2008 “pivotal” for PlayStation, “best software line-up in the industry,” says SCEA VP
In a statement issued last night, SCEA vice president Ian Jackson said 2008 was “pivotal” to the PlayStation brand and that PS3 had the “best software line-up in the industry”.
“We’ve had a solid holiday season and have delivered consistent growth throughout this year,” said Jackson. “Two thousand eight was a pivotal year for PlayStation with the best software line up in the industry, a dramatic expansion of PlayStation Network including the launches of the video delivery service and the beta of the PlayStation Home.”
“Early internal data points to an increase of more than 130 percent of PS3 hardware sales for the holiday season–since Black Friday–and we’re also seeing a growth of nearly 40 percent in total PS3 hardware sales for the calendar year.
“We remain confident this momentum will continue into the new year.”

Metacritic backs him up too. Yeah, you can say what you want about PS3, but it’s delivering on the games front.

Not that I’m saying you’re wrong in your opinion (because it’s an opinion and therefore just as valid as anything I would say), but you can’t really quote Metacritic data as proof of anything. You can very easily manipulate Metacritic search criteria to show pretty much anything you want.
For instance, here’s a search for all 360, PS3 and Wii games with scores over 90, which the 360 easily wins.
Each and every company will claim they have the ‘best line-up’. Given that they all say the same thing, I have to wonder why any of them bother saying it at all. Surely nobody was ever swayed into buying one machine over another just because a company rep said it was ‘best’?

I honestly preferred Sony when they were more quiet, meek, and not playing the role of The Grand Spindoctor. They left that to Microsoft and looked all the better for it.
It’s not advertising, so I do wonder where making claims like this gets them. I agree with Blerk in that it’s an opinion, but I think the chap went about it the wrong way entirely.
He should’ve said; “We have a great line-up of innovative and quality games!”
That wouldn’t have been disputable, as Robo_1 pointed out.

Early on in the PS3′s life they weren’t going on about how they had the greatest games because they knew they had a rocky start. It was oddly pleasant to not have Sony piping up every five minutes in the way that Microsoft and Co. were.
In fact, they still don’t pipe up often enough to grate on my nerves–but if for an ideal World, it’d be nice if they didn’t at all.

Oh yeah, don’t get me wrong, it’s all subjective in the grand scheme of things, but given that some publishers actually award bonuses on metacritic scores, they do carry a fair amount of weight in the industry.
I assume they’re basing their “best lineup” quote on a mixture of hot air and the fact that they have had the most 80+ scoring games in ’08., and it’s not an unreasonable thing to make a fuss of really, given the position they’re in with PS3 nowadays.

@Esha – All I remember from Sony is the comment that the HD gaming era doesnt start until we say it does, the Xbox 360 is Xbox 1.5, and that the Xbox isnt really competing with the PS3, its competing with the PS2. Not to mention all the stupid Kuturagi comments (All games at 120fps, the PS3 is probably too cheap, etc etc.)
The were never meek, always the arrogant spin doctors, they could do no wrong.
I’m glad to see them humbled, and I hope they keep being
humbled.
Those Neilson surveys were entertaining werent they,
with most other systems more getting gametime than PS3.

No. I’m not going to do that any more.
I’m a bit tired of the back and forth, the constant rebuttals, and having to feel cranky after having caught the irritable Internet man virus from someone else.
I’ll leave you to think what you want fearmonkey, it was only an opinion, eh?
Besides, these days I’ve leaned to back the PC. It’s a platform where I know I won’t be shamed by mouthy representatives or potty-mouthed fanboys. Plus, the PC has the indie scene, which is pretty much where the visionaries gather (World of Goo and Crayon Physics et al).
I’m just going to take a step back from debating for the PS3 this year, I just don’t want to get involved in it too much. It has some defenders who do a much better job of it than I ever did, anyway.

Haha, best software line up my ass. What an absolute fat crock of shit. PS3 has how many exclusive titles that got great ratings all across the board? I can only think of two but feel free to refresh my memory.

In my opinion LBP beats anything released since Zelda 64.

Well yeah, lets just say that with Pixeljunk Eden, WipeoutHD, MGS4, LBP, VC and Motorstorm, it hasn’t been a crap year.
Oh don’t forget Haze……
But seriously, it’s kept me WAY busier than in 2007. And the d/l games are superb. Wipeout has consumed my life this year, in a way that Fallout 3 strangely didn’t.
