Pachter’s Assassin’s Creed 2 comments just “rumour”, says Ubi
Ubisoft has moved swiftly to quell comments made by Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Pachter, that said Assassin’s Creed 2 will be set in 1700s.
“This is only a rumor and we would prefer not to comment on rumors,” said the rep.
The game has now been confirmed by Ubisoft, but details and a date have yet to be aired.

I’ve still got to play the original.

If the rumor is accurate, does that mean that Altair will exchange his costume to a brown colour, take to skulking around in the dark a lot, and launching self-seeding arrows ahead, to mask his travel along noisy walkways?

I haven’t played the original either. It doesn’t seem to have dropped in price too much in DK, still around £35 for a pre-owned, so I can’t be bothered to pay that much for it.

You two should probably just rent it. Then see how you feel about it, thereafter. My copy sits, unfinished on my shelf, because it became tediously repetitive. It’s one I make a note to get back to, mostly for some closure on the matter, but so far I haven’t managed to, despite the enthusiasm I originally felt towards the game.

I’ve never rented a game in my life.
True story.

It’s only about a tenner brand new over here now, so I may as well just buy a copy.

£14 for the 360 version from Zavvi, PS3 version’s a tenner from Play.
It’s out on budget on both platforms, so it shouldn’t be more than about £18 anywhere.

I quite liked Assassin’s Creed, but for me it was more of an audio/visual experience, I could spend hours running around the rooftops… but that’s probably not enough to warrant paying the full price for it, no.
If you can find it in a bargain bin though, I can guarantee that you’ll have a good time with it and feel that it was money well spent. Just don’t try to over-analyse the story too much… I did that and it almost drove me batty. I did that with Dead Space too, after I found out how to translate the bloody marker nonsense, and that almost kicked me off the edge too.
Friendly warning, anyway.

Me too! And probably never will.
I bought and played AC last Christmas and liked the game a lot. (XB360 version)
Game mechanics were quite repetitive but the setting and story was marvelous.
I generally like games where the skill of handling your controller is not the most interesting part of all.

Whatever time period it’s set in, I’m glad that some companies are starting to realize that “real” history is much more interesting than almost any kooky fantasy world game developers keep coming up with.
I’d not be surprised if it helped with AC’s high sales too. There’s probably a much higher interest in history with the general public than they’re given credit for.

You actually played AC Vincent? Its take on history is rather slack, it merely uses it as an era to which the game is set, like many others, theres nothing new or interesting about it.

Yes, I played it… I realize of course that it’s “popular history”, history as entertainment, but it’s actually not bad at all considering (ignoring the sci-fi and fantasy nonsense of course). There’s loads of little touches that most “historical movies” don’t even bother with, such as Richard the Lionheart speaking with a French accent rather than an English one.
But maybe we just disagree on the “merely” in “merely using it as an era”. I felt it was really refreshing.

AC is easily amongst my fave games this gen. (I know I know, not to everybody’s taste, but people that don’t like it are simply mentally deficient in some way, as borne out by a recent study from De Montfort University.)
For me, the idea of an AC set in the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution would be so far beyond cool, a new word would probably have to be invented. The Cult of Reason would fit *perfectly* into AC’s existing story when you factor in Abstergo’s pan-historic role.
Then again, it might just as easily be set in feudal Japan, as the ending sequence makes reference to the Yonaguni Monument. But I’m hoping for the former.
