Last Remnant director: 360′s easier to work with than PS3

lastremnanta.jpg

Last Remnant director Hiroshi Takai has told OXM – via CVG – that he’s hoping his next project’s a 360 affair. It’s easier to work on than PS3, apparently.

“It’s been the team’s first time working with Xbox 360 and the Unreal Engine,” he said.

“In both cases the experience has been a positive one. In fact, as we’ve only just finished work on Last Remnant I don’t even know what my next project is going to be at Square Enix.

“However, I’m very much hoping it’ll be for Xbox 360 as it’s been a lot easier to work with than PlayStation 3.”

The Last Remnant’s already released on 360, with a PC version due in 2009′s first quarter.

When the director of a game averaging 6.5 across all reviews throws his fanboy audience a line, only the fannyest of fanboys would cling to it so keenly.

A lot of people I know who own the game and play JRPGs religiously don’t agree with the low scores and think the game is hard done by.

I’d have thought he’d be more keen for his next project to “give him enough time to actual finish the game before releasing it” rather than specifying a favourite platform.

Also, my £17.99 copy from Play.com never showed up. Gotta wait until the 21st before I can complain about it too. (you have to allow 21 days before contacting them, apparently)

    @morriss
I own the game and play JRPGs religiously and don’t agree with the low game scores. However what is undeniable is that the graphics of the game are poor technically.

Regardless I thought this was kind of obvious already. MS do tools very, very well. Sony … not so much :).

I play lot’s of JRPG’s and have done since ever, and I stopped playing the second the main character started acting like a fucking moron in that typical Tidus way that they do. The technical side is a mess and it’s ugly. Not worth the 6.5.

    HA!

Hey, Sport Billy, I suppose you and your company can totally vouch for how EASY it to develop for the PS3 eh??

    LOL!!

    Wow, Haze was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO polished!!

    I thought Haze was ok.

No worse than a handfull of other shooters out there (like Turok and Time Shift etc.)

“Don’t tell my mom!” – was funny.

  13. Shatner

Easy there G1Galoo, you’re heading for another relapse.

The game may have been ‘hard done by’ in terms of people’s levels of appreciation of its gameplay but the technical side can’t really be argued with – even with the best anecdotal evidence to be submitted by impartial onlookers who are attempting to deflect criticism of something. After all, it’s not like some people have a faster GPU than others in their machines is it?

So comments about what machine may be easier to develop for made by one of the people behind its least technically proficient titles is quite amusing. Still, the 360 fanboys will go into apoplectic fits of fanboy joy and wiggle about excitedly in their high-chairs as they go overlooking the irony of such a statement.

Incidentally morriss, my £17.99 edition from Play.com turned up ok. I only ever had one item not show up in my years of ordering from them and they sent out another copy super-quick. I guess that policy has changed.

The game may have been ‘hard done by’ in terms of people’s levels of appreciation of its gameplay

    LOL!

    That’s brilliant!

‘Yeah… the game was brilliant, see. It’s just that no-one could understand the gameplay…’

    HAHA!!

I knew you wouldn’t let me down today! This is BRILLIANT stuff!!

Anyway, the fact is that you can’t even dare to criticise this guy OR his game, since Last Remnant has a metacritic score of 65, and your company’s feeble attempt at an FPS (and all round badly coded, super delayed joke of a title) has a miserable 55.

Dont forget the comments such as: “Despite the good background with the “Timespliters” series, Free Radical fails to deliver a appealing game, and the good moments provided by Nectar fall short to face so many negative points. From the problems in the gameplay and AI to the poor graphics and sound, Haze actually makes us cry for the return to “Timesplitters.”

And lets not forget: “Haze is a distinctly unflattering addition to Playstation 3′s library, embarrassingly reminiscent of the previous generation.” from our lovely magazine Edge either.

Anyway, the man knows which console is easier to develop for, having worked on both.

    Simple as that.

  18. Shatner

Good grief G1Ggleflaps, you do get awfully agitated when someone directs a bit of criticsm to that cold box of circuits you’re so emotionally attached to don’t you?

Again, going on your own admission of the 4 games that make up your extensive familiarity of that non-Microsoft machine you are such an expert on it’s telling that you go to such stupendous measures to denounce anything on it – particularly games you’ve never played (going by your own statements that is).

How this detracts from the valid points I’ve raised I’m not entirely sure.

On the other hand, it certainly contributes to people’s assessment of you being an increasingly unstable fanboy of the highest order.

Incidentally, I’ve never once said what I do for a living or who I work for. So do make sure that the ammo you’re so desperate to fire off in your knee-jerk reaction isn’t loaded with blanks. Others have made precisely the same mistake as you but, following in your beloved Microsoft’s footsteps, you just seem to copy what other people do.

Good job with going off the deep end and ranting like a savage loon. It’s not made anything I’ve said any less true but it’s made you exceptionally bitter and petty – another couple of qualities to add to your impressive portfolio!

  20. G1GAHURTZ

    What was that?

Did the winner of the ‘Shatner Award’ say something?

Sorry Sport Billy, but you alone are the OFFICIALLY most HATED person on this site.

So OFFICIALLY so, that you have your own AWARD! Named after you!! For the most HATED person on the website!!!

People have repeatedly called for you to be BANNED left, right and center, so I think you’ll find that the only one between me and you with an impressive portfolio of attributes that make people hate them is YOU!

And as for this feeble angle that you think that you have on me not playing PS3 games, then I think that you’ll find that of the top 20 rated PS3 games on Metacritic, only FIVE of them are exclusives.

So I CLEARLY don’t need a PS3 in order to play the best games available for the console, do I??

Especially when you consider that most, if not all of them are slightly (a teeny, tiny bit) better in terms of visuals and performance on the 360 anyway!

So I don’t need to play a PS3 to know how good COD4 is on it.

I can find that out without having to waste the £300!

    #20 6 years ago
  21. Shatner

Bizarrely, all your desperate, quite irrelevant and bitter ranting hasn’t made The Last Remnant any less of a technical mess than everyone who has played it seems to think.

Nor has it lessened the hilarious irony of the director of the games statement given the technical quality of his output.

Still, that’s the thing with points. When you have one you don’t have to go spazzing out on desperate and irrelevant tangents to (fail to) detract from them.

Tell you what, why don’t I just rant a lot and use the word “Official” in CAPS. I’m sure that must make a difference. It’s clearly doing wonders for you!

Well, it doesn’t seem like he did to well on the 360 anyway, maybe he should be doing something else than make games.

    From the IGN review.

“The problems begin with technical issues. Simply put, The Last Remnant is a coding disaster.”

“There are such serious framerate issues during combat that what you see on your television sometimes resembles a slideshow.”

“The technical performance of The Last Remnant is so poor that I can’t believe anybody considered the game finished and ready to release.”

“The Last Remnant is a technical mess”

  27. G1GAHURTZ

OK, I’ve got some points for you.

    1. The man’s point was that the 360 is easier to develop for than the PS3. This must also be the findings of the vast majority of developers for both consoles, with all of the games available for both consoles being the proof of that.

Another piece of supporting evidence for this is your company’s pathetic game Haze. If the PS3 was as easy to develop for as the 360, maybe you wouldn’t have been exposed as the sub-standard coder you seem to have proven to be (At least, I assume you’re a coder. You certainly think like a coder).

    2. If the man’s game is technically a pile of rubbish, then it still doesn’t matter, and it doesn’t make his claim any less valid.

He found it easier to develop for the 360, and there is nothing that you can say about that.

You just probably wanted to respond to my comment anyway, didn’t you?

    Didn’t think things through? Hmm…?

Even if his game is a mess, what state would it have been in on the PS3?? Maybe it’s a mess because of it being rushed. Maybe it’s a mess because of other reasons. But it still doesn’t change that FACT that the man found it EASIER to develop the game on the 360.

    3. You ARE OFFICIALLY the most hated person around here. No one else. YOU! Mr winner of the ‘Shatner Award’.

That means people don’t like your stupid comments, your dimwitted thoughts, your ignorant distortions, or your pathetic refusal to disappear…

Like a cockroach, you always come back.

Scurrying around to everyone else’s utter disgust!

  30. Shatner

In all your wildly desperate conjecture and arm waving you haven’t made Last Remnant any less of a technical mess or those statements any less misplaced and ironic.

I look forward to your next post of desperation that utterly fails to renounce those points. Don’t overheat yourself G1Gnut, you’ll probably RRoD.

  31. G1GAHURTZ

I don’t care about the last remnant, Sport Billy!

    Mr OFFICIALLY most hated!

    I don’t even LIKE JRPG’s!

I can’t stand turn based combat for a start. There are nowhere near enough guns… No twitch gameplay… Nah, sorry, they’re not for me. I couldn’t care less if the game, which is still better than that pile of CRAP Haze, was the 2nd worst game in the world!

As for his “Misplaced” statements: “However, I’m very much hoping it’ll be for Xbox 360 as it’s been a lot easier to work with than PlayStation 3.”

Then there’s nothing wrong with that Sport Billy, you big cartoon, is there??

Even if his game was the 2nd worst game ever, after Haze, it still 100% true that he found it easier to work on the PS3 aint it??

    Hmm??

I think you’d find that this was the case if you weren’t practically brain-dead.

The Last Remnant is a very underrated game, but it is technically pretty shoddy in places. The 360 might be easier to code for, but evidently it’s not that easy for Japanese developers to code WELL for.

    First things first.

I think the game scored lower than it deserved, and quite enjoy it. That said, I won’t deny its frame-rate issues are a mess at time, but no-where near as severe as their sometimes made out to be. As for poor graphics? I’d have to disagree, I think the game looks visually amazing.

Secondly, Hiroshi Takai is just stating the obvious. Much like the Dreamcast and the original Xbox, the 360 is basically just a PC in a box, and seeing as games are developed on PCs and Macs, it’s an easier job to port them.

Mind you, that fact can also make developers lazy. If developers focused on the PS3′s capabilities more, you would likely see many more games on the PS3 that outshine (on a purely technical level) the 360 by a large mile.

Son’y consoles have always been tricky development platforms; the PS3 especially so, due to its unique architecture. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though.

I highly doubt that any of you “fanboys” can make a relevant point to this situation. All you have been doing is rambling on about the 360 and PS3. No one cares if you like the 360 better than the PS3, seeing as it isn’t going to change anyone else’s opinion on these consoles I think you all have just wasted your dreadful time devoting yourselves to this website. Stop talking and Just Play already

Hey, let’s not forget that Last Remnant isn’t even using ground-up technology. This guy’s game runs on Epic’s Unreal Tech. So to adopt someone else’s tech and hash it up in such a technically shoddy product and then go about making declarations like he has, well, it just adds to the irony of his statement.

OrphanageExplosion, you don’t seem to be informed correctly. If your basing your efforts on the guesses of people that don’t know anything then you’re on shaky ground. Still, I’m sure you’ll just believe whatever you want to believe irrespective of how far removed from reality it is.

As for G1G’s output today. Like any fanboy, he’s laughably incapable of taking the kind of nonsense that he spews out and persistently attempts to bolster his biased baseless rants by presenting his opinion as fact. Look at his reaction to someone that hasn’t even criticised his beloved box of cold, emotionless silicon. He’s so blinded by the need to defend all and any 360 criticism (irrespective of how valid it may be) that he’s can’t even tell when someone hasn’t even criticised his creamy box with the red light on the front of it. Poor kid.

I’m glad we’ve witnessed his antics today, I can feel confident that we all know which colour bridge he lives under. Nobody but your fellow bridge dwellers could ever take your view remotely seriously ever again. You’ve made me proud. :)

Oh, and once more for good luck:
    G:
In all your wildly desperate conjecture and arm waving you haven’t made Last Remnant any less of a technical mess or those statements any less misplaced and ironic.

Anybody playing a game for the joy of basking in its technical proficiency is missing the point of playing a game.

But to some, playing or even understanding gameplay isn’t as important as arguing irrelevant points on the internet.

And if you like that, Forumwarz does it very well.

“Anybody playing a game for the joy of basking in its technical proficiency is missing the point of playing a game.”

    ^This

Moriss: That’s not to say they’d make better games.

At the end of the day, that’s up to the individual developers, and each format has games worth playing the other doesn’t as long as you keep your tastes broad. The bees under the bonnet are just shiny coating, and a bad game will always be bad however good it looks.

    #46 6 years ago
  47. morriss

I know all that, but your statement is still wrong.

If it was correct, we’d see first party, PS3 exclusives looking better “by a large mile,” but they’re not. Are you now calling Naughty Dog and Guerilla lazy? I don’t think they are, tbh.

Basically, both systems have their bottlenecks. One is neither better nor worse than the other as the technical performance of games like Burnout Paradise are testament to.

    #47 6 years ago
  48. 599USD

People are seriously getting mad about this? LOL this statement just backs up everything other developers have been telling us since these consoles launched. Doensn’t matter if this one game has technical problems, these developers just aren’t any good at coding their games. Infinite Undiscovery has the same technical problems so it’s more of a problem on Square Enix’s end.

“If it was correct, we’d see first party, PS3 exclusives looking better “by a large mile,” but they’re not. Are you now calling Naughty Dog and Guerilla lazy? I don’t think they are, tbh.”

Some do. I’d be more than willing to argue that the 360 couldn’t do Heavenly Sword without red-ringing itself to death. *laughs* And Uncharted is a beautiful game; I honestly don’t think the 360 could visually handle it without some severe visual compromises.

But at the end of the day, it’s arguing apples and oranges. Al that really matters is that the games are good. And as long as they make good games, I could personally care less about which machine is more powerful.

  50. fearmonkey

With all the PS3 development issues due to the complexity of the hardware, it will be interesting to see what Sony does with the PS4. If they do what the rumors say, and release a unit that is moderately more powerful than a PS3, and has the same architexture, then the Programming issuess are still there, though developers would be more used to it by then.

Do you thnk they have to sign something saying that they will release one statement of this sort during the hype train?

Might wanna chill those over-defensive fanboy tendencies, mate. Get some fresh air. I’m just trying to have a friendly discussion, not some fanboy bitch-fest. If you wanna argue that what I’m saying “simply isn’t correct”, at least bother to argue WHY. Simply saying so doesn’t make it so.

No they don’t, and it’s nothing to do with being a fanboy. My god it’s a nursery in here. I say you’re wrong, so it must be a fanboy bitchfest?! What planet are you on?

Just look up 256Mb of VRAM on google and see where it leads you.

It’s just plain fact, mate, nothing to do with preference over a fucking piece of electronics. Both consoles are bottlenecked, both are good at some things, bad at others.

Which is… exactly what I was saying?

The visual clarity of a number of PS3 and the major compression required just to get games like GTAIV on one disc add to that point. The difference isn’t a *huge* gap, but it is there.

But its all moot. At the end of the day, if the game is good enough, the meagre difference means jack.

“It isn’t a *huge* gap? But you said a “large mile.” Which is it? ”

In the case of a game like Heavenly Sword and Uncharted, it is a huge mile. In the case of general multi-format titles, not so much.

And yes I have. It doesn’t change what I’ve seen with my own eyes. Badly programmed PS3 games tend to look visually barren (Resistance being a good example), often-times can’t handle as many visual effects, but there *are* titles on the PS3 that are way ahead of the 360′s capabilities… but hey, they might be an issue of limited disc-space as much as anything else.

    Sport Billy!

You really are totally deluded and appear to be going mad.

You’re going into some psychotic monologue!! LOL!!

I’m glad we’ve witnessed his antics today

Who are you talking to?? Who’s this “we” you seem to be so chummy with??

You are going on like there’s someone ‘with’ you. Someone sharing your mental illness.

    Who’s with you??

    No one, that’s who!

    Nut case!

Next you’ll probably be talking about yourself in the third person!!

You’re so pretentious, you think that people are actually paying attention to your dribble like you were some sort of primary school teacher lecturing his class.

Nobody listens to what you say. Nobody pays attention. Nobody thinks that you know what you’re talking about.

Rather, people think you’re a twat.

Just think about it it Sport Billy. Do you really think that people are going to vote you as the most annoying, irritating person that visits this website and then suddenly LIKE you!?!?

You really do seem to have lost all common sense.

Not even for a few weeks, or a month, but the MOST HATED PERSON on the website in the whole of 2008!!

That’s your problem. I’ve sat and read your pathetic comments where you go on like you know it all, and you’re some industry expert, and I’ve read as you’ve bullied regular gamers with your ‘high and mighty’ tone and your utterly mistaken self righteous stupidity.

Then you thought you could bully me!!

Oops! Didn’t know that I wasn’t just some regular guy who “owns a console“, did you??

Didn’t know that I’ve probably worked in the games industry for longer than you, got more development experience than you, sold more games than you and got higher ratings for the games that I’ve developed than you… did you!?

You’re probably just some jumped up little waste of space junior programmer, a couple of years out of uni, still wet around the ears after scraping a 2:1.

Do yourself a favour Sport Billy, wake up and realise that you’re ALONE, on your OWN, unwanted by a community that voted you the MOST HATED and isolated by your own repulsive character.

    Honestly!

    A MONOLOGUE!! LOL!!

Oh, and sorry to disappoint you, but I really don’t care about MS, or the 360.

The truth is that I couldn’t really care less about brand names or stupid allegiances.

I just want to play the best games, and the FACT is that there are a whole lot more of the best games on the 360 with a much better online network.

If you really paid attention to what I said instead of being so ANAL, you’d notice that I spend way more time talking down the PS3 than I do talking up the 360.

Anyone can slate it off, I don’t care. Anyone can slate MS off, I don’t care.

Anyway, I grew up my whole life playing Nintendo, so in reality if there’s any single manufacturer that I’d even spend more than a few seconds ACTUALLY defending, it’d be them.

    Prat.

    Oh, and:

    1. I’ve already said that Last Remnant probably is a technical mess (I’ve never played it).
    2. We’ve already established that you are totally unable to dispute his statements, so you lose again.

I never suffered any tearing or frame-rate problems while playing it.

Now, Last Remnant on the other hand… ¬_¬ Still a great RPG though.

“So now Insomniac are bad programmers? Ok.”

No, but Resistance still has a barren and empty look gameworld. I’m not sure how saying that one of the developer’s game looks shit = me stating their bad programmers. Oh, that’s right, you’re blowing my statement out of proportion in an attempt to undermine it.

9.02pm: “I’m not sure how saying that one of the developer’s game looks shit = me stating their bad programmers. Oh, that’s right, you’re blowing my statement out of proportion in an attempt to undermine it.

Does anyone know what happened to Mr O’Connor in the 30 missing minutes…?

  68. deftangel

Christ what’s going on in here. There are two statements which appear to me the general concensus from what I’ve read amongst people who should know what they’re talking about. Mind you, this debate is very 2006.

    i) The PS3 & 360 are roughly equal in power *all things considered* 360 has more usable more memory, better GPU. PS3 has HDD as standard, very powerful processor once mastered.

ii) The 360 tools & API is excellent. It has an architecture more similar to that of a PC. This is makes it easier to get to grips with than the Cell architecture which was quite a radical departure at the time. Memory is still a challenge on the PS3. Sony had to play catch up in terms of support & docs though they’ve put a lot of effort into that in recent times.

Supporting evidence would be the raft of early cross platform games, Epic’s struggles with UE3 on the PS3 and Burnout Paradise, which led development on Sony’s platform largely because it was easier to go from PS3 -> 360 than the other way round.

Being easier to develop for does not automatically make one machine more powerful than the other!

    #68 6 years ago
  69. Psychotext

Consider yourself lucky then Michael, because you’d be one of the few that didn’t. I must admit that I only played the demo, but that had plenty of it. Reviews mentioned the problems with the final game, as did forums in the weeks after release.

Ask yourselves one question, SCEA, Naughty Dog and a few other key PS3 centric developers have world class programmers. So… If they had the power, tools and the knowledge to distance the PS3 from the 360 in terms of graphics, wouldn’t they have done it already? Yes they would have.

The truth is they have come to grips with the PS3 SDK and cannot do it, not because it’s that harder to code for, but because it’s not possible. They are both of similar capacity, but differ in one common area, storage. 360 is limited by dvd-9 media capacity where as PS3 has the storage media but lacks the capacity (RAM)to fully display all that BD-Rom content.

G1GAHURTZ, if you ‘ve worked in the games industry for a long time, got much development experience , sold many games and got high ratings for the games that you’ve developed then you sure as fuck wouldn’t type all of that.. and you sure wouldn’t comment every single article on this site with some anti-PS3 stuff.. Who said I’m not biased!?

I don’t like the PS3, it’s as simple as that!

You don’t have to like a thing to work on it!!

I work to get paid. I’m blessed enough to be able to have a job where I can sit at a computer and make games for a living.

That doesn’t mean that I have to have some sort of special impartiality or remove all of my honest opinions.

How am I a fanboy anyway?? It’s easy to throw this tag around, but it’s just people’s misconceptions.

Just because I don’t like Sony and own a 360, you think that that that automatically makes me a 360 fanboy.

Sorry, but no. I just dont like Sony.

I didn’t like them when they tried to compete with the SNES, I didn’t like them when they tried to compete with the N64, I didn’t like them when they helped to kill of the Gamecube, I didn’t like them when they got me all hyped about the PS3 and then totally messed it up, and I don’t like them now.

I don’t care about what happens to MS, or the 360 as long as I can play the best games.

That’s just my personnal opinion, and doesn’t have any impact whatsoever on my ability to do my job as a professional.

I make games for a living, I’m very priveliged, and very thankful for the blessings that I have, and as a professional it’s my job to make the best games that I can and the platform has so far, never been my choice.

But that doesn’t mean that I can’t have an opinion about what’s going on in the world of gaming.

G1GAHURTZ, but if you yourself know that you’re biased, and you aren’t a 360 fanboy, then what’s the whole point of posting your opinions like this? to tell the whole world how much you hate the fucked company that is Sony? because clearly there’s no sense in debating with you for someone who has a different point of view.

funny you’re saying all of that about Sony, btw, because I feel the exact same about MS. I despise that company, since the very beginning.

and I do work as a coder in gaming industry, yet I don’t wait for every MS-related article to post my thoughts on MS and their platforms in comments every single time. because there’s no point in that. if you really want to tell everyone how shitty is PS3, then go ahead and say that like Gabe Newell, tell everyone that PS3 is a disaster. but there’s no sense in this bullshit, and going mad about all this like that.

Oh right. Well Cort, if you’d like me to start talking about having sex with your mum, as well as having a go a Sony, just let me know fella!

You know what I find ironic?

The fact that the weak mindedness that Sport Billy tried to pin on me, where I was supposed to have some sort of twisted love for a console and couldn’t handle any criticism of it, actually applies to you!

    Now that’s ironic.
