Ghostbusters to launch in June 2009

ghostbusters3.jpg

Atari’s confirmed that Ghostbusters will be published next June.

The news comes from a publisher event in London today.

The Terminal Reality title’s an all-format affair, and was feared lost in the galaxy collision that was Activision and Blizzard.

Never fear, though. Phil came, he saw, he kicked its ass.

Thanks, Techradar.

Even though it’s YAAG (Yet Another Action Game), I have to admit to a modicum of excitement in this particular case.

Ghostbusters was a breeding ground for abstract imagery, and one doesn’t even have to look at the most obvious — the gigantic man of marshmallowy goodness — to see that. I find that movies of that particular era, even movies that portrayed themselves as having the most common subject material, were bravely strange.

I think Ghostbusters pioneered the absurd idea of having an interdimensional doorway in one’s fridge, a wholly bizarre concept that spawned many of the similar ideas that followed it. It was something that was even paid homage to by Sam & Max. Oh, and they used “mood slime” and feel-good music to animate the Statue of Liberty … and a toaster. Let’s not forget that.

So while the vehicle for the delivery of such abstract imagery might be an action game, I can still find enjoyment in such a game based upon how odd it all is. I look forward to seeing just how often the plot-writers of this game can surprise me, and given the source material, they have no excuse not to.

Hurrah! This and Bionic Commando are next year’s big must-have action/adventure games for me so far! Please don’t disappoint!

(Dark Void and Damnation look pretty interesting, too)
