it was Microsoft making the claims about cheapest console, the reactions would have been quite a bit different. So I do feel for Sony on that front, but they dug their own hole with this one and I’m not even going to bloody try and defend them.

The only thing I’ll say is that I did like the PS3 having built in Wi-Fi capabilities (like the Wii did). Having a large bunch of ethernet wires trailing out from one’s entertainment centre is so 2004!

It’s one of the only things keeping the console back, and perhaps more to the point of profitability, the lineup too.

Yes the table has faults, but they do not outweigh the merits presented in the argument. That console price is more than the buy-in. Do you not think MS has figured they make back the lose they take for 360 by subscriptions?

Sony should wait for MS to launch their next system in 2 years then launch something and charge online premium subscription for $20 a year to reduce the cost. Plus their next system will use two cells, and will be cheaper out of the box than 720 or whatever.

@g00nerz – It would depend on how many consumers likely to want to buy SingStar Abba would be willing to shell out £300 for a PS3 as well if they didn’t have one. If there isn’t a significant number of people to leverage it’s not worth the marketing spend probably.

That said, I saw very little for LittleBigPlanet and/or Resistance over Xmas so your point’s valid. I remember an LBP ad in the cinema, that’s it. It followed a set of Gears, Lips & Fable ads to boot! The missus weren’t too impressed

As for the actual headline story here, Sony really need to get their advertising in order, not play about with stupid emails. Here in the UK I rarely see anything advertising PS3, whereas every 5 minutes there is a 360 advert.

A great example is Singstar Abba PS3. The whole Mamma Mia thing was MASSIVE. It’s the highest selling DVD ever in the UK. Did Sony advertise the fuck out of Singstar Abba like they should have? Did they fuck. Millions of potential sales missed.

But touting Blu-Ray is ridiculous.

Just smacks of desperation and window dressing from a company who perhaps only now are starting to realise the extent of their bungling.

But that’s really not the issue here. The issue for me is rather than talk up the good things about the PS3 or it’s software line up for this year, some marketing wag thought it was a good idea to put out this daft chart which won’t fool 99% of the people likely to see it.

That you need to invest more than the initial price of the box to enjoy the “full” Xbox 360 experience is obvious. Microsoft obviously deemed it more important to give people a choice. If you’re not interested in Blu-Ray, online connectivity or HD gaming Sony don’t give people any. Funnily enough, that represents a significant number of people who want to buy a games console.

Quite why it’s a good idea to bring the focus back on the PS3 price I’ve no idea.

The worst thing is that in electrical stores they will insist you need these hugely expensive cables too. The fuckers.

Cables can make a big difference to analog signals like SCART though. RGB fully wired, insulated etc can improve the picture a lot, but HDMI, hell no.

Anybody who buys an expensive HDMI cable over a cheap one is an idiot. HDMI cables are digital. No amount of gold is going to make a digital signal better than it already is. Digital signal goes in one end and out the other exactly the same.

The only way you may need to pay more for a HDMI cable is when you need a really long cable, say 10 metres because of signal degradation.

The only fair comparrision should be what is the minimum you have to spend to play games? Everything else is an extra.

Arcade wins, followed by the Premium, then the Wii, then the Elite, then the PS3.

Unless you’re doing a value for money thing of course, in which once again it’s entirly subjective to you. For me a Blu-Ray player isn’t worth £10. To the next guy it’s a fantastic addition to his PS3 and worth paying the extra £100 for.

This is a very important point in all of this.
