Sony promises “ten years of value” with PlayStation 3
In a statement issued last night entitled, “Keeping Gaming and Entertainment Simple”, SCEA has said that with PlayStation 3 you get “ten years of value with a future-proof system via firmware updates that offer new services and features.”
Without wishing to leave anyone in any doubt as to whether Sony was addressing its competitors in terms with the above proclamation, Sony also released a price and feature breakdown table (below) proving that very point.
If that wasn’t clear enough that the gloves were well and truly off then…well….read below:
“The Xbox 360 requires additional money, multiple upgrades and additional external devices, putting a burden on the wallet and adds clutter to the entertainment center.
“And the Wii’s lack of enhanced features comes at the expense of a comprehensive entertainment solution.
“So as PS3 continues to evolve without the need for additional parts or expenses, expect the competition to continue peddling add-ons in an effort to keep up with the Jones’.” (Sony’s emphasis)
Thanks, Edge.

@Retroid
Fair point pal.
“I have a dream that we will one day live in a nation where we will not be judged by our choice of games console but by the content of our gaming skillz. I have a dream that one day little xbox Timmy and playstation Johnny will be able to co-exist and play in harmony. A beautiful symphony of console brotherhood. I have a dream today. “

This is all rather idiotic on Sony’s part, isn’t it? How many people are going to see this that aren’t informed of the truth of the matter?
Though, I would note that were the tables turned and it was Microsoft making the claims about cheapest console, the reactions would have been quite a bit different. So I do feel for Sony on that front, but they dug their own hole with this one and I’m not even going to bloody try and defend them.
The only thing I’ll say is that I did like the PS3 having built in Wi-Fi capabilities (like the Wii did). Having a large bunch of ethernet wires trailing out from one’s entertainment centre is so 2004!

Yeah, glad about that too, and not having to pay up for it, or go without online as most of my friends do.

Which is what happens if a console is too far away from the router to make use of an ethernet cable, yep.
My house is running on one Internet transmission lead–the one that goes into my router. My computers, my consoles, and my had-helds can all magically access the Internet from there, without the need of trailing an annoying little wire into each one. That gives me the freedom of putting things where I like in my house.
So that was a plus point for both the Wii and the PS3.

I have an ethernet cable running up the side of my stairs, alongside the phone cable. It runs to a switch and I plug everything in my den into that.
I don’t have a maze of cables and my connections are rock-solid
Wifi is great but I use it for mobiles devices (like the ePC I’m using to type this on).

I’m always amused when I see the comparisons for
the hardware price and features between the PS3 and the 360.
Not everyone needs Wifi (i don’t), and not everyone
wants a huge hard drive.
The PS3 is a great media device and in that it blows
away the 360, but as a straight gaming system, most don’t
need the wifi, the blu-ray, the big HD, HDMI or even Xbox live.
I know plenty of Xbox owners with silver accounts.

Plus, they really should add the price of an HDMI cable to that list.

“Not everyone needs Wifi”
One could just as easily say that “Everyone needs wi-fi!”, but that doesn’t make it a fact.
It’s weasel wording to imply that your opinion is that of the majority, when it could just as easily be the other way around. Without researching the matter, you can’t know either way whether wi-fi is or is not an aid to most people.
We can only say what -we- use, which is what I did, I said that I liked wi-fi, and didn’t like having loads of leads trailing around. That was a valid opinion, because I was speaking of myself and not for a nebulous group of imaginary people.
Gah!
Damn it, Internet, stop making me want to debate!
“Plus, they really should add the price of an HDMI cable to that list.”
Agreed, it was a really lopsided list and wasn’t designed to prove anything, just to make the PS3 look good. A list could be designed like that for any console, it’s just cheap marketing.

I suppose you sit on your ass in your mother’s house waiting for these articles to be posted so you can complain about the article whilst being 20x as annoying as the people that argue about the consoles?

I am absolutely certain that the PS3 vs 360 vs Wii argument isn’t as old as my grandmother. And I never said you said anyone sit in their mother’s house, did I?
Seriously, you’re more annoying than the fanboy wars, shut up.
