I think they'll be ticking over until they can do a PSthree style relaunch. The question is how much cash they've got to spare to get the R&D done. Sadly it doesn't seem like a lot but I think it's the only thing that will get them going in Japan.

In the US it seems a lot of people view the back compat as a big deal, plenty of ancedotal evidence to say BC models are in much higher demand despite the higher price.

It's a shame for them, but they've nobody to blame but themselves. The perceived price gap between the 360 and the PS3 in the US is absolutely huge - $199 for the cheapest 360, $400 for the cheapest PS3.

Sure, that's not like for like - the 360's an arcade unit. But the average consumer's not going to see that immediately, they're just going to think that the PS3 costs twice as much. How long are Sony going to be content 'ticking over'? Where's their 'fight' gone?

God knows what they're going to say at the start of next year because until the Killzone 2 price cut kicks in, with the economy the way it is I can't see how they'll manage a YoY increase over 2008 in Jan & Feb.

Which is basically all they can point to at this point and even then in a roundabout way. If November is any indication sales might even contract :S

Going to be a scary place to be SCEA for the first couple of months of 2009.

They did have a price cut last November though. I don't have the figures but it might be interesting to look at total October+November sales for 2007 vs 2008.

How about the fact that hardware sales are lower this November than last November? That's gotta hurt.

Looks all good if you ask me. despite more growth for the 360 I think Sony will be happy with this.. and can build from here. Once the manufacturing costs come down a bit so they can lower the price a floodgate of adopters will be there next xmas to eat it up. Looks like 08 wasn't too bad afterall.

Those software gains are certainly adding some good dough to the mix!
