Reeves: “You don’t grow the market by putting out shoddy machines”

davidreevesa.jpg

SCEE president David Reeves has told MCV that substandard hardware will do nothing to grow the games market.

“We also grow the market through new products – some work, some don’t, that’s just the Sony way,” he said.

“And on that point, another thing we have committed to for supporting market growth is putting out quality hardware – you don’t grow the market by putting out shoddy machines.

“So we try to make sure that PS3s have a failure rate of just two to three per cent, which is very low by industry standards.”

Take that, Microsoft.

Thanks, Kotaku.

nowhere was the xbox 360 mentioned. i know the intrawebs knows what sony is talking about but it isn’t really an attack on microsoft unless you pay attention to gaming news. a lot of people don’t know about rrod.

Yep, aside from one or two silly outbursts, Sony has been smart enough to keep themselves away from the childish “LOLOLSONY” nonsense that Microsoft (and their supporters) loves to engage in.

This is why I’m glad that we have responsible developers like Media molecule, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog on Sony’s end, so they won’t have to deal with the kind of idiocy that Cliffy “Don’t call me Cliffy B” B enjoys spreading around the Internet.

This is why I’m not ashamed to own a PS3, and I’m not ashamed to own a PC, and i’m not ashamed of owning a Wii, but I am ashamed of my XBox 360. :p I feel inches away from selling the thing so I can feel clean again, sometimes.

Also, Esha – you’re really, really strange. Sony, MS and Nintendo are all as bad as each other and you know it deep down.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. It’s also a bit too late really, the 360′s reliability has been improved so much that it dying isn’t that much of an issue these days. Of course they still die but then so do most things.

I think it’s fair to say that the biggest LOL’ism’ thrown at 360 owners is the RROD, so maybe it’s a little idealistic to attempt to paint a picture of Sony’s “supporters” not mentioning anything on the issue.

Anyway, maybe if Sony had put more pressure on MS about this from the start, they wouldn’t have taken so long to pull their fingers out and get the problem fixed.

I’ve had 4 360s go to Texas for “repair”. The PS3 runs along strong and quiet. I wish I could say the same for the 360…

Sony’s early “PS2″ failure rate was maybe 5%-10% while Microsoft’s “360″ had a failure rate much higher than 50%!

Just in case you ask: No, no one has hard facts for these numbers apart from the 2 companies mentioned above, and they will never share their real data, but I’m quite sure my guess is not too far away from the truth.

When my PS2 went to crap … TWICE … Sony did nothing to make good on their hardware failures, costing me hundreds of dollars. When my 360 went down, all that was required of me was patience.
This is not in defense of 360′s “substandard” hardware. But Sony is no better. Let’s not pretend they are.

Depends on how you look at it, from launch till the PS3 came out (in Europe) i had my PS2(‘s) beak twice aswell, i dont know how many years that was, but i’m sure its better then my 360 count which is at 4 since its launch, not counting the one i have that makes a terrible sound and dosnt play the games it scratched, i ended up buying another one just so i could finish NG2…

lol. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve had

A Gameboy, NES, SNES, 2 N64′s, a GBA, a Gamecube, a PS1, PS2, Xbox and 2 Xbox 360′s, all of which worked pretty perfectly until I either sold them or gave them away.

The ‘worst’ of these was my first (roughly 2 year old) 360 which started showing artifacts on the textures of one game, and when I gave it away after replacing it with an Elite, it still hadn’t RROD’d.

The only console that I can say totally died on me was a DS, which just refused to charge even though it wasn’t that old.

Maybe it’s just me, or maybe other people just don’t take care of their property well enough…

Everything I’ve owned console wise has never really broken down. The only machine I’ve had serious problems with is the 360. Since getting one at launch I’ve gone through 5 of the bastards and hoping the 6th one will keep going now.

Least with Sony, if it does break and they arrange a repair they swap over your console at the door unlike the MS method of taking it away for 4 weeks and then send it back hoping it won’t break again.

My PS3 broke in sometime around January or something, it was a 60gb and I just took it back and traded it for a 40gb (and CoD4). I don’t regret the decision too much, I didn’t play PS2 games too much on it anyway, so…

I got a PS2 at launch and never had any problems with it. I traded it in when I was getting my PS3, a year and 2 months ago.

Amusing that he doesn’t recall the early days of the PS2. Specifically the cheap-arsed DVD drives, like the one in my original fatty model. Which broke.

That’s completely different to ths Xbox 360 though. Sony were not aware of the problem beforehand and it was nowhere near as wide spread.

Bad enough to lose a class action court case over… and they were happy enough to charge people for the fix up until that point. Much like the RRoD there was plenty of advice on the internet about how to fix it too.

But anyway, it’s all academic now. They sorted the PS2s on the whole, and they’ve sorted the 360s on the whole.

just you comparing that was bad enough point period.Sony didn’t know like ms knew before they launch that their systems had a high failure rate. For a console that had the first dvd built in, is it that surprising they had some disk read errors.Did PS2 ever leave a big ass ring around your disk? NO!Did the PS2 ever shut off during less of a year worth of gameplay?NO! Is Ps2 the best selling game console and wii ps3 and 360 numbers total will never surpass 150+ million combined ever…maybe yes but one things for sure a 150+ million consoles sold did very well with a read disk error problem. 360 will never match ps2 sells ….and the wii won’t either

#28

Psychotext
23/12/08, 1:03 am

You’re batshit mental. The Wii sales will easily overtake the PS2 sales. It’s sold something like 10m more than the PS2 did in the same timescale… and that’s without a price drop and with it being supply limited since launch in the US.

All that and without having their consoles stop reading discs every five minutes. Impressive really.

“All that and without having their consoles stop reading discs every five minutes. Impressive really.”

The disc read error thing was a fairly isolated incident, and was fixed fairly promptly after launch. I for one have never seen a PS2 that it actually happened to.

The RRoD on the other hand… I have enough sense not to play my 360 so constantly to cause one to happen (power conservation, it works!), but I know someone whose gone through two. And whilst I’ll preach the general quality of 360 games a lot more than I will PS3 games, only a fanboy could ignore how major a problem the RRoD was, and still is.

theevilaires might not be getting his point across in the most eloquent way possible, but he’s actually right this time…

Michael O’Connor you’ve earned some respect points. glad to see someone can take the truth for what it is. if a console with such a high failure rate as the 360 can’t be called a peace of shit for what it is, then there’s no hope for humanity

I have no doubt that the Wii will overtake PS2′s sales, so will the PS3, eventually, and the 360 probably will, too. Bigger market, and all that.

I, too, have never seen a PS2 that has died. I had one since launch day and only got rid of it when I traded it in for a 60gb PS3 (which then died a few months afterwards… oh the bitter fuckirony).

#40

Psychotext

I really don’t think the 360 or the PS3 will come close to what the PS2 sold. In fact I reckon neither will break 70m when all is said and done.

The PS3 will, 10 year lifespan, futureproof, that kinda thing. 360 is hazier, though.

#43

Psychotext
23/12/08, 2:36 am

What are you mumbling about theevilaires?

Gamoc: 10 year lifespan is only really viable when you’re the clear market leader. Customers decide how long your console survives and sells… it’s not just something you can say is going to happen. So obviously, time will tell on that one.

Even if it does, that doesn’t automatically equate to monster sales in the last of those 10 years. You can take the PS2 as an example. In the US it did around 3.5m in its 8th year. That compares to around 7m in its second year.

#44

Gamoc
23/12/08, 2:56 am

…that’s still half of what it did it it’s second year SIX YEARS LATER. That’s damn good if you ask me.

And no, I can’t see the PS3 dying. It’s too good. The system itself, the games are catching, if not already caught up, with more to come. It isn’t going to die before it’s 10 years.

#45

Psychotext
23/12/08, 3:05 am

“That’s damn good if you ask me.”

Oh for sure, but if the PS3 follows a similar sales curve then its sales will be miserable long before it makes it to its eighth year. With the Wii stalking around eating up all the casuals, the 360 costing next to nothing and picking up the hardcore and standalone blu-ray player prices now available for half the price of the PS3 it’s going to be hard for it to fight back.

Who knows, maybe they can pull out a big enough price cut to turn things around with.

#46

Gamoc
23/12/08, 3:11 am

Yeah, I think a price cut is really where it’s at right now. Cut it down to, say, £200 and the world will implode.

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that the PS3 is at the same amount of sales as the PS2 was at thsi point in it’s life.

#47

Psychotext
23/12/08, 3:18 am

That was from the screwed up VGChartz “from launch” chart. At the same number of months after both consoles launched the PS3 is at about 18m sold and the PS2 was at 36m sold.

#48

Michael O'Connor
23/12/08, 6:02 am

“The PS3 will, 10 year lifespan, futureproof, that kinda thing. 360 is hazier, though.”

A 10 year lifespan is only going to happen if 1) sales rise instead of fall, as they recently did, and 2) The competition doesn’t release a competitively priced new format that detracts attention away from it. And lets not pretend that both Nintendo and Microsoft aren’t capable of that.

How exactly is it “futureproof”?

“I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that the PS3 is at the same amount of sales as the PS2 was at thsi point in it’s life.”

Whoever told you that is talking shit. The PS2 managed almost 40 million sales in its first two years, and within three years of its existence, it was selling more units in six months than the PS3 has in two years.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/2664337.stm for just one valid resource to back that up.

Compared to the PS2, NEITHER the 360 or the PS3 are selling that well, and their COMBINED sales are about the same as the PS2 at this point in its life cycle. The PS2 already reached a sales saturation point, so the only thing the PS3 and 360 can do is “share” that section of the public.

The “bigger” market companies are aiming for doesn’t apply to the consoles; it applies to the games. The games are where the big money is at.

But they don’t seem to realise that the general public doesn’t really care; they’ve already got Wii Sports, Brain Training, and Wii Fit; and like it or not, the Wii is the format that is blowing ahead right now.

The 360 and the PS3 are just trying to play catch up.

At least for 2009 the PS3 seems to have a decent lineup of strong games for the core audience. It’s gonna be a hard year for Microsoft in my opinion, despite how well they have done up to now.
