Microsoft claims Xbox 360 outsold PS3 three-to-one on Black Friday
According to a press release sent out by Microsoft, Xbox 360 made Black Friday history: apparently, it managed to outsell Sony’s disc-eating box three-to-one over the post-Thanksgiving sale weekend.
Said Xbox boss Don Mattrick:
“Record Black Friday sales in the U.S., coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009.”
In addition, the press release claims that Xbox 360 sales in Europe have surged “as much as 400 percent.”

Xbox 360 Registers Biggest Black Friday in Its History
Xbox 360 consoles and games sell at record levels; outsells PlayStation 3 by three-to-one ratio.
REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-K/ — Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system kicked off the holidays with record- breaking console sales on one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year in the U.S. Retailers reported Xbox 360 console sales over the Black Friday weekend were on pace to beat previous years, outselling the PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one ratio and estimating a 25 percent increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales figures from 2007.
Strong game sales rounded out a historic Black Friday for Xbox 360, with record-paced software sales continuing for key Microsoft titles, such as “Gears of War 2,” “Fable II,” and “Lips.” Xbox 360 continues to have the highest game attach rate of any console at 8.1 games per console.
“We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market,” said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “Record Black Friday sales in the U.S., coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009.”
Xbox 360 sales have also surged worldwide since the September price drop, outselling the PlayStation 3 week over week across Europe. Console sales in Europe are up as much as 400 percent, with sales nearly double year over year and reaching 7 million consoles sold this generation.
With a mass-market price point starting at $199.99 worldwide (estimated retail price) for Xbox 360 Arcade, a games lineup of more broad-appeal social titles than any other platform, and the recently launched New Xbox Experience, Xbox 360 is leading the industry and inviting everyone to play.

We need a video of people fighting for PS3s so we can decide for ourselves.

Next, Sony will issue a press release saying how ‘year on year’ their sales are up and telling us how the ‘Playstation brand’ has performed.
Then Nintendo will release a statement showing how they pounded the rest of them into the ground. Five times over.

Blerk: Sony might have difficulty with that one this month. Their November sales last year came on the back of a price cut so improving by any significant amount will be a pretty good achievement.
I’m sure they can switch to a wider period for the comparison if they need to though.

When are we gettign NPD’s?
Should be interesting. Not for Sony.
But I hope it convinvec them to dro the price point, there’s a lot of people waiting for it to come down, becuase there’s stuff people want to play.

Will it make the US top ten? Hard to say. There’s been a lot of big multiplatform games this month, and there’ll be a ton of old Wii games up the top of the chart too.

I’m in a quandry, I bought my mate a PS3 so we could go online since I never play with real life friends since trading my xbox in for A PS3 with no regrets. Cut a long story short, he hates how “not intergrated” PSN is compared to XBL and he wants me to get a XB360 but I was looking at the bundles today and I dont see the point, I want Fable 2 and maybe GOW2 but aside from that, bugger all and I will be buying all my games on PS3 anyways, as I just kinda prefer it to the 360 in everyway, even PSN is less annoying. More mic’s would be a benefit though.

@SilentLoner: You’d be surprised how many games will suddenly become appealing to you when you have the machine. It’s natural that you’d ignore all but biggest titles for a machine that you don’t own. I had exactly the same thing happen when I bought an xbox last gen.
Probably even more so this gen with XBLA stuff flying under the radar.

Fable 2 is Sims with swords. Such a pitiful little game. The casual games have managed to destroy what’s good in the world.

wouldn’t call Fable a casual game, but that emo Molineux himself said “please please play it with someone who doesn’t know a shit about gaming”.

Good performance by MS but they need to be careful about next year. I really can’t say many 360 games I want next year. New Halo game, cool, Alan Wake (if we ever see it?) cool but the PS3 I want Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, God of War, inFamous, GT5, MAG and Heavy Rain.
I do hope MS announce some games soon.

Why would anybody doubt this or be shocked by this?
Also, I really, really enjoyed Fable 2. It is just a great atmosphere and fun to play. Right now I’m stuck in post-apocaliptic Washington DC in Fallout 3 on my second character (this time a sneak-thief). It’s awesome.

“Why would anybody doubt this or be shocked by this?”
Start at the beginning:
“According to a press release sent out by Microsoft..”
Every number they mention in relation to the weekend is a ratio or percentage. Not a concrete, contextual number. Any of those numbers they DO happen to mention are all about “along with installed user base” etc etc. No actual specific performance numbers related to the period they happen to be blowing their trumpet about. Odds are this press release was written comfortably in advance of Black Friday.
And, as usual, they neglect to mention the Wii amongst their selectively comparitive ratios and percentages.
But, hey, it’s a company Press Release! And we all know that nobody ever questions the validity of those, right? Cause all companies are treated equally right?
Right!

Microsoft doesnt feel as much competition from Nintendo as they do from Sony. There’s a world of difference between the PS3 and the Wii as competitors.
Havent MS already said a while ago that they believe in the Wii60 train of thought?. the games people buy for the HD console in a world apart from what people buy on the Wii. That’s probably why they don’t feel the need to mention it (according to me)

Glad you think so morriss. Next time you have any trouble interpreting company press releases just holler and I’ll be happy to educate you.
Or, alternatively, you could just make a worthless dismissive comment each and every time I make a comment. Not that you’re transparently predictable these days.
Oh, and tell pat to hurry up with that email. Thanks.

As soon as you say something worthwhile, I’ll respond in kind.
Also, tell him yourself, you know his email address.
However, you could reply to the two mails I’ve sent you, you suggested we continued the conversation in private, I did, and you’ve gone dark.
Shame you say so much but deliver so little. But that’s what you’re known for, so I hear.

Odd. You said “Deep”. Either implying that what I said was deep or (surely not!) making yet another dismissive troll like response to any post I make. Either way your latest response either paints you as a hypocrite or a troll. Your choice.
Perhaps if you weren’t so quick to leap and say something stupid you wouldn’t need to flip flop between trying to sound reasonable and making bold, empty, evasive statements all the time?
It’s not like this is the first time you’ve painted your little troll-self into a little troll-corner. One would have hoped you’d learn to manage your own transparently immature conduct a little better by now. Maybe you’re just a slow learner.
And I’ve not had any emails from you morriss. Sorry.
Are you certain you have the right information?
