GTA IV PC is… broken
Kotaku’s reporting that the PC version of GTA IV is seeing mass complaints thanks to problems ranging from “dire performance issues to numerous error codes to a lack of SLI support”.
Steam is even offering refunds, apparently.
Rockstar’s published a guide to making sense of various error messages.
More detail, including links to shouty forums, through the link.

nobody actually thought this was going to be easy did they?
its the first GTA that actually looked good.
Rockstar are quick patchers though, not quite valve but they’re good.

GTAIV on the PC is indeed borked!
* It doesn’t see my crossfire setup.
* Refuses to let me change resolution or draw distance settings.
* Shadows flicker and move constantly.
* It has no options for AF, AA or Vsync.
* The collision detection seems much worse that the PS3 version.
* Performance wise it seems to jerk and spike for no apparent reason!
Who tested this thing? My guess is nobody at all!
Who thought it was a good idea to require Windows Live and Rockstar Social Club running to play online?
Who thought it was a good idea to require Rockstar Social Club running to be able to save your game!?!
Really amateurish stuff and not what I’d expect from Rockstar. I’m off on holidays for a week from tonight so hopefully when I come back it’ll be patched.

It needs a very good system to run first of all, second microsoft want you to only use xbox controllers thats why no other controller works or none I have tried anyway, in the manual it says “supports xbox 360 controller for windows”, (it should say “ONLY supports…”). The reason it wont let you change the resolution or draw distance is because it has a video memory usage limit and wont let you exceed it. If you bring the texture detail down it should let you, you need at least 512mb video to play it and have it run good.
I had a problem starting the game when i sign into rockstar game social club, it crashed and gave me an error code which when I looked it up it said rockstar are having problems letting people log in so I just started it without logging in to RGSC and it worked.
Hope the patches fix the joypad issues and the drain the game has on your system. You can save your game without Rockstar social club, I cant even log into RSC and play but you can save the game when your logged into windows for games, thats bull too doh.

Is GTA 4 on PC badged up as a “Games For Windows” or “Games For Windows Live” if so that may be why the 360 controller is so prominent (I’d bet a few shekels that the ingame iconography reflects the 360 controller too). However, any PC game *should* detect a Direct X compatible controller these days.
In my previous experience of RockStar games on PCs I’ve usually found their ports pretty dire – particularly when it comes to getting control mappings sorted. GTA:SA was a blast on my PC once I could play it with the same console button layout as the PS2 but it was a nightmare achieving that. In the end it was a GTA fan site program for remapping controls that did the job and nothing from RockStar themselves.
As for the Social Club thing, that’s just the publisher wanting to have you signed into their online service/hub. If the game relays playing stats back for viewing via the Social Club it’s going to need some sort of connectivity, right? Just like playing games on Steam does. I don’t think it’s really as amateurish as some might imply.

I dont think the logging in is the problem most people are having, the main problem is that people systems cant play it, even systems that should. The logging in problems will eventually be fixed, used to dealing with Steam so dont have a problem with that as long as they get it to work. The controller setup screen has a pic of xbox360 controller with different configurations for it, I have several different joypads one is PS2 to usb and it worked fine with both GTAVC and GTASA and all other games ive wanted to use it with, I ‘d say its to do with microsoft and the Games For Windows Live crap.
