Variety critics list their top 10 games from ´08

Variety’s videogame critics have put together their top games of 2008 together with two games they found to be a let down, and two games they thought were overrated.

The lists show quite a bit of ‘variety’ and there are a few surprises in there too.

Read the lists through the link.

Well, that just goes to prove that ‘best of’ lists mean absolutely nothing.

Seeing Far Cry 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 at no. 1 in any list is enough to immediately remove their credibility for me. Sure, they were good games, but no. 1? Really? Driving a shitty yellow Car around and doing repetitious missions, or watching a movie with tiny bits of gameplay interspersed between does not strike me as no. 1 material. And this is from someone who likes and has defended MGS 4, too.

There was only one mention of World of Goo as well, which was critically acclaimed across the board. It seems that aside from one of them, the rest were “INDIEWUT?”, which doesn’t exactly appeal to me when I think of informed games journalists.

Honestly, I think Edge did it better.

I like the man who put Saints Row 2 in second place, oh yes.
